Description: The Downtowner is a Fort Lauderdale Institution for over 20 years. Situated on the banks of The New River in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. It's a fabulous location to have a business lunch, dinner or take in the view of the mega yachts as the go by from the bar.

As soon as you step in the door, the appropriateness of the name "Downtowner Saloon" strikes you right away. It looks like a bar -- a bar from the good old days! The walls are lined with historic photos of Fort Lauderdale in the way-back-when, and these intrigued me. As a bar, I've no doubt it's great.

The selection of craft beers was both large and interesting, and I certainly enjoyed the one I chose. The food was good, but for the price I would think a bigger portion of fish could be served. I did get more mahi for less money in other places in Fort Lauderdale. The potatoes and Caesar salad were both good, but not outstanding. Same would go for the service. The server was competent, and did the basics all right. In between times though, it was hard to get her eye. She seemed to be spending time socializing with her colleagues. Again, given the prices being asked a higher standard of service is not an unreasonable expectation.

It's a great location, with its own stop on the Water Taxi tour boats and its own free parking lot too! The food was good, and the service was acceptable, but both would have to go higher to come up to the standards of the bar offerings.

We went for lunch and discovered they were also serving a Sunday brunch all you could eat for $13.95. Considering the eggs Benedict with crab meat, pretty good deal. All riverfront tables were busy but we had great service inside. Try the salad with pistachio crusted grilled goat cheese. Skip the lobster bisque, it's like cheese soup with a few flakes of lobster. Easy free parking.

We stopped by the Downtowner whilst on the water taxi for a beer. The outside sitting area is limited and although by the canal, there is nothing really to see (and due to a complete lack of breeze, very humid). Although it sounds contradictory, inside was really nice, feeling very much like a New York Irish bar. We may well aim to go after dark in future and sit inside.

Great location right by the New River, watch all the gigantic yachts cruise by. Near the courthouse. My wife had a salad with Portobello mushrooms, red peppers, etc. that she loved, I had clams on the half shell - the first I've had in years (they're not available in NW Alabama), and they were wonderful. We sat at an outside table in wonderful weather and thoroughly enjoyed it.
