Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort
Ranked #7 of 12 Hotels in Fernandina Beach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 August 2014

The resort plantation is huge! So, a few things to be aware of:
1) If you're staying in a villa, you could be a long walk from the main pools/lobby/restaurants. This probably isn't an issue for you if you're choosing a villa, but definitely something to be aware of if you're planning on eating your meals at the on-property restaurants. Also, beach/pool towels are picked-up/dropped-off at the hotel pool, so... bring your own if you're at a villa to avoid the walk. :)

2) The hotel is very large, with tons of rooms that I *think* all face the ocean. Ours was a very nice room - the bed & bedding felt new (firm & comfy), and towels were plush (as opposed to thin / bare). Lots of outlets around the sink for those who need to plug in everything from a toothbrush to hairdryer to curler to whatever. In general the resort has undergone a huge renovation since the last year, so it's a good time to enjoy "newness" of an older property.

3) The room ac's work REALLY well, so well you can get quite chilly if you leave it on with the fan set to high all night. (We figured that out real early the first morning, ha.)

4) There's more than just pools & the beach here - there are small lakes for fishing, hiking trails, on-site golf course, putt-putt, nature center, bike rentals, and playgrounds for kids. The grounds in general are beautiful. Yes, some other people lament about having to open your wallet, but understand you're not at an all-inclusive. You don't HAVE to do any of those things (hey, come on, the beach & pools & trails & playgrounds are all free!), but other stuff to do is there if you want. Make sure to check out the website for activities to find what's happening on the days you're around. For us, we love the beach, but sometimes need to give our kids a "break" from the sun & sand to do other activities.

5) The breakfast buffet is pricey, but if you can swing it, it's fantastic. Fresh gourmet breads, local honeys, omelet station, etc. Pretty much anything you can ask for. Plus, kids 5 and other eat free at the buffet. Watch out for the weekends - you may want to go early because it can get crowded. My only complaint is the outside seating doesn't have enough shade - it's beautiful because you can see the sunrise, but that sun can get hot fast out there!

We truly enjoyed our stay here (family of 4 with 2 kids under 5), and will definitely stay again if we're ever down Amelia Island way.

Oh, for those of you coming from the South, or interested in a slight detour, there is the St John Ferry just 10 miles south of the resort. Our kids got a kick out of riding it. Just a thought if you're driving in and want something different (it's about $6 or so for your car to cross on the ferry, and it runs every half-hour).

Room Tip: If you're a light/early-to-bed sleeper, 2 suggestions for you: 1) request a room that is *not...

The Omni Amelia Island Resort and Plantation is a beautiful property, right on the beach. The staff is professional, friendly and helpful. My trip was business, however, I would choose to return for pleasure. This was my second trip to Amelia Island; the last time I stayed at the Ritz. The Omni Amelia Island Resort & Plantation experience far out pased the Ritz experience.

I booked and paid for 2 rooms for 3 nights, one for me and one for my sister. I called the morning we were to arrive to reconfirm the room type and to request rooms close together, at which time I was told everything was confirmed. My sister arrived first (around 3:30PM) and was told the hotel was oversold and that they would not get their guaranteed oceanview king room. They were put on the pool deck in a queen room with no view of the ocean. They were told they could move the next day, but would have to check out then wait until check in time to move to the new room, and would have to have the bell staff hold their luggage in the interim. My brother in law had knee surgery less than 2 weeks prior, and it was going to be very difficult for them to move, especially since the luggage would have to be stored then collected and moved at the end of the day, not to mention not having a room from 11AM until 3PM. They asked if they could be given some sort of credit since they did not get the room type guaranteed, and were offered a $50 credit for each room, hers and mine. My sister asked if we could also get breakfast vouchers, and the desk clerk, who was very rude and not apologetic at all, said no, that the $50 was all she would offer. The desk manager was standing next to her, and also did not apologize or offer any alternate solutions. Later that day, my sister went to the desk to say that they would just stay in the queen room because of her husband's knee, and asked again if they could at least have breakfast vouchers for the inconvenience of no king bed AND no ocean view their entire stay. They were finally given 2 vouchers (VERY reluctantly), but the same desk clerk made it clear that they would only get 2 vouchers a day, and that she would NOT provide vouchers for the other room that was supposed to be next to hers. I own a vacation rental business, and would have been very upset if someone from my staff had handled the situation the way the desk clerk and her manager did, especially the fact that she copped a very bad attitude. Compared to our experience last year with the desk being gracious and well trained, this year made a terrible first impression of what could have been an otherwise great stay. I was extremely embarrassed since I had gifted the trip to my sister and her husband for their 25th anniversary, and felt that the hotel did very little to make up for not meeting both the room type and view paid for and guaranteed. Additionally, the food quality also did not compare to last year, especially the lunch at the pool. We looked forward to the fish tacos, which had been amazing the year before, only to be served under cooked and EXTREMELY over salted fish this year (and we like salt!), which we had to send back. Additionally, we ordered a bloody mary that was sugary sweet and unlike any we have ever had. The server was really nice, and even went and checked the bloody mary mix, reporting back that the mix contained sugar. It probably would not have been so noticeable if the drink had contained more alcohol, so it was sweet and weak, not a good combination for $12 plus tax and tip. I will say that with the exception of the day desk staff, the service was amazing, and it is unfortunate that the initial desk contact could be negative enough for us to consider not returning to the resort, and prompt me to write this lengthy feedback on our stay.

A friend and I decided to "get away from work, husbands, kids, cooking and cleaning"- for just one night. We scheduled at the Spa for a few hours of treatments, floated over for lunch at Marche Burette Deli and then checked into the hotel. From start to finish the staff were wonderful. It was a luxurious and restorative 24 hours.

Loved our stay at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. It is truly a first class resort. They cater to your every whim. We don't usually stay at resorts but my wife and I enjoyed our stay here. Our King deluxe room was spotless. All the rooms face the ocean with a balcony. I would recommend staying here for anyone. It would be great for a honeymoon location or for a family with small children to stay. Great place with attentive staff. Only negative is the parking. It is far from the room and inconvenient for any of the rooms. Of course they offer valet parking for a price. Otherwise a great place to stay.

Room Tip: All the rooms are equally good.

Omni Amelia Island Plantation is a first class resort facility. They pay attention to every detail and treat one like a king. I would recommend it to anyone without reservations especially as a honeymoon location or even for a family with small children.

My husband and I will definitely visit Omni at Amelia Island again. We have stayed in some nice hotels before but this has been the #1 stay and he really enjoyed the golf course. The staff, the environment was amazing!
