“Right Across From The Beach”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2013

The best thing about the Merriweather is that it is steps from the beach and the units have fully equipped kitchens. The staff is very friendly, and there are beach chairs, umbrellas, beach towels, beach toys, and sun lotions available for use. There are also books to borrow and free WI-FI. Now, having said that, I must say that this is in no way a "resort". It is an older motel / apartment building. Other than a small swimming pool, it doesn't have any of the typical resort amenities. It does NOT have: restaurant/bars, spa, exercise room, elevators, shampoo, etc. in the room, hair dryers, laundry facility, beautiful grounds, etc. The rooms are modest and in dire need of updating - the bathroom in particular. The bathroom light was rusty, the cabinet was chipped, the sink was worn, and the glass shower door was moldy. The unit was relatively clean except for a few stray hairs and a potato chip left over from a previous guest. Rooms have few windows, therefore they are dark. A large window looks unto the common walkway, so shades have to be closed or everybody walking by can look right into your unit. We missed having a personal balcony or area to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning in private. The bed was comfortable (foam top mattress), but our room was noisy with street sounds. The Merriweather is wedged between two busy streets, and cars and stereos could be heard very late into the night. There was also some loud hammering early one morning in one of the nearby units. Because the Merriweather is small, we found the office closed a couple of times when we needed to get beach towels, etc. The Merriweather is adequate if you know what to expect, just don't expect a Resort. Be aware also that the beach directly in front is a popular gay beach and it gets crowded.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not near the busy streets

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review of The Merriweather. Unfortunately, I believe that while you were here we had some pretty bad weather. Hopefully your next trip to Ft. Lauderdale will be as sunny as we know it to be! We have taken into consideration all of the things you have mentioned and we are looking into what you mentioned as a "moldy" shower door. You're right, we don't have an elevator, restaurant, spa or bar. However we are among the best restaraunts/bars and spas in Ft. Lauderdale. As you can see from our many excellent reviews and our many repeat guests, that this is part of the charm of our place. We are one of the only small, quaint and friendly places left on Ft. Lauderdale beach and it makes us stand apart from all of the big "chain" hotels. We do have hairdryers (in the office for borrow) and we do supply soap in the rooms as well. The difference between us and a big resort is that all of the things you mentioned in your review (beach chairs and umbrellas, lotion etc) are FREE here. Parking alone at a "resort" in town can cost up to $30 per day and we have free parking. All of our ammenities are listed on our website as well as RCI's. We hope you will try us again. Thank you.

I seldom write reviews but wanted to write this one and say what a great place this is. We couldn't have asked for anything better. Quaint, right across from the beach...the best people watching in town. My partner is a fanatic about cleanliness and she loved this place... absolutely love this place! Thanks Mary Jo, you are the best!

FREE parking, free beach chairs, free suntan lotion, free beach towels. We had planned 2 nights in Ft. Lauderdale and 3 in Key West but upon arrival at the Merriweather Resort, we changed plans due to the fabulous accommodations, fantastic location, and wonderful personnel. The accommodations included a kitchen, dining area, living room, bedroom, bathroom with tub, lots of closet space and mirrors. The pool is more than adequate with flotation devices provided and the beach, well, the beach is incredible and just a 1-minute walk across the street. But the best part are those who work there that really made our stay the best. Mary Jo has been the manager for 30 years and Missy has been there 15 years and they really go so above and beyond to accommodate. In fact, here's a perfect example. The hotel has a 1-week cancel policy. 9 days before we were due to arrive, I spoke to Mary Jo to advise I might have to cancel due to health reasons. Her response: don't even think about the cancel policy, just concentrate on getting better. Thankfully, the problem passed (kidney stone) and we were able to go on what turned out to be one of the best vacations ever mostly in part due to the Merriweather Resort. I am a travel agent and am used to staying at chain hotels but thank goodness for Trip Advisor. I was getting reviews on other major hotels in Ft. Lauderdale and came across Merriweather and the rest is history. Planning to go back in March

Very friendly place. Staff helpful and service is second to none. Set right across the road from the beach and within walking distance of several beachfront restaurants, stores and state parks, this is a wonderful vacation spot. Units are clean and comfortable with a great pool and nice landscaping. Been coming to the Merriweather for many years and never had a bad experience. Made many friends here.

