“There is nothing as good as the Kona Kai!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2009

My husband and I have stayed at the Kona Kai at least 6 times over the past 4 years. We used to stay in other places in the Keys, but nothing compares. The staff (Bobbi and Tracie,as well as Veronika) are terrific. They make us feel like family. We always stay in the Pineapple Suite. My husband scubas every day, and I exercize in the Key Largo park (where the Olympic size pool is located), and it is heaven on earth. We are already booked for November, and when we go in November, we will book for the following February!

Stayed for our honeymoon in June, beautiful grounds were quite private. We stayed in the breadfruit room which had a great view of the water, easy access to the beach, hammock, pool and jacuzzi. We had plenty of space in our room, the bed was comfy and the temperature was nice inside when getting out of the heat and humidity. There were kayaks and paddle boats available to guests, our first night there we took the kayak out and saw a small shark and saw many other tropical fish on our daily kayak trips. There were many tiny lizards (not sure of the type) running around and there was also a friendly squirrel which was used to being fed by people, and would eat right out of your hand. Overall I would definitely go back someday and would recommend this resort for a romantic trip. Every guest who stayed during the time we were there had gone on their honeymoon, and revisited often.

My husband and I were searching for the perfect place to stay for our stay in the Keys. We researched for a month to finally decide on the Kona Kai and we were not disappointed. In fact, we ended up being quite delighted with our stay. We had spent quite a bit of time planning out the things we wanted to do prior to leaving home. Thankfully, we hadn't made our reservations for any of it prior to leaving. When we arrived, Bobbi spent the first hour with us learning about what we were planning to do, she got a good idea of what was interesting to us. She gave us advice, based on the winds, that readjusted our plan of events we were initially planning. We still did everything we wanted to do, but on better days based on water and weather conditions. I'm convinced that our trip was improved just because of that time she spent with us. She made all of our reservations for us and all we had to do all week was show up. It was a "Life of the Rich and Famous" trip and we are neither rich nor famous. She also turned us on to a very very special activity that we had not found online. It ended up being "the pearl" for us. It was the most precious 4 hours my husband and I have spent since we were married. We stayed in the Mango Room. We were very comfortable and had plenty of space. The room suited us well over the suite because we were not planning on spending alot of our time at the resort, although I can see if you wanted to do that, you'd still be quite pleased. The special touches like top of the line toiletries and the complementary items were awesome. The gals who take care of the rooms and the grounds were friendly and interacted with us and some of the other guests which was special. If you are interested in your trip to the keys being personalized and memorable, it would be worthwhile to know what you want to do and start here with Kona Kai to help you arrange the rest.

We stayed at Kona Kai for one night during our road tour of the Keys in March. We hadn't booked - just stopped in early evening to see if they had a room available, and happily they did as it was the best of all the places we stayed in the Keys. To start with, the lady at reception was fantastic - really helpful and kind (and was keeping the office open late to wait for one of the guest's pizza to arrive). The room we stayed in was large and clean - for my taste would have been perfect if they could change the furniture and get rid of the fake pine. But the bed was fantastically comfortable and the bathroom was good. The pool and beach and the other public areas are really well maintained with some great decorative touches, and the canoes and peddle boat are a real bonus for watching the sunset. Yes, there is a little noise from the road - but much less than anywhere else we stayed in the Keys and we slept with the windows open - so it really wasn't that much of a problem. Overall, though I thought the Keys over-rated and wouldn't want to spend any more time there, if I were going to go, I would stay at Kona Kai.

Don't let the pictures fool you. The Kona Kai website makes it seem as if the place was a secluded sanctuary. It is but only if you wear blinders and earplugs. The property was tightly wedged between two other vacation properties. The cottages at Kona Kai were nice although some of the decor were out of place (dining room light fixture, cheap wardrobe in bedroom...). Certainly it was not worth the rates they demand. We woke up every morning to the chatter of guests at the property next door not to mention their car alarms and ignitions, and the endless vroom vroom of their motorcycles which were right outside our cottage window. This seemed to go on all day and into the evening. In fact, it would be difficult to find any peace and quiet all cottages outline the neighboring motels and are on KK pedestrian pathways so people are always walking by. Given the entire picture, I thought the place was extremely overpriced; I would not recommend it and have dissuaded several colleagues from staying there. We even cut our stay short since R&R was out of the question.

“MsDove” and her [former] boyfriend had a lovers spat here at Kona Kai in November and terminated their reservation early. “MsDove” wanted a refund – none was forthcoming and this review is the result. Need we say more. . . ?

There is no question that this is a gorgeous and unique property - I am pretty sure there is nothing like it in Key Largo. We used almost everything - the kayak, the hammock, the pool, the ping-pong table, even the tennis courts. We definitely had a blast and enjoyed our time even though we were there only for one night. True, there is no restaurant on the property, but many are nearby, as well as a huge grocery store, which we used to stock the fridge with water, buy breakfast bars, and a bottle of wine, which we consumed while watching the sunset - resulting in photos similar to the ones on their website - absolutely gorgeous!

The only caveat: we were given the Guava room, which was wonderfully appointed and spotless. The only problem with the room was that it backs up to what I suppose was the maid's closet - so we were awakened at around 7 am to clanging and loud rustling around behind our heads. A noise machine may have remedied this, and we had to get up shortly after anyway. Then the sweeping began on the sidewalk outside our room, which seemed terrifically loud and as though it went on and on. Again, though, a noise machine and you probably wouldn't hear it. Overall it was a wonderful stay and I would stay there again, but with a noise machine.

  • Liked — The gorgeous grounds and ways to relax and play
  • Disliked — the noise in the morning based on room location

The Keys! I could not believe my boyfriend wanted to stay local since we live in Fort Lauderdale...we had not had a vacation in over a year and here we were. I had one month to book and find a luxurious, secluded spot in the Florida Keys.

It took me three weeks and many hours of browsing until I discovered the Kona Kai Resort. The moment we found it on the web we knew...I know we sound "corny" but let me tell you about the "Experience".

If you like attention to detail this is the place for you. If you like privacy...perfect.

We stayed for one week and felt as if we had the place to ourselves. Of course there were other couples, yet we felt so isolated.

The grounds were kept beautifully. The landscaping was constantly tended to. Even the lovely beach sand was "manicured".

We encountered local wildlife as well. Although we had a kitchen and dining room in our suite, we ate at the Tiki hut and watched the local creatures We encountered Dolphin twice, a manatee once and of course, the resident squirrels that loved to steal our nuts! There is also "Max" the gorgeous pup that belongs to the owners. He loves FOOD and people!

Accomodations were lovely...TV, DVD, CD players in rooms. There were also outdoor grills and a lovely Tennis court. The employees at Kona Kai were thoughtful and detail oriented. Anything my Fiance and I needed we were provided.

The pool was heated to the perfect temp. Towels were provided for the outdoor areas. Hammocks were amazing. Ping pong was fun if you could peel yourself from the hammocks.

If you feel like fishing...well, get on the kayaks and borrow a fishing pole. If you don't feel like that, try snorkeling. Swim by their floating dock...you migh see the resident parrot fish! He's huge!!!

The suite was perfect and we were within several mile markers of many attractions.

Spend the extra $ to have a wonderful and luxurious experience. We did and we are very greatful to have met the lovely people at the Kona Kai.

Before I forget... the sunsets viewed at Kona Kai were the most beautiful! Robi and I can not wait to go back.

  • Liked — Location and attention to detail. No KIDS!
  • Disliked — Nothing.
