“Trepidation and high hopes.”
Reviewed 20 February 2013

I stayed here two nights in mid-February '13 and had been there a year earlier also.
Dont expect to reach them by phone -- all I got was a machine and no return call. The voice tells you they have lunch from 12:30-1:30. When I arrvd at 1:45, a sign in the office window said they're out until 2:30, and the large message board nearby says the office is open 24 hours/day.
Try to avoid them at Spring Break. Prices are higher and if the less expensive bunks are full your alternative is a room in the affiliated motel, at around $160/night last year.
They are close to 'downtown' KW. in a residential neghborhood. Like most hostels, you take your chances with bunkmates. Some are thoughtful and have figured out they are not the only guests, others dont know how to use lowered voices, turn out lights, and close doors quietly. Quiet hours are supposed to be after 11PM, but for a touring biker after 50 miles on the Rt 1,
loud conversation is not what's needed.
That all said, I'd use them again, with trepidation and high hopes.

Room Tip: For men's bunks, use the back room of the two attached to stay away from the opening door and ba...

We stayed in this motel for one night Considering the location and price, this place is fair enough. Not far from Key West "center street" You need to remember ,that this is really a standardt old school motel, so forget all fancy things. You have beds, fridge and shower, nothing more nothing less :D We arrived in late hours and clerk in the office was very helpful and friendly, rooms we tidy , so all the pro's from that.
I would recommend this for all of those, who arent affraid to leave from own " comfort zone" :)

I think some reviewers need to remember this is a hostel! It's not a hotel, service may not equal the Hyatt but for what it is... it's great! Michael the owner operator is friendly and helpful. My friend and I arrived after a 30 hour drive and he let us check into the mixed dorm early. You are a short walk from the Southern Most Point and Duval Street. My recommendation is heading down Whitehead and visiting some places off Duval. The hostel beds are comfy, hot running water and sheets are provided. My only comment is that there should be a second floor drain in the mixed-dorm bathroom. Definitely bring your shower flops. The people who work there are friendly and helpful. The people who stay are all a ton of fun! I would stay here again and again!

Room Tip: Mixed-Dorm to meet more people.

I know it's the only hostel in town but it's superexpensive for what it is.. It's the most basic hostel i've ever stayed in!! I would rather pay a little bit extra than stay here.. The rooms look like in the military and the bulgarian guy who's in charge of the hostel is just helpful when you're checking in, other than that he's not happy to help you at all..

There's no common area inside, it's all outside and the kitchen is not very clean. No breakfast what so ever even if it costs 44 dollars minimum to stay here!!! And it costs FIVE dollars to just rent a towel!

I would never stay here again!!

I had a great trip in Key West. the service is good, location is good, and the price is the cheapest one in Key West. And i made a lot of friend there. this hostel is definitely a good choice to live.

It is very unfortunate that this is the only youth hostel in the key west (June 2012). When I walked in the male dorm I was very disappointed and actually wondered whether I was still in the US. Here are some of the problems:

1) The bunks were old made of wood and some were broken. Two of them were in this nasty old nook, which thankfully I didn't have to sleep on.

2) Expensive (around 40 a night) which in my opinion is not worth it. I've found way better places for around $20 a night.

3) Really dirty bathroom and when it rained it leaked so the entire floor was wet.

4) Beware of the pictures which were taken when the hostel was in its heyday. I don't think it's been renovated in a looong time. However I heard that they "might" renovate.

Sad to say, I could only last a night and since I couldn't get a refund I moved to a motel room ($100+ a night) which was decent, but again not even worth $100.

On the positive the location is nice, they have free parking and the staff was nice. However, in all honestly I would not recommend this place unless you have no other option. It is very unfortunate that this is the only hostel in key west so you kind of have no choice. Good luck if you choose to stay here.....

Room Tip: Hostel rooms aren't the best. Find a buddy and try opt for a motel room instead.

I was forced to stay there, because I've got stuck on Key West. Russian girl on the front desk was quite helpful, but the rest was awful. She offered me a private room for !$65! or dorm for !! $45 !! I took dorm, because private would be nearly the same price as hotels around. So I paid and what I've got? Dirty room, everything looked like from old Soviet union, half-functional toilet and when I asked about towel, she wanted another $5 for it. There are security lockers in the backyard for one buck per 24h but they are smelly inside. Kitchen is a kind of open air space and I saw there a rat, twice. So overall, it was terrible experience, which was little bit more acceptable because of location- it is few blocks from southernmost point and duval street. But still, this is a NO-NO for me.
