Caution: There are many ‘welcome centers’ and ‘visitor centers’ that are fronts for tour companies of dubious integrity. The OFFICIAL Visitor Center at 10 West Castillo Drive, and City of St. Augustine share a website, www.staugustinegovernment.com (904/825-1000). The VC parking garage is free for the first hour, which gives time to get maps and site brochures. There are two recognized tour companies at the VC that sell package tickets to main sites, Old Town Trolley and Ripley’s Trolley. Both offer discounts for disabled and elderly persons, but only if you ask. Since the latter is owned by the original Ripley’s Believe it or Not—a wax museum and house of oddities—the tour package ticket includes admission at a seriously discounted price. Both authorized trolley companies include free transportation amongst historic sites/museums for 3 days in package tickets, and offer free parking at their terminals within sight of the Visitor Center. Visitor Center staff are friendly, knowledgeable and provide information not contained in tourism brochures.

Recommendation: Leave a gallon of water, granola bars, fruit, and nuts in your car to save money at pricey tourist-town restaurants. With purchase of site admission packages, free trolleys to the trolley parking lots (and restrooms) stretch the travel budget, or take a picnic lunch to any of the wonderful parks. I enjoyed lunch at the waterfront battery adjacent to the fort, Castillo de San Marcos, which is a short walk from the parking lots at Ripley’s and Old Town Trolley.

Hotel advice: Use TripAdvisor or other online discount booking site to reserve a 3-star or better hotel near Interstate 95, about 7 miles away. Hotels in the Historic District are older and lack amenities some prefer--at double the price. The 15-minute drive from a newer hotel is well worth the savings.

We took a tour of the island, but it was not in the tram that tours the island. We took an air conditioned/heated bus, and it is run by a very knowledgeable and delightful man. It is only $10, but you need to tip him. He's funny and gives you more information that you really want to know. It was wonderful. Don't use the tram. I don't remember the name of the company nor his name.
