“A Pleasant Stay after a Rocky Start”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

There are higher expectations when you stay at a Ritz Carlton Hotel than a Courtyard by Marriott. Unfortunately, early on in our visit these expectations were not met. However, to the hotel's staff's credit, they never stopped trying to recover and please. If Ritz/Marriott now has mobile check-in. why can't they text their guests, if the room assigned is NOT going to be ready early as requested in the reservation process? Why ask for flight number and arrival time, if you are not going to pay any attention to this information? We waited for almost 3 hours to be able to check into our room. If we had known that the room wasn't going to be ready until almost normal check-in time, 4 pm, we would have sight-seed in Jacksonville after landing.
Is it normal to do room upgrades/maintenance in a room where guests are staying unless they request it? 5:30pm on Sunday afternoon, after we had been checked-in for only about 2 hours, the hotel maintenance staff decided to upgrade the televisions in the suite. That took another hour in which we sat around and could not use the room.
After those two incidents our stay at the hotel was quite nice. The staff in all areas is very friendly, helpful, and well-trained. From the car parkers to the pool attendants and breakfast servers everyone is smiling and anxious to make your stay better.
If you have the time and inclination, dining at Salt, the hotel restaurant, is a wonderful top quality meal. We enjoyed the food and the service.
All in all we felt that we had a good experience at the Ritz Carlton, which easily with some management focus could have been even better.

Room Tip: It is a Ritz Carlton, you get what you pay for.

Green Features: Nothing overt was mentioned about the environment, but it is a great area to run on the beach, or walk among the trees.

Okay, it's a Ritz so there are some things you can almost always count on - attentive staff, luxurious décor, comfortable rooms, somewhat inflated prices, etc. and this Ritz is no exception. Unfortunately it wasn't flawless and at the Ritz I expect flawless. There were a couple of problems that just weren't handled well.

The maid service skipped over our room one day and then when we called we were told that it was because the Do Not Disturb sign was out all day (It was out til 11:00 am) and then we had to wait 40 minutes for the clean towels we requested in lieu of actual maid service. I know these things happen but the response was disappointing.

Also, I've seen another reviewer mention that it's a good idea to double-check your bill. They were right. We were charged the wrong rate but discovered it early on the video system in the room. That was the only good thing about that video folio review. Other than that it's inaccurate and cumbersome.

Griping aside, it really is a beautiful property and incredibly luxurious. Exactly what I would expect from a Ritz on the beach.

Commendations to the staff, service is top-notch and friendly. We were offered to upgrade to a suite and I am so happy we did. Two rooms and a large dressing hallway and 3 bathrooms! This resort is gorgeous and there are so many fun activities for the kids such as searching for shark teeth and a talking macaw. We loved relaxing in hammocks and looking at the stars on the beach at night. Had 2 delicious dinners in cafe 4750. I also recommend going off property and checking out the historic district. The front desk associate made some great recommendations for restaurants and activities. Can't wait to come back!

Fantastic overall. Great staff, people like Robert at the front desk made sure that all our needs were met. It's people like him that make this property feel like your home away from home. We've been at this property several times and hope to visit it again in the near future.

First off, the service is in line with the Ritz carlton brand and the entire staff is to be commended on this. The rooms are hospitable, clean and every room has at least a partial view of the ocean.

This hotel touts itself as a family resort, so the fact that they provide a fridge without the mini bar contents(which can be added if you want) so that you can add your own drinks is a welcome addition.

The resort style drinks (Piña Colada etc) at $14 each for a small glass are overpriced by 20%, and the buffet price could use a 10% trim (Friday night seafood Buffet loos fantastic but is overpriced).

We ate at Salt and thoroughly enjoyed it, service was fantastic, views were amazing and the prices were in line with a five diamond restaurant.

The one area that needs improvement is the valet- they seem to be understaffed as I experienced waits of 10-15 minutes on several occasions. The mandatory charge of $20/day parking has me expecting better service levels. Every other part of the resort had impeccable service, so this is the laggard. Good news is that with some staffing adjustments and resource alignment, it can be fixed. The valets also load the cars luggage, so perhaps delineation of duties would help with service levels.

At the end of the day, this is a minor irritation, but does not drop the review to four stars- this is a 5 star resort that should be enjoyed.

My husband David and I were only here for two nights, and I think if had been more, I would never want to go back to real-life!! Steve at the pool, andJennifer, Brian and Amber on the Club level made our stay perfect! In addition, every staff person we encountered treated us like friends they had known forever. We can't wait to go back!!! - Colleen and David

My parents live south of Amelia Island and we snuck away for a quick child-free stay for the night (thanks mom and dad for the babysitting!!). We had a morning of spa treatments planned and weren't sure if we would be able to check in when we arrived (8:15 a.m.). Surprisingly, our room was ready and we were able to steal away for a nice breakfast before we started in the spa. Checkin was seamless and a welcome surprise! Breakfast was fantastic. My husband did the buffet and I opted for a broiled, carmelized grapefruit (AMAZING) and ham and cheese grits. So good.

The spa experience was fantastic.
It was relaxing and the staff made us feel pampered and spoiled!

By the time we were done in the spa, it was time for lunch. We decided to eat by the pool - but by 1 o'clock it was impossible to find seats around it. So, we saddled up to the pool bar and grabbed a quick drink and bite (I highly recommend the frozen mojito and the freckled turtle). Our spa day included access to the spa pool and we were able to easily find chairs there.

Dinner was in the main restaurant (Salt is closed on Mondays) and it was very good. My husband's steak was expertly prepared and my mussels were delicious - there must have been 100 mussels in the pot (I didn't even make a dent, but they were yummy). We finished the night at the sports bar shooting pool and watching some baseball.

The day we had a late checkout, so we went down to breakfast early and then found a couple of seats by the pool under an umbrella. Much easier earlier in the day!

Although we didn't have our toddler with us, the resort is VERY family friendly. In addition to their kids club, the pool, and access to the beach, there is a separate indoor area with video games, foosball, and a tiny movie theater! Our little guy would have had a blast.

That being said, we still felt like we had a couples' night away.

Thanks Ritz Carlton for allowing us to recharge our adult batteries!

Room Tip: We booked a coastal view and could see the beach on the side very well!
