“The real Key Largo”
Reviewed 16 May 2013 via mobile

Staying at the Tarpon flats is interesting as you are off the main drag and its more of an insite into real key living as you are basically in a residential area. The hotel is great in it has a pool and is bay side with kayaks ready to use. The room is large and in decent condition if a little dated but this doesn't make this a bad place. The welcome pack was a great help even thought we are big trip advisor users.

We loved this place. Arrived to find a manatee in the dock just outside our front door and it just got better!!
Peaceful, tranquil, beautiful...what more could you ask for? The beach area was perfect. We sat and watched the sun come up and go down out there overlooking Largo Sound. The people who live round about on boats were so welcoming and friendly and Gilda and Rose were helpful and gave us tips on where to eat (not that we left the property very often).
The rooms are large and clean. They have everything you need. If you're looking for the Holiday Inn, this probably isn't for you. If you're looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful location then take your time and find the Tarpon Flats Inn....if only we could have stayed longer:-(((

Not a hotel or your standard motel. More like bed and breakfast but without breakfast. Booked through Expedia which includes continental breakfast but was told by owner Gilda that this is not correct and for us to call Expedia ourselves. Quite disappointing as it doesn't take much to put on a simple continental breakfast, even if it is some cereal boxes and milk in the lodging. We booked it around wifi and free continental breakfast as there's so many others around here to choose from with these offers. Room is self-contained with kitchen facilities and a mini lounge room. Only 4 rooms to this homestyle approved lodging. Right on water’s edge of a small marina, lovely quiet spot but no beach access. Really need a car to get here and to get around. Not possible on foot to walk anywhere or by public transport hence not convenient for all international tourists unless you hire a car. Free high speed wifi. Quite a task looking for this place, had to ask 2 locals for assistance. Bed comfy but pillows aren’t. Teeny tiny bathroom. Only 1 towel hung out when booking was for 2. They have kayaks and bikes for use. Away from everything so if this is what you want, then great.

We hired a standard car with National on arrival at airport. Got instructions on how to get out of airport to head south from car company. Really easy and clear. Drove to Key Largo to rest for the night before heading to Key West the next day. This lodging is on MM (mile marker) 102.5 which is 102.5 miles from Key West. Suggest you get directions from them before heading out there.

TarponFlatsManager, Manager at Tarpon Flats Inn, responded to this review, 15 April 2013
First we would like to thank you for taking the time to write a review. We apologize for the erroneous information concerning a continental breakfast. We understand your disappointment; we have been informed by Expedia this information has been corrected. The manager asked you to call Expedia as we had already informed them the information concerning a continental breakfast needed corrected. We would like to take this opportunity to state we are an “Inn” not a bed and breakfast. To our knowledge Tarpon Flats has not served a continental breakfast for many years. The new owners are working on improvements at the inn. We appreciate the input of our guests. We are located at Mile Marker 103.2 on the Oceanside. We wished you had stayed more than one night. Key Largo is a small town and it is easy to find your way around. We are off the beaten path but are within walking or biking distance to many area restaurants. We are a quarter of a mile north of Pennykamp Park.

We used Tarpon as a stopover on our way to the Everglades. We soon wished we were staying for longer. The setting is beautiful and Rose showed us to our second floor room with an amazing view across the sound. She gave us a quick tour showing us the bikes and kayaks and left us to enjoy the surroundings. We spent a very pleasant afternoon cycling then sat watching the sun go down with a glass of wine. Determined not to miss anything we got up to watch the sun come up the next day. The gentleman (sorry don't think we got your name but he has lived on a boat there for 10 years) showed us where dolphins are seen in the morning. About 10 mins later they appeared. The property is old but it is spotless and the setting of Tarpon Flats and the friendliness of Rose Gilda and the other residents of this community outweigh everything. There will be a next time and it will be for longer.

Tarpon Flats is right on the water (OK, a canal) and you can tie up your boat right at their dock (or drive in, as most do!). The rooms are spacious and clean, complete with kitchenettes and private baths. Our room, on the second floor, had a great view of the water, the docks, and the small swimming pool (not heated, so we only got our toes wet...). So far, so good.

We learned that the Inn changed hands about a year ago (we met the mother of one of the new owners, and she was more than pleasant) and that "improvements are ongoing." That is a good thing, because this is not quite up to the quality level that most Bed and Breakfasters have come to expect. The bed was comfortable, but the bedding pretty threadbare. The mirror in the bathroom had a small crack, and the collection of dishes, silverware and glasses looked right out of a low-end flea market. We learned after the fact (on checkout) that there was no daily housekeeping unless specifically requested - ditto for towel exchange. There was no lighting for the stairs to the second floor, yet there was great lighting elsewhere. We'll go back next year and hope to see evidence of improvements - the location alone warrants that.

Room Tip: Second floor is recommended, despite the dark stairs. View is worth the climb!

We stayed at Tarpon Flats Inn for three nights. I wish we would stay longer and the weather was warmer. Its a very welcoming place, tranquil and well kept. Their small sandy beach is great place to sunbath. They offer free kayaks which we used to paddle to the John Pennekamp state park just a short paddle across the bay and free bikes. Great stay!

Like other recent reviewers we appreciated what this low-key inn offered: very friendly service, quiet waterfront, and good value. Nothing fancy but just fine for these two frequent travelers who prefer small out of the beaten path places. Liked the kayaks there for the taking and Rose's recommendations on where to go. Spent five heavenly hours paddling through the mangroves and over into pennecamp state park
