Coconut Bay Resort is just off the Intracoastal Waterway and has its own water inlet and fishing/boat moorage. As it is just a 2 storey building it is rather overshadowed by its much taller neighbours so the views are not spectacular, although all bedrooms have fly-neted covered lanasi that look out onto the waterway. The corridor outside the door just faces the car park, which has plenty of space for all. The pool is good, with varied seating areas, plenty of shade if required and pool beds, all set in well tended gardens.
Checking in was very quick, we arrived early and were able to go straight to the apartment. Must mention Nixa on the Front Desk, who was very friendly and helpful, telling us all we needed to know. When checking out we did notice another problem - at checking out time all the luggage trolleys were being used by the staff which meant we had to carry our own luggage to the lift and out to the car park. Surely the staff have enough time after check-out time to use the trolleys? After all, the bedding and towels they were loading them with were not going anywhere for the sake of waiting an extra hour!
The living room is large with very comfortable chairs and sofas and good furniture. There is a separate kitchen, well equipped with electrical gadgets, pots, pans, cutlery etc. Narrow but functional. There is a separate wash basin and toilet in the corridor, and a large bedroom with en-suite bathroom then the already mentioned netted lanai facing the water. There was lots and lots of storage space - probably plenty even if it was your main home.
We would have given 4 stars for the hotel but for a few of issues - under the bed we found an empty water bottle, 25 and 5 cent coins, a price tag and quite a lot of dust. We had a constantly running toilet in the bathroom and the cover of the air conditioner control was broken, and fell off. We reported all these after the first night and only the air conditioner control was fixed during our stay. We were tempted to make more fuss about the dust but as it was a tiled floor we could at least see that there weren't any nasties lurking in the dust!! Not very impressive though.
The Coconut Bay is a couple of blocks from the beach but there are shops, bars and restaurants along the way. There is a large Galleria shopping mall and a Publix supermarket a few minutes by car away. A trolley bus runs along the cost road so it is easy to get around if you don't want to drive.
We enjoyed our stay in spite of the dust but would probably stay elsewhere if visiting Fort Lauderdale again.
