Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach - a Doubletree by Hilton Hotel
Ranked #54 of 131 Hotels in Fort Lauderdale
Reviewed 20 March 2013

We stayed here to finish off a week of cruising. The view is excellent. We stayed in an ocean view room and had an excellent view of the New River Harbor as well as the ocean. The yachts and homes and bridges during the day and lit up at night provided a beautiful view. We were on the 16th floor facing south - and could even see the cruise ships coming and going from Port Everglades.

The beach is across the street (there is a walk way from the hotel to the beach over the road so you don't have to fight the traffic) and the water taxi stop #7 is within walking distance. There is a restaurant and bar in the hotel but there are also other restaurants within walking distance. I would recommend for a cheap breakfast - "All That's Food" which is in the parking lot of this hotel. It is also a convenience store where you can pick up anything you need for your room. They sell beer and wine there too that you can keep in the refridgerator in your room if that is your thing.

We ate at The Bahia Cabana Tiki Bar which is located on the waterfront right near the water taxi stop #7. It was within walking distance of the hotel. Don't let the Bahia Cabana Resort (hotel) that you have to walk through to get to this outdoor restaurant scare you away from this little treasure. The food was not disappointing. The service was good and the prices were not high. If you like eating outside on the water front in an informal location - come here and eat. They have seafood, ribs, chicken and sandwiches and other selections and a full bar.

I highly recommend taking the water taxi tour. Get the day pass and ride it all day on and off stopping at the different stops for $20.00. You will see and learn a lot of local history from the tour guide on the taxi. This was about a 4 hour ride. There are refreshments on board including beer and wine on the larger two story taxi's. The smaller taxi's can take you to places where the larger boats cannot fit.

The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. There was a small glitch in our room reservation and they quickly corrected the problem and they later even provided a follow up note with a gift in our room. Our room was very clean and quite large. The balcony is very small. The television was a large flat screen, the bed was comfortable and there was a table in the room as well as a refridgerator and coffee maker. We did not use any of the pool or spa ammenities.

This hotel is very convenient to the Fort Lauderdale Airport - only minutes away.

Room Tip: Tower Rooms on the south side - that are ocean veiw are excellent - you can see the harbor and the...

Checked in on a Thursday afternoon and did not receive service until late Saturday afternoon. Asked maid on Friday for service and did not receive. Finally saw a manager in Lobby on Saturday early afternoon and asked for service. Everything was slow - mostly the elevators. Very busy with convention in house and spring breakers. Was not acknowledged for being a HiltonHonors member (even though one of my nights was on points). Did receive 2 waters in my room on second day (guess they failed to notice the dirty room). Parking is a little over the edge at $22.00 for self parking. Ross at the Waves bar was fantastic, although the drinks were quite pricy - almost $10.00 which includes tip. Stayed here for three nights last summer and it was fantastic. This time not so. The nicest thing was my view from the 13th floor.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor - the views are fantastic.

Our trip was a mixture of business and pleasure and my wife accompanied me. Easy to walk to nearby restaurants and retail establishments. Even during spring break the beach activity was not interruptive of our stay and security to and from this hotel was monitored. You can't beat this location for access to waterway transportation, fishing and tour boating. My wife had lots to choose from while I attended my conference events. We drove in from Chicago in our conversion van and found the parking facilities adequate and secure. Although the road traffic on Seaside was high during spring break at times, driving southbound to other attractions and restaurants was not too difficult. Our accommodations afforded a great view of the harbor and some of the beach. The pedestrian bridges offered easy access to poolside/bar and the beach. We stayed in the southern building on the internal traffic circle of the hotel complex. We have traveled extensively all over the world and in the USA and have an appreciation of what there is to experience in our own states. Fort Lauderdale is a great winter destination for active snow birds, for even we seniors who prefer to not commit to a specific location annually. George and Cathy Braun-send

Stayed one night pre-cruise. Asked for higher floor, got it. Room average, bed and linens good quality. Overlooking Marina, with partial ocean view. Lack of eateries a challenge, especially with no car. Walked about a half mile to the one restaurant close by. Breakfast in hotel is expensive, restaurant seemed dark and gloomy. Good choice is attached convenience store which sells a selection of freshly prepared breakfast foods, good coffee, and has outside tables. Hotel arranged shared transportation to cruise port.

Last week I had the displeasure of staying at the Bahia Mar while in town for a conference which was held at the hotel. There was nothing about the stay that wasn't disappointing.

My marina view "balcony" room was very basic and average size. There were two double beds and patio furniture serving as a table and chairs. There was no desk space to work at and very limited wifi (which is complimentary) that cut in and out throughout my time of using it. The bathroom was broken up with two pocket doors (one to close the sink and closet area to the room and one to separate the shower and toilet from the sink). The shower drain was very slow and I ended up taking a shower in ankle deep water most days. When I mentioned this at the front desk, they told me that's just "how it is." I put balcony in quotes because it wasn't a true balcony - there wasn't enough room to even pull half a chair out on it. However, it was nice to have the door open and allow fresh air in the room.

My room was on the 12th floor and I had to wait a minimum of 5 minutes for the elevator every time I was coming and going. Two elevators is simply not enough for a 16 floor hotel packed full of guests.

My biggest complaint was from the noise: my stay was during spring break and the entire hotel was overrun with out of control college students. Every night I was woken by slamming doors and screaming in the halls. Every night I called the front desk and they said there was only a limited amount I could do. I understand that it's spring break and that my business trip had unfortunately put me at a cheap spring break hotel, but it would have been nice if they could have done something to control the noise.

A few other things to know:
- the food options on site are very limited. There's a deli for breakfast and lunch, but be prepared to spend a decent amount of money on very limited food. There is no vending machines on-site and the hotel gift shop closes at 10pm (so you can't even get bottled water after that).
- there is self-parking and valet parking; both are expensive.
- there is a fridge and microwave in your room
- wifi is free throughout the hotel, but service in the room cut in and out. Service was fine in the lobby.
- conference facilities were awful. The staff was rude, the food was bad and the a/v was not up to par. Please don't hold your conference at this hotel!

This is not your typical DoubleTree. In fact, I wonder if DoubleTree even did an inspection before taking over the property. Bottom line: if you're looking for a place to crash while you drink on the beach, this is a great place. If you're a business traveler, or someone who needs space to work in the room and a good night sleep, this isn't your hotel.

We stayed here 3 nights traveling with another couple. I booked our trip about 6 months in advance. Our flights were late but we finally arrived around 6pm. We were given two adjoining rooms however we both requested king beds. One had two queens. Our online booking was prepaid 6 months ago so we really expected to get what we wanted. When we complained, they said they would try to move us the next day. We were tired and just stayed. The balconies were very small but the view of the marina was fine. The furnishings were a bit tired, rooms average size, bathrooms a bit outdated. For a Doubletree owned property, this hotel needs some updating. There really aren't that many restaurants within walking distance and the hotel restaurant is pricey and has a walk through going to shopping area.

Spent two nights at this hotel and was very suprise of everything this hotel offers for the price. Acces to the beach, wonderful pool, restaurant and store in the building. On the boardwalk you can walk a short distance to great restaurant, Bubba Gump is one of them, and lots of terrace facing the beach. The rooms are clean and very comfortable. We had a room with view on the marina with balcony and its worth the little extra. Also 3 minutes to the water taxi. When ready to leave for our cruise the concierge arrange shuttle for us. The staff is wonderful. We will go back for sure before our next cruise.
