Owner description: Nestled in the heart of a modern downtown, History Fort Lauderdale's campus includes 3 museums that tell the story of how a wartime fort became a modern city. The campus is the largest collection of historic buildings remaining in Broward County. The History Museum, housed in the 1905 New River Inn, contains exhibits from prehistoric through present day. The King Cromartie House Museum (1907) is set as if the family will return at any moment for Sunday supper. Upstairs tour Louise King's sewing room, family bedrooms with period sleepwear, children's room with period dollhouse and antique dolls. The 1899 Schoolhouse Museum is complete with period wooden desks and textbooks. Docent-led tours of all 3 museums begin every day at 1 PM, 2 PM and 3PM. Walking & Boat Tours, which include admission to all 3 museums, are also available with reservations.

We did the guided tour and found it extremely interesting. Afterward we visited the upstairs of the old Inn and were given another very informal tour by a volunteer who was very interesting and knowledgeable about the history of Ft Lauderdale. We had no idea that Ft Lauderdale's history and this gave us a good background.

I walked down to this area from the Riverside Hotel where I was staying. It was only about a twenty-minute walk. This area is very historic and contains many of the original buildings from Old Fort Lauderdale. I would not feel safe here at night, as there are many homeless beggars all around this area. While in this area I recommend Brew Urban Café for great coffee and I recommend Tarpon Bend for a fantastic lunch.

This is a collection of old, mostly original buildings, located next to the New River downtown. The New River Inn contains current exhibitions plus a museum dedicated to the history of the area. The King-Cromartie House is the one built by the Ed King family and contains many artifacts specific to the house and the times. The replica School House shows life in the class room as in 1899. One price gets you a guided tour through all three buildings. Excellent - just wish our guide hadn't been so rushed. Look out for discount coupons, found in local Florida guide books, to enjoy a $2 each cheaper entry fee

This place would be much nicer if not on every corner there was a pan handler or homeless person sleeping on the benches where you could really sit and watch the water. Disappointed
