“Great view of the sunset”
Reviewed 18 May 2012

I've travelled with my husband and kids (ages 2 and 4). We stayed on an ocean front room and that proved to be a great choice as we could watch the sunset from our balcony, with the kids playing around (staying in the crowd with kids that age wouldn't be an option). I was quite afraid as I've read other reports, but we had no problem with cruise ships blocking our view.

The hotel is very well located - walking distance from Duval Street, many restaurants, a very nice toy store (on the little mall right beside the hotel, don't miss if you're travelling with kids),and other attractions.

My kids enjoyed the private beach, that you can reach after a nice 10 minute boat ride. My only remark is that the pool is small and always too crowded while we were there.

I spend 100+ nights per year in hotel rooms and travel to Key West regularly. This was my 4th visit to this Westin and most likely my last...

The Good Stuff:
Location is ideal for all sightseeing and water activities.
Property's exterior looks well maintained/clean.
Vales were welcoming and hardworking; willing to help with luggage, open doors, etc.
Room was spacious, clean and smelled nice.
"Heavenly" bed which is allways great...

Areas of Failure:
Front desk personal were not friendly or forth comming with answers to basic questions or hotel amenitites/services.
With the exception of the vales; was never greeted or acknowledged by any staff I encountered.
Interior corridors were littered with room service trays/dishes and glasses. Saw trash on floor that was there my entier stay; never got vaccumed.
Room was dated with visable ware-n-tear in walls, furniture and doors.
Burnt-out lights bulbs in room; took 2 calls and over 3 hours to get replaced.
Called guest services and conciege; rang so many times I got tired and hung up.
No "Heavenly" shower/bathroom; isn't this a standard for Westins? If for "Green/Island" reasons this should be disclosed on thier web site and other bathroom amenities provided in it's place...
Pool is too small for such a large property.
Even for Key West this Westin is expensive! Is in no way 4-5 stars as marketed with it's current management and lack of standards.

Better value and service levels can be found at Casa Marina, Southern Most Hotel, Santa Maria Suites and Eden House.

Room and bedding is first class, but service is virtually non-existent. Room equipped with the cheapest plastic drink cups instead of actual glasses, amenities included no shampoo either day, no USA Today as promised, not a chance to see the sunset as we have a room by the pool which is surrounded by buildings 3 stories tall. There is a gigantic ship in port today, so the waterfront rooms will also have the same experience. We returned to our room today at 4 p.m. looking forward to a rest after exploring Key West all day, and the room has not yet been cleaned. After the cleaning people arrived, we walked up to Bistro 245 to have a drink. Two bartenders were standing behind the bar with no customers because the barstools and chairs were soaked from rain, and they acted surprised we couldn't sit. So we also left in disgust as we found later others had. We expected the $20 parking fee, but were also looking forward to first class service to go along with the 5 star rating this hotel enjoys. We stayed at the Marriott in Key Largo for 2 days on our way down and the service was excellent.

Room Tip: Not sure I would spend this kind of money, especially with these hugh cruise ships docking all day a...

This top class hotel meets all criteria - it's not cheap as it's 5 star rating would suggest but it's well worth it. Excellent Sunset views from your balcony or the 2nd Floor Sunset Bar or Quayside while you dine. Rooms very well appointed, in-room safes, gowns etc. Parking $20 per day or $22 valet parking. Pool beautiful, lovely landscaping, excellent poolside service, very tranquil. Right beside Duval Street. Great customer service in every aspect of this hotel. Latitudes Restaurant which is part of the hotel is located on the island off the mainland which houses villas and cottages for an island experience. Book this restaurant well in advance and if you stay in the hotel a boat will take you out and back. An amazing dining experience on the sand with the waves lapping on the shore while you watch the sun set. The food and service here is definitely first class and a true fine dining experience - not to be missed. This place is a big treat don't deny yourself if only once!

Room Tip: Sunset views are obviously the best but are expensive. Could book pool view room and go to sunset...

