“Close call between 3 & 4, but good service puts it over”
Reviewed 9 September 2011

A good vacation can make everything seems better. But when you step back for a review like this, you have to ask yourself – were the accommodations really that special? I have stayed at better timeshare exchanges than Coconut Bay. On its own, the place would probably rate a solid 3 – totally average, neither exceptional nor awful. But Coconut Bay is well-managed and provides a level of service that pushes it up to 4.
My wife, her sister, and I stayed at the Coconut Bay Resort over the week of August 27-September 3. We exchanged our unit in Cancun through Interval International. However, Coconut Bay is primarily affiliated with RCI. The resort itself is a converted condominium complex built in the early 1970’s. A friend of mine who now lives in the area describes the place as “a piece of old Florida”.
The area seemed safe. The resort is less than a block off Sunrise Blvd, two blocks to beach, and within short walking distance to Hugh Birch Taylor State Park and Bonnet House (I highly recommend the latter). The resort is also centrally located within easy driving distance to major areas of Fort Lauderdale. There are a number of shops and restaurants within walking distance, and more shopping (including the Galleria Mall and a Publix Grocery) just over the bridge.
We stayed in a one-bedroom unit on the 3rd floor. There was only one elevator, and it had a bad smell to it. We tried spraying it with Febreeze, but that didn’t help. But the elevator ride was generally less than 30 seconds, so we could put up with it. The resort provided luggage carts, which were very helpful. We frequently used the outside stairs when we weren’t carrying anything.
Our unit was basic, but quite nice and very clean overall. The furnishings were dated but serviceable furnishings. My wife and sister-in-law really liked the artwork. The finishings in the bathroom and the kitchen seemed on the cheap side, but everything worked. The kitchen was basic but adequately equipped. Similarly, the TVs were older tube-type models, but they worked fine too. The unit had an enclosed patio in the back overlooking the waterway. Strangely enough, there was also a sauna off the patio, but no heating element. There was a King size bed in the bedroom and a pull-out sofa in the living room. Both were comfortable. The resort offered towel exchange mid-week.
Coconut Bay has a very nice and well-maintained pool and hot-tub area. The wi-fi connection is only available at the pool. It went down one afternoon. However the front desk told us to reboot our computer, and it worked fine after that. There are a couple of covered areas, which are useful when it gets too hot or when it rains (you can expect both when you are visiting Florida in August). The resort also owns the boat slips off the waterway behind the complex. While we didn’t use them, it adds a nice character to the place. The resort also provides a coin laundry for guests. Like a lot of things at Coconut Bay, they are older but work fine.
The service really makes the difference here. As I mentioned before, our unit was very clean. In addition, the cleaning, maintenance and landscaping staff were out working very day, and the property was very well-maintained. The front office also provided excellent service. Check-in and check-out were a snap. I went to the front office several times to ask questions, and they were very helpful and friendly. On Monday morning, the staff offered coffee and doughnuts by the pool while the manager talked about local attractions and activities. We went to the timeshare pitch afterword, but it only lasted half an hour and was not high pressure.
Other than the fact that we had a great vacation, it is hard to say why Coconut Bay should rate higher than average. But the staff works so hard to make the place welcoming and homey that we found ourselves liking it a lot. And that, I suppose, is what makes a place above average.

Rooms are nice and the kitchen is fully equipped. There is a new Publix grocery store just opened close by. I suggest Big Louies calzones just across the bridge and the nature park across the street. Lots of great dinning at the food court in the mall 8 blocks away. We enjoyed the water taxi and being just 2 blocks from the beach. Great location!

Located two blocks from Fort Lauderdale Beach and within walking distance to shopping & restaurants you couldn't have a better location, other than day trips it offers the only resort amenity is the pool & spa which is nice but on the small side, there is a sauna and several gas grills for guest use. The chamber maids were quite loud almost every morning, if you weren't awake when they made their rounds they would see to it you were. While the resort is close to the intra costal it isn't located right on it. Traffic from nearby East Sunrise Dr can be noisy and there's also a fire station across the street. The rooms and resort in general were clean and kitchen well equipped.

