This review is only of the Fort Taylor tour which is not to be missed. It is held every day at 12:00 noon and is free. Our Park Ranger Jerry was fantastic. He was interesting, knowledgeable and clearly enjoys his job. He answered all our questions and was very entertaining. The tour takes about an hour and we learned a lot about South Florida, the Fort and the accuracy of cannons! If you have time for the tour please take it. It's worth your time and energy to learn some of the history of Key West.

So here's the deal. All of the beaches including bahia honda are full of stinky rotting seaweed and are virtually unusable for water activities right now. However the hidden gem is fort Zachary at the tip of key west. It's location makes it immune to whatever is causing the other beaches to have the problems. The water is perfect, clean, virtually seaweed free and beach is beautiful. So if you are bummed out when you drive up to Smathers, go on down the road about 10 minutes to fort zac

One scorching July afternoon my girlfriend and I went to the Fort Zachary beach. Its a nice little walk from Duval Street and there was a convenient cantina when we arrived. The problem with the place is that it is very rocky. The beach itself is walkable depending on where you go but the entrance to the water is like walking on nails.

It is not the prettiest beach, nor the most convenient if your goal is to tan by the ocean. However, if you are want a super cheap place to go snorkeling; its perfect. There are two major rock outcroppings and between the beach and them, there are more fish than I can count. You literally swim with the fish! And not just tiny ones either... some must have been upwards of a foot long!

Despite its shortcomings as a beach area, its actually quite hard to find a better one on the Duval side of Key West. I would suggest it for snorkeling, not for beach activities.

if you have done the Mallory Square sunset and are looking for a quiet spot to enjoy an amazing event this is the spot for you. But be ready to leave as soon as the sun sets.

The park is divided into sections - the fort and the beach. The fort is definitely worth a trip. The beach was clean and the water warm. However, if you are expecting smooth white sand, think again. Thanks to the reef, the beach is rocky. Bring water shoes and you will be fine.
