“Charming Boutique Hotel”
Reviewed 11 June 2008

We were guests of the hotel for 3 days prior to a cruise of the Eastern Carribean which departed from Port Everglades.

This is a lovely boutique hotel and, while not luxurious, is a refined, understated, and tranquil experience.

Our room was located in the original plantation house and was quite small. It sufficed for our short stay, but had we needed to unpack for awhile it would have been inadequate.

Linens and bedding were very good. The towels were the best I've used in any hotel. Super! Toiletries were fine.

The room and particulalry the bathroom, however, was beginning to show signs of wear. There was some chipped paint and scratched furnishings: Nothing terrible but something that needs to be addressd given the hotel's standing as a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group.

Staff and front desk personel were pleasant but not overly helpful. We sometimes had to wait for several minurtes for someone to appear at the desk as they seem to be doing double duty elsewhere.

The grounds are lovely and the waterside patio is quite beautiful. We enjoyed our breakfasts there, which although limited were nicely prepared and presented. The dinner menu looks nice aand we were sorry we didn't dine there.

On the whole, we loved our stay and would recommend the hotel to others with the suggestion to ask for a larger room.

When is a hotel, not a hotel? When it's the Pillars. The accommodation is a small boutique hotel, based more on the Motel principal than the Hotel. The location, gardens and pool area are pretty faultless, in what used to be pretty much a waste ground for decent accommodation. The rooms themselves are nice enough, without being exceptional with virtually everything you'd expect from a hotel in this price bracket. You could argue that they could do with being updated, but that would be pretty churlish, as it all adds to the beach house charm of the place.

What sets this place apart though, is the service. All the staff we encountered were incredibly patient and friendly, amazing considering our party included one wheelchair bound, and one very unwell person. They helped us organise all manner of things for our few days in Ft Lauderdale and really made us feel at home. They also do virtually everything, which can lead to a slightly less prompt service than you might usually expect, but then you are on holiday, no?

  • Disliked — Took a bit long to get a beer.

Based on the amenities and service I will give the Pillars a 4. But, be aware that during Spring Breaks and holidays it can be filled with children which hardly provides for an"oasis" or romantic get away feel. It seems that during my stay in mid-March, at least half of the 20 rooms were occupied by couples with one or more children which made the lovely pool and deck area not so serene. Even the library was occupied by a stroller the size of a small VW.
I am not anti-children as I have 3 of my own. However, I would never bring them to such an intimate property as there is very little for them to do or space to do it in..

Our stay at The Pillars really made our trip!!

My husband and I were on a short get away from the kids and he wanted to go somewhere close to New York. I found this hotel on line and I decided to choose Fort Lauderdale simply because I wanted to stay at The Pillard. I did not think that this hotel could live up to the reviews I read but it absolutely does. This is such a unique hotel in Fort Lauderdale. A calm comes over you the minute you walk into the hotel. First you are welcomed by a wonderful, kind, helpful staff. Then there is a comfy library area. Continue out back and see the beautiful pool area, keep on going and you are on the dock which is situated on the intercoastal. You are surrounded by beautiful homes and boats. The rooms are very comfortable. We were in one of the smaller rooms but it was a fine size for me and my husband. There are places to sit and relax through out the property where you can have a drink or order food. We never ate food there but the menu looked wonderful. We loved sitting by the pool because there was rarely more than four other guests there at any one time. They serve water and iced fruit tea by the pool which was such a nice touch.

At night, the dock area is so beautiful-- a perfect place to have drink.

I was considering staying at a bigger hotel that was on the beach and that would have been such a mistake. The Pillars is literally a minute walk from the beach anyway and it is so much more intimate than the big hotels that are on the beach.

I would come to Fort Lauderdale simply to have a chance to stay at The Pillars again.

Very quiet relaxing small boutique hotel on the intercoastal waterway just a few minutes walk to the ocean. The other hotels we had considered with an ocean view also had the 2 or 4 lane hwy 1 going in front of them before you hit the beach....very noisy area so glad we didn't pay the extra $$'s just to have a ocean balcony. The rooms at the Pillars are small but well done. Unfortunately it didn't have a hairdryer nor a coffee machine which all other hotels we have stayed at have all had. If folks were talking just outside your room, it also was heard. The staff is excellent as is the food. The "restaurant" only has about 6 tables outside with a limited menu. Nonetheless we were delighted with the resort setting of luxury boats and homes across the water. The water taxi comes right to the dock.

We stayed at the Pillars for three nights before taking a cruise, reserving the large suite on the first floor. The Pillars had both great points and some bad experiences. First of all, we stayed during Winterfest and this was a lot of fun. Since the hotel is right on the waterway, the parade went right by the hotel dock. We booked the room early and also made a reservation for dinner several months in advance, which was a necessity considering that they only have about six tables. It was a lovely evening, the dinner was very good, and overall the experience was delightful.

We also liked the fact that the water taxi can be picked up right there at the dock, and we enjoyed riding that around on the waterways the next day.

The room was nice, however, the bathroom john did not work properly. We tried to call to get it fixed, but nobody answered.
My husband also went to the front desk and no one was there.

Breakfast was also a disappointment. We came out and waited at a table for over half an hour with no waiter in sight. Finally, my husband went to the front desk. Again, no one was there. I tried calling several times and no one answered. It felt like the guests were left to themselves. Other guests walked off in a huff. We finally DID get our breakfast.

That evening I decided to call in the breakfast order ahead of time to see if the experience could be improved. Again, I had to let the phone ring and ring before anyone answered. However, breakfast the next morning was delivered promptly.

Our suite was expensive, and one would expect better attention and more even service overall at a "Small Leading Hotel."

To be fair, I should add that the receptionist asked us upon checkout about our stay. She listened carefully to our remarks and told us that the phone which the front desk person normally carried around with her went on the blitz that weekend. Nonetheless, that doesn't explain generally poor service.

I should also mention that one should watch the "killer" step which is just outside the doors to the rooms on the first floor. It is not easily noticeable and my husband fell flat on his face. Of course, that is our fault mostly, not the establishment....but something to keep in mind.

My husband and I had a wondeful stay at the Pillars pre-cruise. We we're looking for a unique, romantic place to stay on the water and this met all of our needs. It is not an inexpensive hotel, but in this case, you actually do get what you pay for. The pictures are accurate and the staff is great. We we're also lucky enough to be there for the boat parade, enjoyed the view, supplied our own wine. Great place, highly recommend it.
