“We will be back”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012

We were here four nights for a business trip before headin to the Bahamas. I wish we would have stayed here therest of our trip. From the moment we walked in and were handed a glass of champagne, the service was great.

At check in, we were able to upgrade to an ocean view suite. The room was large, with a nice bathroom, and most importantly, very clean.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There are two pools, one for families and one for adults only (very nice since there are a ton of kids here). There is a nice stretch beach with drink service. It is nice that it is not crowded in with other hotels so you are not crowded on the beach. The only complaint here is a $20 per day charge for an umbrella or $50 per day for a two person beach lounge. Really? At least they don't charge for the chairs.

As one of us was there for meetings, we did not have a car and we're somewhat captive. There are a few different resterants and the food was good at all of them. We also had room service and the food was quick and hot. That said, it is a resort and food and drinks do add up quickly, so if possible, plan ahead and bring or stop and pick up snacks, water, and beverages.

My only complaint was the addition of 18% gratuity to everything. While service in the resteraunt swaps for the most part good, it was not great. Generally speaking, in the US when gratuity is added, service goes down. I also don't like that it was added when a grab a bottle of wine at thebarto bring to my room. I tip when I do that, but not 18%. Yes they say that you can change it, but I travel enough to know that when you stay at one place for several days, you don't want to upset anyone.

If it wasn't for the automatic gratuity and not so stellar service at the resteraunts, this would be 5 stars. We will be back.

Room Tip: Go fo ocean view.

Confortable beds, right room size - it was the standard! And bathroom ok.
High quality towels, linen and pillow.

The meals and beverages are quite expensive, in line with hotel expectations.

The concierge was always amazing! Very helpful, with good suggestions for restaurants, car rental and sightseeing around the hotel.

Cons: It's far from Miami beach and with a toll on the way. Nothing impossible but good to be aware.
Pros: It's really close to a very charming lighthouse. Rent a bike outside the hotel - in the blue mall - and enjoy the ride and the view!
Order just one continental breakfast in your room and enjoy for two!

I just returned from this property today. I spent Thursday through Monday at the hotel. If you have the money to spend, you will not get better service or a nicer hotel any place. I have visited nice hotels all across the USA from the Venetian in Las Vegas to the Belage in Los Angeles to the Waldorf Estoria in New York. The service compares to not other place. It is amazing.

I highly recommend the club level if you can afford it. Having food and drinks available at no cost will cut down the price of your vacation substantially as breakfasts can run over $30 per person.

The views are gorgeous. The beach area is beautiful - although the beach is not very wide. Again, the best reason to go here is the service. The staff is amazing.

Room Tip: We were on the 9th floor in the middle of the hotel. Definitely worth getting an ocean view room.

The staff anticipate your every need making your stay seamless and faultless. The pools and bedrooms are so luxurious and the food in all of the restaurants is superb. It's like being on a carribean island as the beach is white powder sand and you can walk for miles yet you have all the bustle that Miami has to offer 15 minutes away. Alper at the front desk has got get 10 out of 10 for everything he managed to do for us

This is our second trip to the Ritz on Key Biscayne. We were there April 10-17. It was during spring break and we had our 3 kids...5,7,and 12. I booked our stay over the phone as the resort was pretty booked solid for spring break. I had to take what rooms were left over and the staff was very accomidating. We needed two connecting rooms, one for the kids and one for the grown-ups. When we arrived we were givin adjoining rooms...no problem they fixed it for us right away. The hotel staff were exempelory. A special TY to Baris and Nivy! The food was wonderful, service was teriffic, beach and pool well kept and clean, room service on-time...Whatever we asked for, the response was "My pleasure.." If I have to make a recommendation to the hotel it would be to have two omelet chefs at the breakfast buffet when it is busy. I stopped using the buffet because of the lines at the omelet station, in fact my breakfast ordered from the menu arrived before my family returned from the buffet. Once the place emptied out this was not an issue. One of the aspects of this resort I love is that its literally 15 minutes from Miami and you would never know it. There is lots to do if you want to leave the island.
We will be back.

A few tips:
- I read some of the other reviews of this resort, some of the comments relate to cost and disappointment. The Ritz is expensive, if you really cant afford it, or dont want to spend the $$$$ stay somewhere else, you wont enjoy yourself if you constantly are worried about the cost of everything. You will enjoy yourself if you remember why you are there.
- Plan your arrival late in the afternoon if it is a busy time of the year..If the hotel is booked chances are your room(s) wont be ready in the morning (check-in time is 4pm), otherwise pack your carry-on with your bathing suit so you can enjoy the beach or pool while your room is prepared. I saw lots of folks sitting around in their jeans in 86 degree weather waiting for their rooms, they didnt look too happy...its happened to me and is a major bust if traveling with kids.
- Adjoining rooms don't connect, they are just next to eachother. I have to admit I have never encounterd this distinction before. With little kids you need connecting rooms if you can't get a suite.
-This is a great family resort, there is also a kid free zone if you need get away.
-Yes there is a Starbucks on the island.

