If you are looking for a good deal but don't require luxury, this is the military lodge for you. We wanted to go to Key West for a week but didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a place to sleep at night.
The NAS Fly Navy Lodge is an awesome deal! I have included pictures below of the room. This is classified as the "Standard Suite" on the DoD lodging site and goes for $70 per night. The best part is that you aren't paying any sales tax or other taxes on this ammount. Compared with even the cheapest hotels in the area, this makes the lodge a great deal.
The standard suite was perfect for two people, but would probably be a bit tight for an entire family. The suite includes a bathroom with a shower and tub, separate bedroom and living areas, and a very small mini kitchen.
There is no stove in the kitchen, only a dorm-room sized refrigerator and a microwave. However the nicest feature is a personal Kuerig machine-which they provide coffee, creamers, and sweeteners for.
There were two TVs, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. Also in both rooms were DVD players.
In the closet is a safe that you set the code to. I never worried about our stuff being taken, but it was a nice feature.
The staff of the lodge is very friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to help with directions to sight seeing and other areas of interest.
The lodge was 100% clean. It was the first hotel I've ever stayed in that I didn't feel like I might want to clean the tub; it was practically medically sterile. My only complaint was that there seems to be a shortage of wash clothes in the lodge. The first day we had none. On day three, I asked that they come clean the room and all they really did was take the trash and exchange the linens, there was no cleaning. At this time, they left us one wash cloth. I had to go to the desk later that day and ask for wash cloths.
The linens on the bed were very, very soft and nice and the bed was very comfortable. I have back problems and thought it would be a rought week but I was very pleasantly surprised. The towels were another story. They are basically the rough, white, cheap hotel towels that you've seen before. Nothing special.
There is a restaurant and bar on location but the hours are weird and the restaurant is only open for continental breakfast in the morning. Since there is so much good food in Key West, don't waste your $5.
You will be expected to pay for your full stay when you arrive so be sure of how many days you are staying. If you must cancel after you've paid, they will refund you via mail, they cannot do credits to credit cards and debit cards on site. The DoD lodging site for reservations is: http://dodlodging.net/NAS_KEYWEST.HTM#
There is a small shopette on site but there is no commissary or Class 6; grocery stores and liquor stores are close by though.
If you didn't rent a car, rent a bike and you can easily ride from here to Duval street. Use the MWR for all your attraction tickets (located at Truman Annex bldg. 5282 ----------) and run to the commissary for your food needs, you'll have the cheapest vacation ever!
Like I said, if you're looking for a bargain, this is it!
