“you definitely get what you pay for”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

I just returned from the Lani Kai two days and let me start off by saying I had read reviews prior so I knew what I was getting into. Having only planned this trip a month in advance and not wanting to spend $300 or $400 a night, this was pretty much the only option and honestly, I still feel we overpaid. The location was amazing, right on the beach and within walking distances to restaurants, and the staff was friendly and accomodating. Those are about the only redeeming qualities. We arrived around 10:30 on a Thursday night and had a hard time finding a parking spot due to all the people there for the restaurant and bar. I was really frustrated they didn't have reserved spots for guests of the hotel. The elevators were incredibly slow and smelled like a mixture of stale vomit, smoke and body odor. The vents in the hall were old and rusted, there were chunks of concrete falling off the walls, there was water damage on the ceiling and the furniture in the room was outdated, vinyl, and uncomfortable. The bathroom, however, seems to have been updated recently. There was only one working light bulb on the bathroom vanity and only one mirror-most hotels these days have a bathroom mirror as well as a full length one elsewhere in the room. I was a little confused by the restaurant situation, they boast the Sundecker and the Island View, but we could only find the Sundecker, where we had breakfast all 3 days. The food was surpisingly good considering, but the staff was beyond slow. Overall, one of the worst places I've ever stayed but I did know what I was walking into so it wasn't a total shock to the system.

Where should I begin? The horrific vomit smell as you enter the resort? The filthy bathrooms? Oh wait, how about the stream of bugs crawling around on the nightstand and end table? Upon noticing the bugs, we quickly lifted up the mattress to find BUG TRAPS!?! While I packed up and gathered our children, my husband spoke to the manager stating we were checking out and wanted a refund. The manager was incredibly rude and said we took too long to notice the bugs and would not refund our money. He then told my husband they were at an impasse and walked away. Horrible customer service. Horrible hotel. Horrible experience. Horrible memory of Ft. Meyers Beach.

Room Tip: Was told, after the fact, by locals to NEVER stay at the Lani Kai.

If you are looking for a sterile, predictable “cookie cutter” Holiday Inn-style hotel, the LANI KAI at Fort Myers Beach AIN’T IT!!! However, if you want a very charming, unique, medium-size (80+ rooms) Hawaiian-themed hotel-resort with beautiful Hawaiian murals and vibrant colors everywhere, inside and out, you just might love the LANI KAI as much as we do. My husband and I have spent the past several winters at the LANI KAI and would not consider any other Florida hotel.

The charm begins when you walk into the ground level breezeway with its multi-colored neon lights on its low ceiling. From here you get your first glimpse of the beach before you take the elevator up from the ground floor to the first floor registration desk.

The LANI KAI’s family-owned warmth and friendliness starts with the front desk staff and moves on to the housekeeping staff, restaurant chef and servers, bartenders, and all of the attendants on the grounds, easily recognized with “thank you for being here” printed on the back of their red T-shirts. Among other things, they will answer your questions and also help you find a place to park, either in front of the hotel or across the street. Parking is free.

If you are retirement-aged folks as my husband and I are, you might not enjoy all of the music/noise emanating from the beach bar. However, it is very easy to avoid. Simply request a room at the opposite end of the hotel. It is a very wide building because every room faces the beach.

There is another open air bar plus restaurant on the roof top adjacent to the newly opened (March 2014) Island View Restaurant. It sports a new wood burning pizza oven and a new chef imported from Chicago.

Our 2 ½ month stay included 2 weeks of the “college break” crowd. We thoroughly enjoyed all of the young people, watching some of their fun activities on the beach and we found them friendly, talkative, and respectful when we met them in the elevators and on the beach.

Everyone is on their best behavior because the hotel maintains a zero-tolerance policy against uncivil conduct. The hotel staff hands out a sheet of rules to all of the young people on their first day and the last sentence is “have a good time.”

Their expansive beach offers rental lounge chairs and umbrellas, parasails, and jet-skis. The hotel is located within walking distance of the city pier and the Times Square town center, as well as many restaurants and beach bars.

So if you are adventurous and would like the closest thing we have seen to actually being in Hawaii, check out the LANI KAI HOTEL RESORT.

Room Tip: The south end of the building is quieter.