Recently returned from the Ritz-Carlton/Key Biscayne - 5 night stay, family of four. Booked reservation weeks in advance specifically requesting a LOW floor and adjoining rooms. Upon arrival was escorted to totally separate rooms on the 5th floor. To many, 5th floor may seem low enough, but bear in mind the floors sit atop a grand lobby, so for all intents and purposes one could reasonably say the the 5th floor sits quite high. Gabriel (our very friendly porter) made a quick call and was able to get adjoining rooms, however we were stuck on the 5th floor. Our children had their own room and I did think and worry about them on the balcony. Due to the fact that Key Biscayne is a residential enclave, there is a Winn Dixie, CVS and Starbucks all within walking distance. I made it a priority each day to go off site to stock up on snacks, beverages and morning coffee. American drip coffee in the hotel is just over $5.00 with added gratuity. The service in Cantina (pool-side Mexican restaurant) was horrible maybe because gratuity is included they don't strive for excellent service. Lunch for 3 was a $72.00 affair including the $11.00 "added gratuity". Our 2nd attempt at lunch we actually walked out because the service was ridiculously slow. The tipping culture is a real drag. How refreshing it would be to find a hotel where tipping is discouraged, or a fair way to reward those who demonstrated exceptional service at the very end. I am not cheap, but no one walks around with a fistful of dollars handing out money left and right all day long. It's awkward and a real pain! People like value for money, so if you must charge $5.00 for one cup of American drip coffee, at least offer free refills all morning! By the way, baskets of TASTELESS red/green apples are availablle throughout the property. If they would make food/services more affordable they would do better on volume. Many families seemed to go out of their way to avoid eating breakfast/lunch at the hotel by going off site or keeping small items like fruit and yogurt in the room. Beautiful hotel, lovely location, the family pool is rather small and need of rennovation, lots of seaweed on the beach and in the water, friendly staff, food, drink and sundries VERY expensive! We did have to relinquish our rooms at 11:00 on our day of departure but they did allow us to use a room elsewhere for showering - that was nice. Not to go too much off topic but if your rental car includes the "automatic toll pass" it does NOT work at the toll booth on the Rickenbacker Causeway and if you don't stop to pay the $1.50 toll you will incur a $100 fine!

Room Tip: The 5th floor is very high and would be problemtaic for persons with a fear of heights and small kid...

We visited this property 4/4/12 - 4/9/12. The hotel property and views overlooking the ocean and pool are breathtaking! We regularly travel to high end properties and I have to say this one is definitely priced to keep people out. A basic mixed drink at the bar is $15, and beware if you use the coffee in your room, you will be charged $4. We passed on the Easter brunch $95 + tax and tip for adults; $40 for kids - hard to justify that for breakfast. There is a Winn Dixie across the way and we had bought some cereal, fruit, and light fare for $60 for the time we were there. The price of things seemed excessive and not like you were getting something amazing. It it were "amazing", I'd be happy to pay.

We are attempting to travel lightly (meaning no purse/wallet) through the resort to the pools, etc... and we felt like we were letting the staff down with the excessive tipping culture because we do not have cash on our person. We saw a lobby staffer get a tip for opening a door...lol! Let's get serious people!!

Another example is in the very lame game room which was a basic room converted to an arcade. More than 1/2 of the games did not work (basic stuff: guitar hero, air hockey, etc...) and the tokens were $1 per play. We have stayed at other Marriott properties with great gaming rooms for kids that charged 25 cents per play. As a platinum elite member, we often receive vouchers for tokens and don't pay anything at all.

The dining there was excellent - a Mexican restaurant with fresh guacamole made at your table (outstanding) and the Dune restaurant was also excellent. The pool side menu was very convenient and not horribly priced.

There were several children and family activities that were planned, but poorly executed. For example, there is a very cool grassy area on the east side of the property that kids play soccer, throw balls around, etc... One day it was posted that a flag football game was going to take place, yet never did and the staff was shrugging their shoulders about who was in charge.

They also attempted to organize an Easter egg hunt, however, the eggs were never hidden and the staff is running around "hiding" them while dozens of children are standing there in front of them waiting for the activity to begin. Again, execution was poor.

The fitness center facilities were clean and adequate, however, the gym towels had an overpowering smell of vinegar. Do these rags clean the floor and then make the way to the gym shelf? Odd...

We didn't feel any "special" treatment with my husband's travel classification and he travels 48 weeks out of the year, and stays primarily at Marriott's. That being said, we started to feel the room was coming in on us because we only had the basic room (2 double beds).

Overall, nice beautiful property but...

Room Tip: Choose ocean side rooms, absolutely breathtaking!!! We visited this property 4/4/12 - 4/9/12. The h...
