“A Tale of Two Stays”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

We were making a trip from Cocoa Beach to Key West and wanted a place to stay on Sunday night (8/3), got to the hotel around 6 pm and checked in. We knew immediately there was a mosquito problem, as my wife and two daughters were attacked taking our bags to our 2nd floor room. Our room (204) was okay, but there was only a view of trees from the balcony, which was not inviting...also, there were a million mosquitoes out there, so there was not going to be any balcony time anyway. I went down to the gift shop and got the 2nd last bottle of mosquito spray...the last bottle was purchased by the couple behind me. The gift shop girl recommended a place called Snappers to eat, and we did wind up going there...a really nice place. Since we couldn't enjoy the resort because of all the mosquitos, we wound up staying in our room. However, having written all about the mosquitoes, I don't know what else the resort could have done, they were trying to dry out the puddles and they were fogging them. Being on the 2nd floor, naturally there were rooms above and below us. Every time the balcony doors opened (which was unfortunately very frequently), it sounded like a thunderstorm in our room. This was really annoying, but I didn't say anything. We left early the next morning to go to the John Pennekamp National Park for the 9 am glass bottom boat ride. We then drove down to Key West for two nights. I would rate this stay a 2 or 3.

While in Key West I tried to extend my stay at the DoubleTree by a night, but the hotel was sold out, so we decided to come back to the Key Largo Hilton and give the resort another chance...and this time they didn't disappoint. On Wednesday (8/6) we got the room upgrade I was expecting the first time which overlooked the water and beach (room 449), what a difference. The resort was dry without the puddles of water everywhere, and although there were a few mosquitoes around, 99% of the problem from Sunday was resolved. We got a late check out on Thursday, my daughters got to enjoy the beach and pool, and we were able to relax and enjoy a nice breakfast at the Treetops restaurant. This stay would have been a 5 star, no doubt. Assuming my second experience is more the norm, I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: You need to be on the 4th floor to get a water view, the trees are too high.

Last week 3 friends and I decided we needed a "girls' fun" trip getaway. We all work in a school together and thought we needed some team bonding before going back to work. We called it the last "Hoorah!" All 4 of us are hard working and very devoted to our kids. This trip meant a lot to us. We were willing to spend a little extra to stay at a nice place. We were NOT disappointed! We had so much fun and comfort! The grounds and buildings were beautiful and well maintained. We had rooms on the bayside. Delightful balconies and views. Even in the tree tops. Our rooms were lovely decorated and clean. The pools were lovely. The beaches were pretty and well groomed. Every person working the property was very polite, prompt and helpful. The property's landscaped kept the outside world from us. That was an escape to us! Loved the water sports available. We came and went so pleased! Thanks so much! We shall return and recommend!

Room Tip: Bayside. Any level.

We stayed here recently and enjoyed it. The resort is large and offers a lovely but small beach area and two pools, one for adults and one for children. Some spa services, activities for children, and water sport options also are available but we didn’t use them. Our room was spacious and best of all was the fabulous water view from our balcony. The facilities are large, airy and rather impersonal but my feeling is it would be an especially good family getaway or gathering spot for a large family.

key largo is sort of a dump in general.. if you want to go there, this place is a good option ...service was great ... breakfast was very good... rooms were pretty decent (the suites is really nice).. the "beach" is relaxing ..but it is not a beach like u would expect ...not much sand ... it is like u are on a rock in the middle of the ocean ... but, that is key largo....calm water, no waves, hamocks, enough free chairs...tiki bar ...reasonable food and drink prices... the location is good for key largo but u cant walk to anything anywhere in key largo ... saw some families but it was not over run with kids .. jet ski, floats, paddle boards available for rent right at the beach for a good price ... had a good time, but i would not rush back to key largo in general... one cool thing, the water is so salty u can actually float without paddling ur arms and legs ,...try it

Room Tip: if u can afford the suite, go for it

After a great time in Orlando then Miami we were pleasantly suprised at the cleanliness and general feel of the hotel after all the poor reviews,it does however have the feel of a commune and didn't bother with the restaurants here as there was no ambience whatsoever -all the staff were helpful though but not somewhere you would go for anything other than family stuff, they would benefit from more of an atmosphere we were expecting a beach bar at night but headed to the local tiki bars instead which seemed to be cashing in nicely -they could learn a thing or two from snooks just up the road overall good but not sure if recommend

We like the Hilton chain and have gone back to this hotel several times now. It is right on the ocean and has a good pool "water park" feel. The room was the right size and comfy. The restaurant was a bit pricey but good tasting. We look for pet friendly hotels but do not smell and this one fits the bill!