We stayed at this hotel in early May 2012. Upon checking in, we were given a room with two Queen Beds - only my spouse & I were occupying the room. We ask if we could get one with a King Bed. Elliot at the front desk staff sad no, but we could come back tomorrow and ask again. Elliot said he was sorry and would like to send a bottle of wine up to our room - would we like red or white. We said red. The wine never arrived. We were sent to another building about 75 feet away from the check-in area and never were offered any help with our luggage. The room was fine and overlooked the pool. The next morning we went down and ask if we could get a king bedded room. They said "no way". The following day, we were out most of the day and came back to the room hot & tired. The room was not cleaned. We called the "Service Express" number and inquired about getting our room cleaned. When we didn't hear anything back, my spouse went to the front desk to see about getting the room cleaned. They told us we had checked out that morning after two nights - we had a five night reservation. I returned to the front desk with my confirmation paperwork. They said they were sorry, but a night clerk had pushed the wrong button on the computer and checked us out. They offered us an upgraded room to help make up for the mistake they made - which we took and had to repack everything and move. If you are a Gold or Platinum SPG member, do not expect ANY recognition of your status at this hotel. As a Gold SPG member, I ask for a 1 1/2 hour later check-out because of the time our plane was leaving and they wouldn't even consider it. The management at this hotel are not Starwood employees, but an outsourced management company. The hotel is not more than a Starwoods Category 4 hotel at most......but they call it a Category 6. Also, when you get your final bill, check it closely. We were charged for Valet Parking and we didn't have a car.

Room Tip: Rooms with a total ocean view will have a cruise ship come in that will totally block your view unti...

We drove down to key west for a few days after arriving in Orlando on holiday. First point: the drive is 380 miles each way and with speed limits, a 7 hour drive....
Only booked on a whim so unusually for me, not much research went into the hotel, but we pulled out a good one! We had 3 rooms on 2nd floor, all facing the courtyard pool, all spacious and well equipped. Sunset deck was great, as was food in bistro, especially breakfast on the harbour walkway.
Negatives? One slight one, we had what appeared to be a rather tearse waiter serving breakfast first morning, however, after speaking to him later about local areas to see, it was clear that it was just his nature, although that doesn't bode well for his profession....
Can't beat the location, you are right there for evening activities and great views of the cruise ships and sunset key..
No hesitation in booking again when we return
TCinSF's review below seems fair as well....

After a 2 day stay, we concluded that Key West is the land of charming key west victorians, loud bars, tacky gift shops, key lime, cuban cigars, conch, gorgeous sunsets, water sports, cruise ships, and art galleries. We used our Starwood points to stay at the West Key West Resort & Marina for free. Here are my comments:

+ Overall, wonderful customer service. Special shout out to Adrian at the front desk and Becki at concierge. Both were friendly and helpful. One nice feature is that we were able to book our attraction tickets through Becki and for no extra charge. The costs appeared in the final hotel bill so you only have to pay once. Very convenient. On the minus side, when I approached a staff (who was in the gym at the time) about gym hours, he didn't have the answer, and he didn't offer to find out for me. Also, although I forgot to hang the "Do Not Disturb" sign one time, housekeeping should knock on the door first before opening it.
+ Great location. Convenient to Duval Street, which is the spine of the historic district. From the hotel, it's an easy to walk to Fort Zach/Eco-Discovery Center, Southernmost Point, the Lighthouse and Hemingway's House, and other key attractions in the historic district.
+ I've read a number of reviews about the ginormous cruise ships docking near the hotel and blocking the ocean views. The boats arrive in the morning and depart in the afternoon, leaving a glorious view of the waters during sunset. It's worth asking for an ocean view room.
+ Nice pool and lounging area. Towels and ice cold water are provided courtesy of the hotel.
+ Mini fridge was empty, so we were able to go to a local market to buy breakfast items. Very convenient and helps keep expenses down.
+ Heavenly bed. Enough said.
- Gym was ok, equipped than 6 cardio machines (1 broken, a few rusting) in one small room and 1 bench, 1 ball, 1 few mats and set of weights in the other equally small room. It would feel very claustrophobic if more than 2 people occupied the weight/stretching area. I think Westin can do better.

You can do valet parking or self-parking. We went with the latter. It's $20 per day and the garage is next to the hotel.

Recommended things to do/eat: Sunset gathering of street performers at Mallory Square and Conch Train Tour. Point 5 for yummy pizzas and small plates and El Sibourney for Cuban food.