This resort is adorable!!! Nestled beach-side, just past the Ritz, you will find the Merriweather. Your eyes may be glazed over from all of the other attractions on the beach - but don't pass this one up!!

My mom and I were in search of a place to stay for a night while enjoying a music festival, after I jumped out of the car on/off for an hour to seek availability in numerous other spots, we decided to hop into the Merriweather. As soon as I walked into the office, I knew we had found a good place - a beautiful, sweet-as-can-be husky lay on the floor and a cat was perched on the counter, with another super-cure pup behind the counter.

We took the penthouse, as it was the only room available. When we walked in, we were in awe! Glass window/ceiling combinations in both the kitchen and the master bathroom were a delight! Both rooms had an oceanfront view and a balcony. It was quite hard to leave the next day - we felt like queens.

Long story short - this place is great! The staff was overly awesome, the room was excellent and I would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat! Thanks for the AMAZING early birthday present, Merriweather!

Room Tip: The penthouse was amazing!!! Perfect for a few people or 2 couples traveling together!!

My husband and I spent a long weekend at the Merriweather recently. We thoroughly enjoyed having the conveniences of home with the apartment style accommodations. As previous reviews have mentioned, the decor is a bit dated, but otherwise this place is great. It's extremely well maintained and the staff members were very pleasant and helpful. We had a king bed that was very comfortable and the kitchen had all the necessary utensils & appliances....including a blender for those poolside cocktails. There were blow dryers at the front desk if u needed to borrow one.....as well as beach chairs/towels.

We loved the idea that we didn't have to rent a car for our short stay. This location lends itself to being central enough to get around via foot, trolley (50cents), taxi, or water taxi. The Galleria mall is probably within a mile from the property and there's a Publix grocery store across the street. You can take the trolley (runs on street in front of hotel...just flag it down) to the mall drop off location and then walk over to publix and take a cab back for around $10. Keep in mind that Publix (& CVS) only have beer and wine. Our cab driver stopped at a little bar/liquor store location (don't be frightened...i went inside alone) called "The Hut" right behind Publix for our cocktail needs. Turns out their wine prices(wine openers in kitchen) were also cheaper ($10/bottle less on my purchase) than at CVS(open 24 hrs), where I later walked (1 block) from our hotel to get a bag of ice. Hotel freezers have ice makers, but couldn't keep up with blending. The Galleria mall also has a few higher end chain restaurant/bars with outdoor seating....PF Changs, Capitol Grill, Trulux, Seasons 52 (piano in bar), & Blue Martini (live music at night). The other area that we visited on our previous trip was "Los Olas Blvd".....in the other direction from the hotel, with plenty of unique restaurant and bar options....another short cab ride. There are plenty of low key, "fun places" to enjoy eating and drinking within walking distance from the hotel as well. Not-to-mention, you have the Ritz Carlton, Westin, "W", and other nice hotels on either side for upscale dining options "by foot".

Although we don't have pets, this is a pet friendly hotel. I have a tendancy to suffer from allergies, but didn't have any problems during our stay. It was actually rather endearing to see the cats "right at home" on the property. None of the animals were intrusive.

This is definitely not a "party property" and management does not tolerate late night noise. Things are pretty quiet and family oriented. That's not to say that the adults weren't enjoying poolside legal beverages during the day. However, everything stays under control.

We had previously stayed at the Westin and were intrigued as we walked by the merriweather, so we stopped by to take a look at the rooms. It was clearly a "great find"...and we're so glad we gave it a try and would definitely return.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 105 on the first floor directly across from office. we personally liked being on...
