Came to do some scalloping, and wanted to be on the river. The hotel is not fancy, at all. But it was clean, and our riverfront room did have a great view of the river. It is an old hotel, but we just need the basics. We were initially concerned because we were next to the bar/restaurant & thought it might be noisy, but we had no trouble with that. The walls are a little thin, but not horribly so. The fridge ran kind of loud and the a/c unit gurgled & rumbled a lot. But we didn't hear our neighbors too much, and they had kids with them too. The hotel has wifi, but an earlier storm knocked it off the server, so it was difficult to look at the weather reports or find someplace to eat. Also, if you are facing the river, it's difficult to pick up the network. Oh well, we dealt with it fine. The restaurant next door (owned & operated by same people) was pretty expensive, and we heard people waited an hour for their food, so we didn't eat there. Staff was nice, and accommodating! Nice central location on the river; not too far from ocean or the springs. We would stay here again.
NOTE: You have to reserve a boat slip at the time of your reservation! You can't do it online, so call the office to do so. And you'll be charged an extra $10/day for "ramp use." Luckily, one (poorly located) slip became available for us the morning after we checked in.

My husband & I stayed at this hotel for out anniversary getaway on the weekend of the 4th of July. The room was clean the grounds nice, the potential for activities was good. Within the first 4 hours of our stay we found out that the neighboring room could everything we did & said. We were not being loud or obnoxious, we were however spending "quality time together" when we heard the neighboring room tenants beating against our walls. I was mortified. after that we realized we could there conversations word for word, talking on cell phones or to each other. My husband was kept up the majority of the first night by someone else's snoring!! The walls are THAT thin!!! It was incredibly uncomfortable, I didn't want to be in the room the majoirty of the time & certainly not on our balcony separated from our rude neighbors by only a short wooden railing. The veiws of the river were awesome! The restaurant was good! Our airboat ride was awesome & the monkey island was certainly neat, but these walls were just too thin for comfort. Also while we were there the bulding next to us lost all hot water and were denying the customers refunds. Just a heads-up. Come to the grounds for a visit a boat ride & nice meal, go sleep somewhere else!!

After reading some of the reviews I was not sure what to expect from this place but everything we experianced was very good here. The room was clean and comfortable. It is an older hotel but our room was quite nice and perfect for our little get away. The pool was very refreshing and relaxing and had a great view of the river. The only knocks I would have is that the AC was loud when it kicked on but you do get used to it. The walls where also very thin and you could hear alot of what was going on outside (Vehicles, boats people talking etc..). It was not to bad and we were up and out the door early every morning anyway. The restaurant was great for drinks and appetizers at the end of the day. The dinner was not bad either and it is an easy walk to it or you can head down to Macraes for some good food, drinks and live music as well. The place was perfect for a get away in old Florida. Close to springs and easy acess to the river by boat or kayak.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the river and on the 2nd or third floor. The view is great.

Spent a Friday night here. We were in Villa 2, second floor. Our room wasnt ready when we arrived at 1pm, so we took the kids to the pool. A couple middle age guys came into the pool area and snuck a cooler in over the fence. A bit later a couple more guys joined them and then a couple more. This continued till the evening with approx 12 in their group. By the time we went to bed they were noisy and rowdy. They kept it up well past midnight. Management appeared oblivious. We tried to have dinner on the deck but were told or kids were not allowed. There was black mold in the tub. Rest of the room was clean. Would not recommend. Will not go back.
If you want to see the monkeys, anyone can walk up the dock to see them. If we had known this, we could have saved some money.

We stayed here for a quick weekend trip with my kids (ages 8 and 10). We stayed upstairs in Villa III. Rooms are definitely in need of updating... however they seemed fairly clean other than the black mold in the shower tiles. The AC may a huge noise every time it cycled on and off at night which made for a horrible nights sleep. We asked to be away from the bar, but even with our noisemaker and the AC fan running, it was still pretty loud. Other than the restaurant, pool and canoeing there isn't much to do for kids without driving somewhere (unless I just didn't venture in the right direction).

The pool is great and it's updated. The kids spent a couple hours there overall. We ate at the onsite restaurant which overlooks Monkey Island, loved that part. We also rented the onsite canoe for $15/hour, which was a great deal and a great way to get up close to Monkey Island.

We probably would stay again, but I would upgrade to the refurbished condo style units. This would be a great "home base" if you were going to do all the things the river offers.

Room Tip: Ask for room away from bar unless you plan on staying up until the music stops.

The mattress in our room was the worst we had ever slept on. Ridge in the middle sloping down on both sides. We loved playing trivia in the bar and the food was okay, but the bed made the visit unpleasant. Also, only hotel on our trip without a hair dryer.

Room Tip: I think some of the rooms have been updated, just not the one we had.

This was my second stay at HRR. The first time was eight years ago and I was afraid it would have changed but we found it to be in wonderful condition with some updates and improvements that did not change the character. Old Florida at it's best. We had Suite 212, a two-bedroom, two-bath upstairs riverfront unit with a full kitchen and large living area, plus spacious outdoor deck overlooking the pool and the river. Extremely clean and well equipped. Weather turned iffy but we were able to take a pontoon boat river cruise for $18 with an informative and friendly guide, where we saw bald eagles, numerous wading birds, and of course manatees. The tour went upriver to the headsprings of the river, located just outside the Homasassa River nature park, which is a destination all its own. Gorgeous tropical trees and flowering plants, clear springs filled with fish of all kinds as well as manatees, shady wooden boardwalks all through the park which comprised numerous indigenous animals in native habitats. Better than any zoo! One member of our party is a wildlife photographer and he got awesome pics on this outing, also took a hike into the nearby salt marsh. In good weather there is kayaking, boating, fishing, and other water sports right outside your door. The scenery is lovely, the gulf is about 4 miles downriver, there is a public boat launch just yards from the resort and you can tie up to the resort docks. Good restaurant and bar on-site. We had a few issues that were satisfactorily resolved: hot water heater went out and was promptly prepared, and our downstairs neighbors became a bit rowdy as they partied into the night only a few feet from our bedroom window. A compromise had to be made here *(this was the second night, Thursday before Easter. On Wednesday night all was peaceful and relaxing, wonderful to sit out on the deck and watch the river roll by.) Nearby is an artisan's shop with beautiful pottery, glasswork and art for sale as the artists produce new inventory in the adjoining studio. Colorful, picturesque, totally charming and the art on offer was appealing and reasonably priced. Close to Crystal River, Rainbow River and numerous other inland Florida activities; Would love to go back soon without an agenda, just to relax! I give it an excellent rating - however, be advised there is no "room service" per se. I gave high marks to the housekeeping, generous supply of towels and other necessities, comfortable bedding and other nice touches. There is no spa. There is a nice pool with ample lounge chairs on a deck overlooking the river. Grounds are well manicured, beautiful green grass and landscaping, palms and mossy oaks, the views across the river are lovely and the place abounds with character.

Room Tip: Have heard that the single rooms are not desirable. They are located away from the river and appear...
