“Great hotel on the beach”
Reviewed 19 August 2014 via mobile

Family of four traveled to this great hotel to get some sun during the cold spring new york weather... easy ride from the airport, right on the beach, great service at the hotel. Go for a room on the higher level overlooking the ocean, and you won't be disappointed!

We stayed here with my family for 7 nights after having had an great experience 3 years ago.

As last time the service at this location is what makes all the difference, great staff at the front desk, Storm, who helped us with our luggage was most helpful and kind.

We greatly appreciated that a uncomfortable policy on towels was changed at the pool and beach, Joe and Ray contributed to a great experience and had excellent attitudes.

The only problem we encountered was faulty air-conditioning which stopped working one night, the day after we informed guest services and someone was set to check it out. We had ask for maintenance 2 more times. The A/C never quite got to work 100% but it certainly improved.

Other than this one problem our stay was excellent and we certainly look forward to retiring to this hotel.

This was my second trip to Fort Lauderdale, first time at the Westin. I had an ocean front room. Very clean. Wifi was good. There is a walkway to the beach so you dont have to cross the street. Just south of the hotel are many restuarants and stores. A little expensive to rent the umbrellas so did without. There is no real public parking around so the beach is mainly the hotel guests. Did not use any restaurants except the starbucks.

Room Tip: There are two towers. One of which is above the gym and starbucks, the other is above the pool.

Green Features: One of the first places I saw with recycling in the room!

A friend and I spent 5 days at the Westin. We chose an ocean view room and it definitely lived up to expectations. You will NOT regret spending the extra few dollars a night for such a view. The price is what sold us on this versus the "W" next door as it was less than half the cost. The hotel is an extremely good value if you can find it for roughly $150-175 a night like we did.

PRO'S:

- Great bang for your buck
- Extremely good location
- Staff were very helpful
- Beach is very nice and staffed by the hotel
- Excellent pool service
- Ocean View
- Starbucks on location
- Very clean rooms
- Good water pressure and A/C

NEUTRAL:

- There are kids everywhere. The pool area was always filled with children. (This could be a pro if you're looking for a family oriented hotel)

- The hotel is very quiet and slows down in the evening. Remember, this is a family oriented place. If you want to party, go to the "W".

- The hotel is a bit "simple". Everything from the rooms, to the lobby give you the impression that this is just a lower end, beach front property.

CON'S:

- The tunnel from the pool area to the elevator that brings you to the beach is just absolutely disgusting. It needs to be cleaned and the elevator needs to be renovated.

- There is a charge for using a hotel umbrella on the beach. Come on, really?

CONCLUSION:

This is a very nice hotel if you're not looking to spend $250+ a night or are looking for a place with a family friendly atmosphere.

If you are staying with a significant other or are younger and looking to "party" with friends, you may be a bit disappointed. That being said, you can't beat the location at any price point.

In the $150 per night price range, this location can not be beaten in FLL.

Room Tip: Ocean View rooms are delightful

This property is located directly across A1-A from the gorgeous Ft Lauderdale beach. They even have a sky tunnel from the pool so you don't have to walk across the street. They provide towels and 2 beach chairs per room - umbrellas are extra on the beach. I was not thoroughly impressed with the pool. There were a few eateries on the same level and it seemed generally crowded and not well maintained - could use some upgrades. However Joe at the pool was of great help and service - want to make sure he gets a shout out!

The room was average. We were upgraded to a suite but the living area was completely separate from the bedroom making each feel a bit cramped. Rooms were clean and well maintained.

Some complimentary fitness classes were offered though we did not partake. Property is located two doors down from the other Starwood property, the W. Valet parking was more than $30 per day, which seemed a bit steep - no self parking available.

On a hot day, not too many external restaurants nearby though Starbucks is located within in the building was nice for a less expensive breakfast.

Overall, a nice but average hotel with nothing standing out positively or negatively.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 days. The hotel was awesome, the staff was great, especially the Valet. Each night we went to dinner we were greeted by a tall valet names James I believe. That's embarrassing. I believe his name is James, but he remembered our names. :/ He was friendly and funny and kept me from forgetting my camera in the back seat when we first arrived in our taxi and had a smile on his face all the time. Brightening spirits he made a rainy day not so bad and suggested other things we could do in the area outside of the beach. I LOVED the Green program. The room was awesome. Overall, these folks made my trip!

I spent five nights at the Westin, in a beautiful ocean-front room. The room was clean, the service was great. I used room service, as well as housekeeping (loved the 'opt out' green option, where you if you don't need your room cleaned every day, you can skip and get a voucher for $5 to use at the hotel for food or services--good for the environment and practical for spending). The restaurant staff was kind and knowledgeable (great food at Shula!). The pool attendants (who also provide towels for the beach) were all pleasant and helpful. The only partially grumpy person was one of the beach attendants, who kept arranging the beach chairs in pairs in straight lines ... rather than where people may have wanted them ... however,he wasn't there every day ... and overall did his job fine).
The overpass to the beach is a great help, so you don't have to walk through the lobby in your beach attire, but head straight through the pool area, and down to the beach.
This was the first time for me at the Westin and I am going to be back.

Note: if you need a lot of privacy in the bathroom, the rooms are designed with a sliding door and a folding wood-slats window to allow you to see the ocean from the loo ... if you close both, you'll have visual privacy but maybe not auditory privacy ... This was no issue for me, but if you are traveling as a family you may want to be aware of that before you go in. Also, no tub, but great walk-in rain shower (my prefrence anyway).

Room Tip: Splurge for an ocean front room! The window slides to open so that you can have an 'almost balco...

Green Features: Excellent. I like the option to opt-out of daily linen and towel changes, an the use of environmentally friendly cleaning and laundry detergents. Recycling throughout the hotel. The AC doesn't work when the window is open, to save on energy-waste. Nice.
