“Very Nice Resort, friendly owners, clean rooms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2008

This is a very nice resort, one that is well taken care of and close to everything. I came across this place by accident, and have been back three times since. The owners are very nice, when you arrive late, they have the air condioning on in the room for you, they leave the lights on, they make you feel welcomed and truly it is a nice little paradise to escape to. I would very much reccomend this resort to anyone looking for a specialty resort in South Florida, this is by far one of the nicest ones I have stayed at and I just look forward to going back again. Most of the other guests were very nice as well, I made friends from France, Switzerland and Germany, not to mention guests from the States as well, truly a diverse crowd of travelers. While most of the guests are 20 or 30-somethings, this last trip down seemed to have a lot of more retired/mature people who were not very respectful of others, unfortunately this was after hours and the their is nobody from the staff there during the overnight hours. All in all is a wonderful resort, just is a crap shoot what sort of other guests will be there.

Perfect weekend at resort. Room was large-kept clean-and quiet. Staff was super friendly and helpful(dennis-thanks for getting my room ready even though I showed up 3 hrs early). Two properties meant two choices-usual wild fun with the boys on worthington side at night--or mellow/quiet time on alcazar side. 3 blocks to beach..very safe area,,met many other friendly guests ages 25-60..the place just worked for me-will return.

Third time I've stayed at the Alcazar - property adjacent to Worthington, which costs a bit more and has more amenities in the rooms. Rooms in Alcazar are clean and well kept. However, office, computer, breakfast, and happy hour are all on Worthington side. Landscaping around pool is lusher, but more sun (in March) around Alcazar pool.

Diverse crowd -- generally friendly and many repeats. Near beach -- a bit of a hike to Sebastian St., but quite doable.

Must have a car to get to Wilton Manors and shopping. Taxis add up very quickly. Only 15-20 minutes to airport, but avoid beach traffic on weekend afternoons (don't take 17th St. Causeway; instead use Rt. 1 to Sunrise).

One day of rain out of five -- finished a novel.

Plan to go back as good value for money and stays fuller during the week.

Really concerned about the condition of this property, which has clearly taken a steep drop since the last time I stayed here in April 2007.

Our room had a cracked front window, and the bathroom was what one expects in a one-star motel on US1: chipped bathtub, rusty towel rack, noisy air conditioner, horrible tile work, mold all over. Wi-fi did not work the first night either, but did work the second day.

Management was completely uncooperative in our efforts to either get a better room or allowing us to check out early and get a refund on the second night.

I'm sorry but I couldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I appreciate all comments and review them from time to time. I will agree a couple years ago the Alcazar was in need of updating. Since then all Bathtubs have been replaced, tile repaired and replaced where needed. All new pedestal sinks and Kohler Toilets installed. The resort has come along way.
Thank you for your comments.

A four night stay was just not long enough at the Alcazar!
From the moment I arrived, I knew I would have an enjoyable time mainly because of the office clerk.
He took the time to explain everything about the resort and took me on a tour before he showed me to my room.

The Alcazar and the Worthington Resort next door are now joined together under the same ownership. The Alcazar is an older resort built in the 50's I'm told and needs some updating. But it seems it is slowly being upgraded. In the meantime, enjoy the pool and the cosy atmosphere and take advantage of the hot tub and the pool at the Worthington.

Happy hours on Friday and Saturdays were a fun way to meet and socialize with guests from both resorts. I was a travelling alone and alas most guests were couples. But I still met some great people including a Canadian couple from Vancouver and a gentleman who used to work in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It's so nice to meet people from home when you're away!

The beach was a short 5 minute walk away. The water was wonderfully cool and refreshing. But the sand is difficult to walk on, I think mainly because the beach crew is raking it with a machine frequently. The gay beach at Sebastian Street is just another 10 minutes south by foot..

The sad thing is that huge hotel towers (including one from Trump) are being built right along the beach which will provide unwanted shade for the smaller resorts like Alcazar in the North Birch area.

Overall, Fort Lauderdale is a neat place to visit and is becoming a gay mecca... but having a car is a definite must. The city and surrounding area are sprawling. I spent 45 minutes by car getting to a sprawling outlet mall - the Sawgrass Mills. The bargains were decent but be wary that not all mall stores are outlets and many are regular retailers with higher prices.

A trip to the small enclave of Wilton Manors is a must with its gay shops, bars and restaurants. You'll feel right at home.

Since I had a car, I took a day trip to Palm Beach. It was a pleasant but very slow drive along the Atlantic coastal highway, A1A. Be wary of frequent waits at drawbridges as the highway parallels the intracoastal waterway system. I wisely took the interstate highway back to Lauderdale. But pay close attention to exit signs and ramps... local maps can be deceiving.

Fort Lauderdale Int'l Airport is easy to navigate and to find your rental car counter. Avoid Miami Airport if you can, it's a zoo compared to this one. Try and provide your own car insurance, rental companies will stiff you on this and other fees and taxes.
