“Unbelievable experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2013

I took my wife to the Lago Mar Resort for a surprise 40th birthday. The reason I am responding is because it was the most remarkable experience we have ever had. The accomodations were grand, but the real reason for our memorable occasion is because of our dining experience at the hotels restaurant, Aquario.

From the moment we entered, we were treated like royalty. From the front desk to the waiter, Guy. They were fabulous, tentative, courteous, etc.

As my wife and our two guests were looking over the menu, Chef Phillip Damien Kahn approached the table and advised us to not order from the menu because he had something special in mind for us. He asked us what we liked and disliked and explained his menu of the evening.

We were in awe at that point and experienced the most delicious meal of our lives going forward. From the appetizer, which was rock lobster macaroni & cheese, all the way to dessert, it was a culmination of flavors dancing in our mouths. Our guests, whom have travelled and experienced fine dining often across the united states and abroad were amazed at the way Chef Phillip mixed the various dishes together and they agreed that it was one of the best meals they ever had.

One dish in particular, the salad, which was watermelon/raspberry vinegarette over arugula had my wife cringing at the site and she said she wouldn't even try it. I explained that she thought everything else prior was delicious, so why not? She did, and finished every last bite, and not for us being in the presence of others, would have "licked the plate clean" as she put it.

I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is dining in south florida. I cannot thank the staff, and especially Chef Phillip, which we nicknamed "Dr. PhilGood", enough. It was a memory of a lifetime.

Sincerely,
Mr. Wyatt

Room Tip: Ask for a room which faces the ocean. If unavailable, 1st floor by the beautiful pool.

Found Lago Mar through TripAdvisor. We were looking for quiet, beach time in Ft. Lauderdale after running around the theme parks in Orlando. Stayed at Lago Mar toward the end of Thanksgiving week and it was everything we hoped for - charming decor throughout the resort, beautiful pools and surrounding property and miles of beachfront away from other properties. Our teenagers enjoyed the pools, live music, mini golf greens, ping pong and other activities on site. Had several meals at Acquario including Thanksgiving and the food was very good. We enjoyed speaking with the staff at Lago Mar -- all were friendly, helpful and came from interesting/diverse backgrounds. We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite which was very roomy. The living room had separate twin pull-out beds which our kids said were a bit uncomfortable/lumpy, but we had no complaints about the king bed in the separate bedroom and the bedding and linens were of high quality. Mike Holmes was kind enough to delay his birthday celebration in order to take our family photos at various locations around the property and on the beach. The photos were outstanding despite the strong winds on the beach that day. We highly recommend using Mike's photography services. Love the Lago Mar story and the warm atmosphere of the place. We felt like part of a big, extended family and definitely plan to return for a longer stay on our next visit.

this resort is a true gem that shines like no other. friendly staff. you are on a private beach looking at the cruise port basically. wonderful rooms. real old florida charm. great beach, fantastic restaurant dining and great pools. we had the best time. i think we are spoiled enough to want to stay here from here on out. we stayed here pre cruise and loved it. the outdoor areas, pools and other public areas are to die for. easy walking, despite the private and quiet area. we like to walk, so found it easy to get around or to walk the long strand of beach to just about anywhere. we loved this place.

This is a very nice hotel in an easy to find spot. The front faces onto the intra coastal waterway with plenty of free parking. The rear exits onto a great beach with plenty of loungers (chargeable). Lots of room around the pool areas when we there. We were told that the hotel is run as a family oriented place but that they also have 100+ “members”. There are several eating places but all except the formal restaurant were shut by 9 – just when we typically eat. It was very good but in a large dining room there were only four tables taken. It was quite expensive if you plan to eat there every night. In fact all of the dining options were on the expensive side - just not as dear as the restaurant.
We tried the bar a couple of times but always seemed to be the only “regular” holidaymakers there. Everyone else seemed to have disappeared off somewhere. There was a small knot of about 10 people around the bar who all seemed to know each other and the staff very well. We were dealt with pleasantly enough but felt as if we were on the outside looking in. Then we remembered the “100+ members” we were told about.
The “executive” room that we had was excellent but the advertised “kitchenette” was far too small and ill equipped to be called that.
On two consecutive nights our bathroom flooded from the room above. On both occasions staff responded and sorted it quickly. On check out we waited for the apology but none came so we queried their intentions towards the bill. The receptionist didn’t seem to know anything at first but then came up with a voucher for a free breakfast – on checkout!
He asked if we wanted to see the manager who after a short wait turned up initially with the same superior condescending manner we had seen from one or two other staff. The majority are really nice but some not. With some prompting he realised the issue wasn’t just going to go away with some platitudes and was much more professional and courteous. The end result was a substantial reduction in the bill and eventually what seemed like a genuine apology.
We liked the hotel very much but couldn’t stop wondering if it is set up to provide a real family experience or a jolly nice place for a relatively small group of members that possibly could not happen without tourist dollars? It does both well but if like us you like some atmosphere after 9 then give it a miss. We enjoyed our short stay but probably wouldn’t visit again.

We selected this resort based on the beach front location and room types. The resort is outstanding and location is perfect. We paid for an oceanfront 1 bedroom suite and the room lived up to its billing with a beautiful view of the water. Hotel is an older property but very well maintained. Our room was extremely large including 2 full bathrooms and a kitchenette. The oversize living room sofa pulls out to (2) twin beds and is perfect for kids and small teenagers. The "free" beach chairs are easily accessible and comfortable. It was nice not having to rush out to get chairs everyday. Resort staff are very friendly. Resort includes private beach, two pools, playground area and putting green. The resort is very safe and easy for our daughter and friend to be on their own. Lago Mar employee Michael Holmes took pictures of our daughter and her friend on our last night. Michael spent an hour taking pictures of them all over the beach and property, edited them and provided via a flash drive. He was super nice, picture quality is fantastic and I guarantee that the girls will remember the trip forever.

Overall we had an amazing Thanksgiving at the property! Everyone is super friendly and worst part of the trip was having to leave.

My husband and I just got married at Lago Mar and stayed for our honeymoon! This place is amazing, it's a true resort, not a hotel. The resort is gorgeous and the rooms are beautiful (not that you spend much time in them with the views, hot sun and all the activities Lago offers). The employees are genuinely friendly and super accommodating. Lago Mar employee Michael Holmes was kind enough to be our wedding photographer, the pictures were back to us ASAP and are absolutely beautiful! Michael also does family portraits so make sure to meet him at the tiki hut! If you decide to stay at Lago, make sure you take them up on the "bed and breakfast" offer, its worth it. The breakfast buffet is impressive. Lago has 3 restaurants, a soda shop, boutique, spa and so much more. This is a wonderful place to relax, not for people looking to party. I know I will be back as soon as possible!

Spent a few days here with my family. Stayed in the main building, which I believe is the newer. (the older building has a musty smell) No complaints. Kids had plenty to do. The room was clean and the employees were friendly, especially Josephine from Queen via DR (I believe). She ran the beach hut and was outgoing and pleasant. Just when I thought I was comfortable laying on a chair under a palm tree...she asked if I would like a pillow. We will definitely return.