Horrible experience. The view from the hotel is actually lovely. The remainder is horrible. Hotel itself is old and dated. Hotel not worried about being clean. Wifi is limited to lobby area only and you'd better bring your own portable device. Parking is horrific. Don't ever leave the spot, once you do they sell your spot to anyone who wants to go to the roof top bar or any bar in the area. Say it's not their problem about parking. Spring Breakers running up and down the halls yelling and screaming and banging on doors until 3am to 4am. No control. Parents DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE. No renovations were found on my trip!

Room Tip: select another hotel

First of all to the locals around ft.myers this place is known to be the worst hotel on the beach. I am younger and can party with the beat of them but even I was overwhelmed by it all for the fact I couldn't get good rest here. We stayed Friday and Saturday night and from the moment we got into the elevators I was worried. The view is great and the rooftop bar is cool but other than that, there is nothing good about this place. There were ants in our room, Saturday when we went to bed there was still sand in our sheets.Don't plan on going to bed until 2am because the music is so loud downstairs you can't and just hope you don't have any loud neighbors. I'm still waiting for my 50 dollar deposit back from them although I should have requested a full refund.

WORST HOTEL EVER! We had problems from the very start. First, upon arrival we discovered we only had electricity in half the room. A call was made to the desk and a maintenance person was sent to try and fix the problem. He was unable to fix it and we were told that they needed to come back the next day.
A day and a half later we get the electricity fixed, only to find out our toilet broke. We couldn’t flush. Another call was placed to the front desk and again a maintenance person was sent to fix the toilet. Later that same day, we had no water in the shower. Yet again, a call was placed to the desk and a person was immediately sent up. After spending an hour trying to fix the toilet, we were told that he “had bad news.” The shower couldn’t be fixed and we were going to have to move to another room.
We pack up and move to another room. Not only is the room smaller in size, there is electricity on only one wall of the room. We open the broken slider door (which we were unable to lock) only to discover that we were directly above the stage they were blasting music from. So, that being said, we were unable to open the curtains or sit on the balcony. All the spring break revelers were staring up at us, and the music was SO Loud. We also discovered that night that we were directly above the dance club that had music blasting until 2am.
The hotel rooms had no wifi and the only place to get wifi was in the hotel lobby. The restaurant was closed the week that we were there requiring us to leave the hotel each night in search of dinner. While using the wifi in the lobby, a new large screen TV was being installed. I would rather have had wifi, and electrical service than a large screen TV in the lobby, clearly misplaced values. Maybe the owners of the hotel, which we came to learn was spring break central were happy to live in the glory of their heyday, and the belief that college kids will accept substandard services, we are not. I must say that the multitudes of staff that were required to come to our room to look at or repair things were very courteous and decent and very apologetic for our substandard provisions.

We expected to have more issues with the spring breakers, however this was not the case, as most of these kids were well mannered and well behaved. As individuals who have disposable income and the penchant for travel, especially to warmer locales when it is 30 degrees at home, we will never be back to the Lani Kai hotel. If you are looking for a hotel with substandard services such as plumbing and electricity but would love to see a large TV suspended from the rafters when you check in, well this is your kind of place. If you would like to turn on a lamp, plug in your phone, flush the toilet and have water to shower, and not be concerned that the electrical problems will eventually lead to a fire then I would suggest another accommodations that go above and beyond to please their guests. We actually had to ask the maid to sweep the room as there was so much sand in the room, it didn't appear the room was swept before we checked in.

After hearing the horror stories of this place, I was skeptical, but I was curious to see what it was like and I couldn't beat the price for an ocean front room. I was very happy with my stay here. The room had clearly been renovated since past reviews because everything was very clean and modern-tile floors, new bathroom, and a flat screen TV. The view is spectacular and the rooms are priced very fairly. I was also worried about the noise, and although it was certainly loud, it did not shake the room or make the TV inaudible-and we were in a room on the North side, and was shut down by 2AM, leaving plenty of time to sleep. My only complaint about this hotel (other than the slow elevators) would be that the door did not fit the frame tightly, and though there were no open spaces, it could be a security concern (we did not have any problems). This place does get a bit rowdy, especially during spring break, so if you are looking for a quiet place to relax, you'll need to look elsewhere. If you want a clean, spacious, and comfortable room right on the beach, where the action is, this is your place! I will definitely be staying again.
