Owner description: Escape Naples' dazzling pace of development for a day and spend a lazy afternoon exploring the history of nearby Everglades City. Once accessible only by boat, this remote frontier trading town took an ambitious new turn in 1923 as the hub of Barron Collier's personal Southwest Florida real estate empire - with a population of fewer than twelve families. First opened in 1927 as a commercial laundry, today's Museum of the Everglades dates back to a time when construction of the famous Tamiami Trail was well underway and the tiny settlement of Everglades served as the first County seat. The museum's permanent and rotating exhibits provide visitors with an in-depth look at over 2,000 years of human history in the area and tell the story of those adventurous enough - and stubborn enough - to settle Southwest Florida's lush "River of Grass." Faithfully restored to its original, 1920s Collier-era appearance, the museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located 35 miles east of downtown Naples.

Stopped in to see what this was about. I expected a typical tourist trap kind of thing. Surprisingly it is a very nicely presented history of the development everglades, the opening of the road from Miami to the west coast, and Everglade City. Mostly a static display with maps, photos and essays. It will take about 30 to 45 minutes to read through all the information but worth the stop.

Nice little Museum, friendly staff. Something to while away an hour or so. Signs and direction could be clearer - just a small point.

This is a quaint local history museum that provides a really good overview to the heyday of Everglades City and making of the Tamiami Trail. We really enjoyed it!

We enjoyed this while in the "Glades". My wife usually does not like these, but we learned a lot in a short amount of time.

It's worth the stop in.

Walking through and looking at/reading all the displays cannot be done in 30 minutes! Very informative. The videos are worth sitting and watching. The old laundry machines are interesting.
