My husband chose Marrero's due to the clothing optional pool area, which is something we had never done before, but wanted to try. As nice as that was, the house itself, the owners, and the guests we met were even better. We arrived a few hours early on a Sunday, and stopped in to just drop off our bags, so we could walk around Duval Street until the room was ready. Lo and behold, when Steve greeted us, he told us our room was ready and we could check in right then. How nice is that? Steve was very friendly and funny, and gave us a tour of the property, and explained the house rules. We also met the resident cat, and several other guests in the pool area. Although we had never done clothing optional before, I knew right away that we would have no problem joining in(and didn't), because it really just seemed so natural, and removes any barriers one would have when meeting new people for the first time. I highly recommend it!
I had chosen Room 18 when I booked the reservation a month previous, based on the location of the room, the size of the bed, and a natural curiosity about it being "haunted". While we did not encounter anything supernatural, we loved the room. Great furnishings, semi-private verandah, nice bathroom.
The rest of the house had really nice decor and ambience(as well as an awesome pool area), and we spent some time before checking out discussing the furnishings/artwork in the house with Steve's wife, and she was able to tell us where some of the artwork came from, as we want to purchase several items we saw. She and Steve were friendly, welcoming, and we enjoyed their home very much.
We spent part of Sunday afternoon at the pool, then joined the other guests for happy hour at 5 on the front verandah. Steve provided drinks, another guest had made veggie shooters, and we had a great time getting to meet everyone, as well as getting recommendations for where to eat that night. Just a nice, relaxing time, in a perfect location with good company. Upon returning from dinner, we were too tired to go back down to the pool, and that is the only thing I regret. It would have been nice to spend more time getting to know people, while enjoying a late night swim. The following morning we had a lovely continental breakfast, and then went back to the pool before checkout. Unfortunately, it started to rain before too long, so we spent the last few hours in our room, relaxing.
Upon checkout, we asked Steve if we could leave our bags there until it was time to get back on our ferry home, and not only did he do that for us, he offered us the use of an umbrella, which was very sweet of him. (We stupidly declined the offer, and came back a few hours later looking like drowned rats).
Our brief time at Marrero's was wonderful, and we definitely will recommend it to anyone we know traveling to KW. Any future visits we have to KW will be spent there, and we look forward to becoming "repeat offenders" the next time!
