My wife and I booked a room for 3 days in April at Papa's Hideaway, mostly based on our very positive experiences 10+ years ago when Papa's Hideaway was owned and run by Pat and Ellen. Unfortunately, I then contracted pneumonia and had to cancel 5 days before our expected arrival. When I called, I was informed that no refund was possible. Now I can understand a no refund policy if they cannot re-rent the room but to not even try seems poor service to me. Very disappointing.

My wife and I were initially disappointed that Papa's was sold and that the owners were no longer on site. It was one on the things we really liked about the B&B experience. We also missed the morning breakfast by the pool. It was a chance to meet with other guests and chat about the day's activities. On the plus side though, the upgrades to the property, especially the new beds and the new kitchen, were a nice surprise. Papa's still offers the quiet retreat experience that keeps us coming back. It is high our list of vacation destinations. We will be back!

This is a no frills property that was exactly what we were looking for. Not to close to Duval but a very quick walk to great food, nightlife and activities. The rental company is great to work with and offered transportation to the property and back to the airport.

I unexpectedly ended up here with my girlfriend on an impromptu trip. This was a great place to relax and recharge for a few days. If you're looking for a typical hotel experience, this is not the place. If you want to feel like you're staying at a friends beautiful vacation home, this is the place! It's just a few blocks off of Duval Street which made for some fun nights. But at the end of it all you could retreat away to this very quiet place tucked away in a dead-end street. Lots of privacy and a very nice pool to relax in as well as plenty of shade.

After reading the reviews for Papa's Hideaway, and having stayed in many different bed and breakfast, we had high expectations for our three night stay. We had booked several months in advance of our stay and had early on corresponded with the owner on a couple of occasions. Sometime after we booked, the owner sold out and the property was now being managed by "Key West Vacation Rentals". No longer was the owner on site to give it that personal touch and interact with the guest. If there was a question or a problem, you had to contact the "KWVR" office and they had normal business hours, so if it was an emergency, you had an after hours number to call. Were glad we did not have to check that "service" out. To check in, and out you have to either park at Papa's and walk 3-4 blocks to "KWVR" office or drive there and try to find parking, which is tough no matter where you go in old Key West. I chose to walk.
The room itself was large and comfortable. However, the sliding door used to access the room did not lock and the only security was a slated wooden door to the patio area that had a lock on it.
When we checked in, we were asked to select when we would want our room done each day. This was useless as the person doing the cleaning either did not get the information or did not follow the schedule. Breakfast was never set up on time as was on scheduled. Of the three mornings we were there, it was always 15 to 30 mins late. Also each day there was a different girl that showed up to set up. None of the three understood English when I asked them a question. Breakfast itself was nothing much. Cereal, a couple different breads for toast, banana's or apples, coffee, tea, juice and yogurt.
During our stay there was a lot of maintenance going on fixing up the exterior of one of the buildings. They were scraping old paint from the railing and porch and repainting. The problem with that was that it was right beside the pool and the pool was covered with paint chips and dust. There was no one there to clean it, so when we returned in the evening and wanted to cool off, I spent 30 minutes using the skimmer and then only improved the conditions by 50%. The rest of the small grounds were lush and fairly attractive.
We had little to no hot water the first two nights we were there. Also the shower had no place to set you shampoo, soap, razor, etc. You had to lay it on the floor. I made mention of this to one of the owners that came on site, and was told that they thought these problems had been solved.
If we return to Key West, we would not use this B&B again. I will also be more careful when booking in the future to avoid somewhere that is managed by a rental company instead of the onsite owners.

Mike

Recently I had the pleasure of spending fourteen days at the lovely, private, gated, quiet Papa's Hideaway. I never expected anything so relaxing close to everything. While renovations were going on to renew the grounds and buildings, the workers finished everything quickly, efficiently and obtrusivelessly. The housekeeping staff were pleasant and pleasing. I would like to be able to return soon and often. Thank you

Everything at Papa's was perfect. The salt water pool (which changed from the last time I was here) was an awesome addition. Love the new patio furniture out by the pool and on the private patio. The management team was great and even gave us a ride to the airport. Can't wait to come back next year!