Room Tip: back part of the resort

Went here with girlfriends and had a fabulous vacation in the timeshare unit. We totally lucked out with our awesome room. We had a balcony overlooking the beautiful pool area where we could enjoy morning coffee and afternoon wine. Our initial though of our studio size room was WOW. It was charming and clean and larger than we'd expected. The decor was stylish and more it more than adequately met all of our needs for a splendid vacation!!

The staff was very helpful and friendly. Checkin was quick and they answered all of our questions. There were a couple items we specifically asked for and they quickly made sure we received them. When checking in we received four beach towels and two room keys. You keep the towels all week and return when leaving. Our linens/towels were changed over once while there. One thing we wished that we'd had was a room safe. Otherwise everything in our room was great.

The pool is amazing. The area is cleaned every morning...meaning all tables & grills are washed down. With our view from the balcony we watched the hard work each day. The pool was very clean and refreshing. There were more than enough new lounge chairs. They had a couple places where you could be completely in the shade under canopies. There were three grills for guest use. There was a hottub as well. The pool was enclosed in a lush area of vegetation, which added to the charm of the pool area. On one side of the pool was a marina waterway where some very lovely yachts were parked. You could walk up and down the boardwalk for a bit but then it was a deadend. In our opinion, it added character to the resort. We loved the whole area.

There is a 7-Eleven as other people have written. Because we were without car and on a budget, we did utilize this store a number of times. However, there is an area just a block away headed towards the beach where there are little stores and shops. We found a jampacked grocery store where we saw local shopowners heading into. We found some additional groceries here. There are the beach shops, ice cream shop and restaurants all right in that area. We enjoyed taking this little detour walk. For beverages, we found that the places all sold beer and wine but not liquor. However, there is a liquor store across the lift-bridge (which is across the parking lot). There was also a CVS store there and soon to be a Publix opening (??which I think is a grocery store????)

We ate most meals in but we did go out for supper. There is a yummy Mexican restaurant across the parking lot of the resort. We went to a fabulous Chinese restaurant across the lift-bride...both are walking. We went to a couple beach places as well. We did ride the city bus. It cost $1.50 each way. Very easy.

The beach....we loved it. Because there isn't much for shade, you really may wish to have an umbrella. Before completely checking things out, we bought an umbrella. We may not have needed to do this however. The beach shops up the road from our resort, directly across from the beach had beach chairs and umbrellas for rent. They charged $4 to $5 each for all day. The city has lounge chairs and umbrellas for rent as well but they were quite a bit more money. These beach chairs more than served our need for a fun day on the beach.

All in all, we had a wonderful vacation. We enjoyed how clean Ft. Lauderdale was, the people were more than friendly and our time was another great memory!! Staying at the Coconut Bay Resort can easily be done without a car if you are willing to walk a bit. It is a charming little resort. :-)

Coconut Bay Resort is conveniently located only about one block from the beach. It has very well kept grounds, clean rooms, and a nice pool. Our studio was well equipped and had tropical decor that was inviting. We enjoyed the warm pool daily. Ground keepers maintained the beautiful vegetation surrounding the pool area and the staff cleaned the area every morning. Having the waterway adjacent to the property gave it extra charm. The resort is a smaller friendly place to stay. I would definitely stay at Coconut Bay again if I return to Ft. Lauderdale.

This is an "old Florida" style property which needs updating. Have stayed at this property on and off for the last 23 years on a yacht in the canal. The yacht has been broken into and the car was stolen. It is a timeshare property and the timeshare salesman lives onsite. When a new high rise was built across the canal, it puts the pool at this place in the shade from early afternoon on. The bathroom facilities at the pool are in terrible shape. They don't even have a mirror in the bathroom. The hot tub is out of commission alot. There are raccoons that love the pool area from the early evening on. And, on top of everything else, there is a fire station right across the street and the sirens go off every time they leave, which is several times per day and night! Look elsewhere!
