“Nice Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2014

The seafarer was not a luxury resort when it was new, and it is no longer new.
That said, we thought it was a fun little place.
We stayed one night, while passing through Key Largo on our way south.
It was very affordable for the area. Although small, our room was clean. The staff was friendly and helpful.
The grounds had a fun, tacky feel. The small beach offered beautiful gulf views, and was fine for a short swim.

Room Tip: AC units are a little noisy, but the "white noise" covers up highway noise. Rooms near th...

My stay here was a nightmare. The room was dark and so small that there was no way to roll my small luggage bag between the foot of the bed and the wall. The bathroom was tiny - I don't believe a normal to large person could fit in it. The air conditioner was clanky and loud, and the ceiling dripped water [I hope it was water!] during even light rain. There was a mild but pervasive odor of mold. The desk staff were too absorbed in their own issues to work with. Instant coffee only in the room. I travel extensively and would have to rank this at the bottom of my hotel experiences in the US. There are far better values in Key Largo that are much larger and cleaner. If you want to experience what the Keys may have been like in the 1920s, you might enjoy this. If not, pass.

I've mentioned that Garden 1 and 2 are small rooms but many people love them because they are very economical. Additionally, we upgraded the bed from a double to a queen bed based on guest feedback.

To make a long story short.....Christopher booked a very economical package but wanted a cottage at no extra charge. We simply couldn't do it. He got very upset and threatened me to post negative reviews.

I admit that the shock of such a boldface threat left me unresponsive.

Wonderful time in V4, great kitchen set up with our own grill to use. Friendly staff with kudos to Scott, he went above and beyond. Even the squirrels were nice. The sunsets were beautiful and snorkeling and kayaking were nice assets. We'll be back...

I know the Seafarer calls itself a resort but it is not, and that's okay. What it is is a charming, clean, well-swept, friendly cottage system in Key Largo worth staying in. The Keys are expensive and many places are either not on the water or no swimming is allowed. Not so with the Seafarer and that makes this place noteworthy. Having the bay steps away from your cottage is relaxing, and there are ample deck chairs and hammocks to lounge in. There are also free kayaks available so you can take a turn around the cove and see all sorts of fish in the water while you paddle. Some people have left reviews complaining about the price but I vehemently disagree: for a family of three to stay in a two-bedroom cottage (we were in #5, Dorado, which is ideally situated on the grounds as not being right on top of the water nor too close to the highway) with free coffee in the AM, a suitable bathroom, plenty of beach towels provided, and access to a small but serviceable swimming bay, all for less that $200 a night, is a bargain especially when the larger resorts nearby are charging almost double that and don't offer much more in the way of amenities. You can't go wrong with the staff and location of the Seafarer.

Room Tip: Cottage #5 Dorado is not too close to either the highway or the water

My stay here was a nice one. The staff is very polite and makes sure you feel right at home. The grounds are kept very clean every day by them . It is not a fancy place by any means but does have that old Florida charm you go to the keys for. One big thing is they do have a beach. It is not much but with all the islands being rocked up so they do not erode it is nice to just sit in one of their many chairs and hammocks and relax. They really do the best they can for you and you will see that with the free kayaks and coffee in the morning. It is not a Hilton so do not expect that or you will be let down. What it is, is a family run resort that treats you as a individual not just $$.

Room Tip: The rooms are all different but the redfish cottage is a nice room with a small bath.

Everyone knows the Florida Keys is an expensive place to stay, and it was our fault that we didn't book in advance of arriving. Naturally all the more modern chain hotels were booked out the night we got there and the last room that we could find anywhere in Key Largo was here. We reluctantly forked out $165+tax for our outdated double room that Saturday night. Needless to say, we checked out the next day because despite the price dropping Sunday-Thursday, we didn't really feel like the motel was worth the money. There weren't nice amenities to make a lengthy stay comfortable. The room was clean, but the wifi was basically non-existent (could barely connect), the "beach" that I'm assuming makes this place a 'resort' is a tiny strip of sand with some chairs - don't expect waves or much space to sit or move around in the water. The kayaks are a nice touch though. The bathroom and shower were tiny, so it makes showering and getting ready really difficult, especially if you have to share the bathroom. Also the ceiling fan needed to be kept on at night along with the air conditioning because when you turn the ceiling fan off, many little flies come through in the ceiling hole above it.

That being said the service was friendly, and if you like a quieter, more old-fashioned and quaint place, this place would be nice (especially if you have a large family and want a place to have BBQs with outdoor seating and bigger suites (we noticed larger rooms toward the beach that could fit more people)). We are budget travelers but like more modern furnishings, and more open space. The Seafarer is close enough to many restaurants and activities in Key Largo, so the location is good.

We found the place to be nice and acceptable for an overnight stay (despite the high price of all hotels on a weekend) but if we had the choice to stay somewhere else on that night at a comparable price we would have not stayed here, because we didn't feel that we got our money's worth.

My diving buddy and I were looking for good basic, clean accomodations after a full day of diving and the Seafarer fit the bill. Nice little cottage style units. We arrived late at night and our room key and info was conveniently available for us to retrieve.
