“Perfect Little Museum”

Museum of the Everglades

Owner description: Escape Naples' dazzling pace of development for a day and spend a lazy afternoon exploring the history of nearby Everglades City. Once accessible only by boat, this remote frontier trading town took an ambitious new turn in 1923 as the hub of Barron Collier's personal Southwest Florida real estate empire - with a population of fewer than twelve families. First opened in 1927 as a commercial laundry, today's Museum of the Everglades dates back to a time when construction of the famous Tamiami Trail was well underway and the tiny settlement of Everglades served as the first County seat. The museum's permanent and rotating exhibits provide visitors with an in-depth look at over 2,000 years of human history in the area and tell the story of those adventurous enough - and stubborn enough - to settle Southwest Florida's lush "River of Grass." Faithfully restored to its original, 1920s Collier-era appearance, the museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located 35 miles east of downtown Naples.

“Perfect Little Museum”

I usually get overwhelmed at museums, but this one is just the right size, with just the right amount of information. There were 4 short films that were also very interesting. The $2 suggested donation is a bargain! The woman who greeted us was extremely nice.

“A trip back in time”

There won't be any crowds, and you won't pass many cars on the road either. This is a small but quaint museum in a forgotten city, very off the beaten path. The employee was most knowledgeable and directed us to other cool locations to visit.

“So glad we visited!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2013

After a long drive from Miami into Everglades City we came upon the most charming museum I had ever visited. Even though the museum was not scheduled to be open for another 15 minutes, the young lady who greeted us said "come on in". She was very informative and knowledgeable about the town, the museum and Florida. We watched all of the information videos and saw the exhibits. Such a pleasant young woman. I will return to this lovely building and hope to see that friendly smile again. Thanks

“Great Stop For a History Lesson”

For a small donation- $2 recommended- you get a large dose of Everglades history. Artwork from the local school is a bonus as you enter. Artifacts and documents along with videos of the early days and how Everglades City was built. Clean restroom. Air conditioning. What's not to love??

“Very Imformative”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2013

Very small town, clean, and friendly staff. We stopped in during their 4th of July celebration and the staff was very friendly. The information, decor and exhibits were very informative and the art display of the students art was spectacular.
