“Key West, Sun. Sea and Crowds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2013

We had a 2 br, 2 bath, full kitchen, laundry, unit overlooking Marina. Looks exactly like pictures of property room we were given. Selected property using Timeshare exchange as this is not a hotel. If you want a hotel then maybe better going next door to Marriott. This resort is more suitable for longer stays like 1 week. Went by other review recommendations and had a great room location overlooking Marina on 4th floor. Really, this was best experience for us as you can look out over Gulf, see dock activities, people watch, etc, etc from your balcony deck. When you venture out everything is literally outside your door or a few minutes away. You don't feel like you are in center of town (very small) but far enough away walk to everything. Right on the water, boardwalk, restaurants (ouch exprensive) and water activities. Since the entire town is very small you could almost say this for other resorts but was told only three properties are on waterfront in Key West so this is one of them. Check in was smooth, Heather our Activities person assigned to guest was helpful/cheerful. Warning, parking is major problem, little of it and very tight to fit in. Bring smaller car or as some do fly directly into Key West and skip the rental. Because of location you are going to have daily (sometimes hourly) weather shifts from Sunny, Cloudy, Windy, Calm, Rain, Hot all in same day sometimes. But that comes with any location so open to surrounding area. We went on fishing trip but seas were so rough almost everyone got sick. However, know that many of the booked activites give you 24 hour cancellation or will still waive that if you give almost any reason to cancel which we did next day opting out of all day water activity booking as everyone was still not feeling well from boat ride. Overall, this is a tourist town so prices reflect that no way around it. But there are cheap activities if you ask the locals. Every night on water in Mallory square there is an Arts Festival. Or rent a bike(s), scooters, or just walk. Take the Trolly that allows unlimited hop-on-off during trip plus guided tour. During Trolley trip get off at Butterfly Conservatory stop you will not be disappointed. And of course everyone gets off near "Southern Most" spot for a picture and the Hemingway House stop. If you rent a car know that most locations outside Key West are about two hours or more away. So even with a car you are kind of stuck staying near town unless you plan all day trip drive/visit some place outside. Driving is a pain because single lane roads, shiffting posted speed limits, construction, and conditions are not always safe because people will take some time scary lane changes to jump ahead. We were stuck one hour on bridge near Marathon because traffic closed both ways until it could be cleared because (I’m guessing) head on collision. You will see at Key West before going out of town onto Highway 1 a posted sign keep running count of these yearly driving fatalities (13 when we were there).
If you want night life then there is Duval Street for the young set (we are Seniors). Restaurant and shops galore. Beaches are ok, crowded but better than Miami. If first time going would limit to less than 7 days to maybe only 4 which is enough to see everything on your first trip and still leave with some money left over. Was told summer is busy months and beginning Sept visitors drop off alot and is way less crowded until Nov/Dec picks up again for East Coast people escaping from winter weather. Glad we went, love to go back again with family. (note this review was already posted on Galleon Resort review section).

Room Tip: Be sure book Marina side you won't be disappointed. The 1st level units have a private spiral s...

For starters a sleep 6 unit needs two parking spaces unless you own a minivan. Flew into Key West took rental to meet family who drove in to find that they wanted to tow my rental car because only one space per unit. Would cost $25 per day to park down the road more than daily rental fee? This needs to be addressed. I would of took taxi instead of pre-paying rental. Resort has nice view, bands okay, pool, and hot tub clean But maintenance comes in without notice. Walked in from balcony to find male worker trimming plant over my sleeping 17 year old daughter. Vacation was still great but these were a few notable things.

Just leaving the place after 1 week stay which we did as a last minute exchanged. This is our first time staying at the resort and in Key West. We drove from Md, stopped and picked up our son and drove down stopping in New Orleans French Quarter, Destin, Punta Gorda, the Fl everglades to Key West. The Galleon is the perfect location, few steps from Duval Street, easy to walk to every site in Key West. We circled the Island, from going to the aquarium (something to do for free if you have kids, but also for adults gives you lots of information).

Our stay at the Galleon was great!, from the easy, no wait, courteous check in. Louis and I forgot the other lady's name, were very nice.

The Tiki Bar, sorry that we only went there our last night, Grubby makes great drinks, 2-4-1 we order the angus sliders and the jalapeno poppers, they were out of the conch fritters.................:(

The pool attendant, I didn't get his name.......was very funny and friendly, to find a friendly face in the resort is always a +.

We mostly walked the whole island from the most southern point, beautiful walk, beautiful grand victorians you can also do Heminway's house on the walk.

We ate at the smoking tuna, the tuna in wassaby sauce was great! as well as their shrimp and chips.

