Thoroughly enjoyed the adult twilight cruise last weekend. If you want to cruise the river without the touristy narration this is the cruise to go on. The boat leaves the dock just before sunset. Be sure to get there around 30 minutes early in order to ensure a good seat up front. You can bring your own drinks and snacks on with you. We brought a cooler on board with beer and wine and got a seat up front. The fun began as soon as we left the dock. Captain "Pajama" Dave was hilarious and a wealth of information about the history of the area. There's also live music on board. On this particular night we had the pleasure of seeing Jim Barcaro perform. During our cruise we were chased by dolphins, saw wild horses running along the beach on Cumberland Island and took in the most breathtaking sunset. The cruise was relaxing, entertaining and a great way to hear about the local lore of the island. Can't wait to return and take another trip with these guys.

My husband and I went on the afternoon beech creek river tour. Kenneth and Kurt were great! They explained the history of the island in such great detail and had eyes out for all the different animals, in fact found an alligator everyone missed and they turned the boat around so everyone could see it (don't worry it wasn't close) in addition to the alligator we saw manatees, dolphins (one of which came halfway out if the water right next to the boat) wild horses, very large wild turkey, blue heron, osprey, pelicans. Kenneth and Kurt were very informative and happily answered all questions. Make sure to take a jacket if you go early spring as it got very cold the further on the water we got. They provide blankets if you need some as well on complementary sunscreen. If you have time and like boats I highly recommend one of the river cruises you won't be disappointed.

The AI River Cruise was a great day. We got a tour of the harbor, saw some wild horses on Cumberland Island and heard the history of the island. It was a fun day out on the water

We went on an afternoon cruise with Captain Kurt and Kenneth. Both were so very nice and knowledgable about island history. We got to see many wild horses and heard all about the Carnegie Family. Thoroughly enjoyable and well worth the cost on a lovely day. The blankets that were provided were a very welcome touch.

We took the 2-ish hour morning cruise. It was also about 30 minutes longer than advertised. We had a beautiful day with minimal wind and lots of sunshine. The boat is like a long flat barge with most of the seats covered by a fabric roof. There are a few seats up front in full sun. They have sunscreen available on-board for free. And they have $1 bottles of cold water. There is also a toilet on board.
If you want to see the best views of the shore, make sure to get a seat on the right side of the boat (the side away from the dock). The boat takes the same route back, but it is much farther from shore when it returns so you can't see much.
I was hoping to get photos of the Cumberland Island horses and while we did see them, they were so far away that my 70-200mm lens on a crop sensor Canon Rebel could not get very good shots of them. From the boat with the naked eye they were tiny in the distance. You could just make out that they were horses. If you want to photograph the horses, rent a smaller boat and make sure you know the rules about stopping at Cumberland Island so the rangers don't fine you or your boat doesn't get beached by the tide. Or take the ferry over there for the day.
The captain is also the tour guide and he spends the whole time on the way out talking about the history of Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach, the shrimping industry, and a long time on Cumberland Island, the Carnegies, the Rockerfellers, and the other rich people who've been to the island. He also points out the house that was used to film Pippy Longstocking, Fort Clinch, and the Kings Bay Nuclear Sub Naval Station. On our cruise we saw very few birds or other wildlife. The boat is too big to make it closer to shore and stays in the large river. If you want to see more, the afternoon cruise that uses a smaller boat might be better, or they have jet skis for rent.
Anyway, it was a pleasant two and a half hours on the river and the Captain was very good about answering questions.
