“A great discover scuba instructor for my teenaged children!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2014

We just came back from Key Largo where our primary purpose was to do our open water certification. We brought our kids along--ages 19 and 16 and signed them up for the Discover Scuba program. Elizabeth Wright (a.k.a. Biff) instructed our kids. I can't say enough about this fine young instructor. She is warm and patient and was able to teach my kids a great deal in a short time. They learned several skills, including neutral buoyancy and they LOVED it! They are asking to go back and we will definitely ask for Biff to instruct them for their certification. Can't thank her and a Ocean Divers enough for the kids' great experience!

“Great Dive Operation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

Went to Ocean Divers largely because is was right across the canal from my hotel. Went there with my dive instructor (she had used them before) to do my Advanced Open Water Certification. Did 5 dives with them and was very happy with the shop, the crew and the ships. Each crewmember was informative and helpful. They have a storage cage where you can hang your BCD and keep the rest of your gear if you want. I am a retired Air Force officer; ask them and they will give you 10% off. I'd go there again.

“Back Again for Annual June/July Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

Once again I had a fantastic experience diving with OD. Since last April they have added an additional boat. This one is faster than the other boats and now really does add a lot of options. I believe they will be expanding some of the dive sites as well as doing double dips on some of the wrecks. The drift diving outside the shallow reefs is something I will recommend. Plan on returning for my fall trip late Oct early November.

“Has become our default operator for Key Largo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

We've used Ocean Divers about 5 times over the past dozen years, logging about 45 dives with them. We have found them to be one of the best operators in the Upper Keys. They do a good job of providing thorough dive briefings and they’re safety-conscious. The captains and the crew take pride in their work, and they try to put divers in the water where the conditions are best. They’re kind of a "no frills" operation for divers who just want to dive and aren't overly concerned about being pampered, and that’s just fine with us. They’ll certainly help you with any questions or in the event you have equipment problems - but they don’t try to baby you by changing your tanks between dives or carrying your gear to the boat, etc.

We also like that they follow the charter schedule on their website – unless conditions dictate otherwise – which makes it easy for you to plan a variety of dives on the shallow reefs or the deeper wrecks. The boats leave on time, and since their dock is on the ocean side of Key Largo (as opposed to bay side) they can get out to the dive sites fairly quickly. They visit just about all the well-known dive sites around Key Largo. If you’re not certified to an advanced level you will need to show a logged dive of at least 80’ within the past 12 months to get on an advanced trip; this policy is strictly enforced.

They recently added another boat, which gives them 3 first-class custom Newton dive boats. They are USCG-certified vessels and there is O2 on board, AED, VHF radio, etc. There are fresh-water showers on board, a marine head, and separate rinse buckets for cameras and masks. There’s plenty of drinking water; oranges and pretzels are the snacks served after dives. A large cooler is available for anything you want to bring for yourself. Ladders are the fins-off type.

The biggest negative on our last visit was a Saturday afternoon trip that was loaded with 30 passengers, plus the crew. Although the boats are big, they’ll comfortably accommodate 24-26 divers. Any more than that and it feels like a cattle call. We haven’t used their rental gear so we can’t comment on it.

- They don’t impose time limits on dives and allow divers to manage their own dive profiles
- Provide thorough dive briefings
- Great schedule, wide variety of sites to visit, and the boats leave on time
- Large gear locker on site for storing gear and allowing it to dry overnight
- Large, spacious and well-maintained boats designed for diving, not multi-purpose type boats
- Experienced & professional crews that know their business

- Overloaded a trip with 30 passengers, including 3 snorkelers, making for a cattle call
- If booking multiple days, make sure you check in advance how many customers are on the manifest and which reef the boat is scheduled for, or you may end up on a training dive
- They’re a little bit more expensive than others in Key Largo, but still competitive