We also went to the corner bakery in old town, we bought this heavy pecan bread that was huge for $7, but it was worth it. Their pastries are a little price. There is also market in town, forgot the name we though was reasonable if you don't feel like going to publix. Prices at the super markets are very reasonable, so for those who like to bring stuff, don't everything is very reasonable, (we thought it was going to be like Hawaii, everything overpriced)

We also went to the Whit Tarpon, for oysters at .50 cents, which were very reasonable around the corner from the Galleon on the board walk.

We did a fishing trip with tortuga which was fun, didn't catch anything (well my son caught one big enough to keep) though it was expensive but fun. My son did the Eco stand up paddleboat key west. also on the board walk around the corner from the Galleon resort

Going back to the Galleon, we stayed at a remodeled 2 bedroom unit on the 2nd fl of the A nbuilding. The unit has a balcony that can be accessed from the master bedroom and livingroom area. You can see the small beach, pool and tikki bar, but I don't think they have any units where you don't have ocean view. There is a small beach area that is very nice. There are plenty of beach chairs in the pool, the beach and the tiki bar. There is a hot tub, everything is very clean. People are very courteous and do not "reserve" seats. Perhaps is the time that we were here (17-24 Aug) but there was always somewhere to sit and enjoy the view. This is a wonderful resort and a we had a nice stay.

There is remodeling going on, but they are very careful not to disturb you, other than the seeing the crew trucks we hardly noticed any disturbance. I hope the owners, renters and other occupants take care of this resort. Our bathrooms were remodeled and beautiful with granite counters. I don't know if the Kitchen was remodeled, but ours didn't have granite counters and unfortunately the counter tops already had marks. Also the smokers, leave their cigarett buts around............discusting. Take care of the resorts! it saves on that additional maitenance fee we all pay...........I know we pay a lot in our resort...

We found the place easy to walk to every place! I felf safe everywhere I went.

great night life on Duval street.

Room Tip: We stayed in Bldg A 34, 2nd floor, we were happy with our view (unit was remodeled.) sorry we did n...

We visit Key West often and have stayed at several different places. The galleon has topped them all! We have a breath taking view of the gulf with French doors that open to a patio from both the living and bedroom. The kitchen and baths have been remodeled and are just beautiful! The pool and hot tub are clean with plenty of lounge chairs. The Pool girl is very friendly and helpful. My only compliant would be the front desk staff are not very friendly and at times rude. But I did not need to deal with them very much.
Will definitely stay here again.

This is a pretty sad excuse for a Tiki Bar, every time we have stayed at this resort the bartender claims she does not make Mojito's this is a lame excuse no mint or sugar, if I were the manager of this Tiki Bar I would make sure all the Bartenders knew how and had the ingredients to make the most popular Tropical drink for decades...I will not stay at this resort again for this fact alone, the bartender seemed to by very smug about the fact she did not have to make Mojito's because they are to complicated HUH!
I think if everyone asked maybe they would get on board...

We have been coming to The Galleon since my mother purchased a unit pre-construction in 1986. Over the last almost 30 years Key West has undergone a LOT of changes. However, we have always found our unit to be clean and fresh and you just can't beat the location! Since these buildings have been here nearly thirty years of course there is some wear and tear - but they are updating the kitchens, bathrooms, and furniture slowly. I see many reviews where people used their RCI points and ended in a small 'lockout' room - indeed, these are not the best accommodation but if you're using points you're sort of stuck with what they give you. As an owner we have a delightfully light, airy, and very roomy two bedroom condo without the lockout feature. For condos they are remarkably quiet - we only hear noises from the Marina - which we overlook - when it's very busy or when it's very quiet and some drunks wander through there.

The Galleon dock Bar and Grill can have very uneven service. These things are not part of the Galleon proper - rather they are leased operations - but in Key West the concept of Island Time is well known and this uneven service is par for the course.

Parking here has ALWAYS been a problem - even in the early days! You are NOT assured of a parking spot on site what with the construction trucks and other guests parking. You can park across the street or down near the Historic Seaport and pay to park your car - you're not going to need it anyway. But if you time your arrival for an off-peak time, especially in the early nighttime hours, you can usually make yourself a space somewhere. We even found a place to squeeze in our full-sized pickup truck.

So while this place is lacking many of the 'hotel' amenities, you have to remember that it's NOT a hotel. It's a condo complex for people who plan to stay at least a week and want a full kitchen and to be left alone. It works beautifully for that. If you want a mint on your pillow and daily cleaning or coffee service, then you'll be better served in one of the many lovely hotels on the island. This place is geared for families who are staying a while and want the room. For that, you can't beat it!

Room Tip: Skip the 'Lockout' units and get a regular two bedroom unit - and plan to stay awhile!
