Owner description: Accredited by the American Association of Museums and listed on the national Register of Historic Places, this 35-acre historic estate on Fort Lauderdale Beach is an extraordinary blend of art, history and nature. The whimsically-designed house was built in 1920 and was home to artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett. Bonnet House was the romantic, whimsical winter getaway of wealthy Chicago-born artist Frederic Clay Bartlett and his wife, Evelyn Fortune Bartlett, an artist in her own right. But unlike lavish show-palaces of the era, Bonnet House was a very personal, intimate creation intended just for family and close friends. It's been perfectly preserved in its 1930's and 40's period of significance, full of delightful surprises.

There is nothing to dislike it was an interesting Museum. Everything you wish you could have in your garden is there. It's a master piece of love, nature and design.

It is worth your while if you like history. It is a home from the "GUILDED ERA"...very grand! Worth taking the tour to see how the wealthy lived from 1880-1920 in Southern Florida

Sitting between the Ocean and the Intracoastal is this magnificent old house and grounds. It is like going back in time.

We found the Bonnet House via an attractions search on our GPS & it was very interesting indeed. A Florida native in his late 60s who grew up locally gave us a tour. The connection with the family who owned the property & their art now at the Chicago Inst. of Art was fascinating as was their idea of this vacation property - the whimsey, casual feeling, and mixture of artistic styles, collectibles, the muraling and the furnishings and garden kept exactly as it was. Her piano room, and his studio reflected their interests (she took up painting as well). It was incredibly hot when we visited (the owners came down here in the winter) & we did not do the additional tour of the grounds. You could combine a trip here with a meal in the area, or a visit to the beach. Other people thought the entrance fees were too high - we were ok with it; visiting the Everglades air bus/boat cost more than that in the a.m.

For those seeking to find a little part of "old" Ft Lauderdale a visit to the Bonnet House is a must. Located right on A1A and the beach. It provides a look back at the history of the area as well as the family that built the house and grounds.
