It looked like a cute collection of cottages in a tropical clearing in the photos. More like behind the bank in the parking lot. it is a neglected property that lacks minimum routine maintenance, and is worn and old. The shower would not totally shut off, it ran all night, and all the next night too. They have a note on the wall saying how important it is to conserve water, but if the shower had been taken care of, they wouldn't need the note. And the rust stain running down the wall could have been taken care as well.

Room Tip: stay away and try a different motel

We were excited about staying here and ignored the other bad reviews, DONT!
We were traveling from Miami to Key west and this was half way, thinking it would be in a tropical place its not its down a lane which ends in not a nice place no where to go and you need to get back in your car to go any where.

We went across the road to supermarket got food and went back to room to have a meal 1 plate, no knifes to cut the bread or tomatoes with , no kettle to make a cup tea and very few dishes for breakfast. No WIFI , yard was messy and the place needs a lot of refurbishment.

Andy's Tip - Drive out lane back onto main road a mile marker 50 across the road go down that street and you will fins one of the most beautiful beaches in the world small and quiet.

The bad reviews are most accurate. Especially the descriptions of management's less than concerned attitiude. This place is bad business. We also ended up in cottage #1 which is I fact a TRAILER. After the first nite we explained to management that we did not get what we were expecting at and the the website and photos had been misleading. She said she would give us a small discount for the 2nd nite but nothing for the 1st since it had already passed... what. STAY AWAY!!!!!

We booked this place for two nights on Bedandbreakfast.com. We've had good luck using this site but our luck ran out. This is not a B & B. There is no breakfast and no mention anywhere that one isn't included. We assumed there was due to being listed on bedandbreakfast.com. Very pricey at $150 per night plus $10 for our dog. We justified it as probably OK as long as there was a breakfast also included. There wasn't and we didn't find that out until after we had checked in.

We also ended up with the smoke detector going off every time one of us took a shower. No one seemed to care. Room (cottage) was just OK. A very big disappointment and we won't be back and recommend that you don't stay there either.

Room Tip: Perhaps if you get the lowest rate advertised at $85 it might be OK but at $150 it is not worth it.

No complaints. Not one. This place exceeded my expectations. Jeff went above and beyond and was so friendly. I recommend a stand alone cottage. We rented cottage #9. No safety concerns. Quiet, clean and such a unique property. This really added to our overall experience of the keys.

First, I really wanted to like this place. As a seasoned traveler with a flair for adventure, this was the first time in years that I did not feel safe in an area - Marathon in general.

The first night walking back from the Publix plaza around 6 pm I did not feel safe - couldn't quite figure out why, just a gut feeling. Chose to ignore it. That night there were several sirens. The next night there was no staff at Tiki bar, no music as advertised. Around 8pm heard repeated screams from nearby bushes right next to the property. At first it sounded like it could be people playing. It didn't stop, a woman screamed for help, you're hurting me and a man yelling at her. Another guest and I became concerned. There was no staff on site, no answer at cottages emergency number. Guests left the Tiki bar, it was close to the bushes. Called 911, police arrested someone in those bushes.

The next day, at a nearby business noticed a sign "don't come in here if you're drunk or high" - is it that much of a problem in Marathon? That night a man was screaming outside around midnight. Again, no answer from cottages emergency number. Left message, no response. The next day, no one followed up on the message to see if the guests were okay. Kept hearing sirens all night Friday and Saturday. For a town this small, there was a lot of police activity. Spent a few nights in Key West, felt much safer. Driving back on a weekday afternoon again there were several police cruisers with sirens and/or lights at Marathon - and no where else along the drive. Staying in Islamorada felt much safer, if returning to the keys would probably stay in that town instead of Marathon.

Pros:
+simple cottages, rustic old Florida experience, other reviewers called this place a dump, I disagree, the property is actually quite nice if you know what to expect, has a certain charm
+the renovated cottage was very nice, beautiful bathroom as nice as any boutique hotel
+clean
+morning coffee
+comfortable bed, cute island-style furniture & decor
+the staff that was there did their best to be of service
+nice Tiki bar area with colorful hammocks and TV
+mini fridge, microwave, some dishes and cutlery
+close to plaza with K mart, Publix, WinnDixie, Walgreens, restaurants, great ice cream shop

Cons
-paper thin walls, you can hear every word your neighbors say
-no closet, no drawers, basically you're living out of your suitcase
-plumbing issues with toilets and showers
-septic tank malfunctioned and several cottages were flooded with sewage - keep your stuff off the floor and away from the bathroom
-weekend entertainment as advertised did not happen, when asked staff didn't know what was going on with that
-linen service didn't show up so there was a shortage of towels and sheets
-understaffed, even during the day there was a note that staff will be back later
-emergency after hours number goes to main number- no security if you have an issue
-on the map it looks like a walkable area; it's not pedestrian friendly. The only crosswalk is at the Publix plaza, and the road is too busy to cross anywhere else. if you want to walk to the IHOP area you'll have to walk the other way to Publix first

If the owners addressed the plumbing issues (other reviewers mentioned the same issues) and provided more security I would say this is a great cheap place for a one-night stop over on your way to Key West.

Room Tip: Ask for stand-alone cottage away from the road

“Cottage #1”is NOT a cottage at all, just a dilapidated trailer furnished with furniture that missed a trip to the dump. The pictures for this unit are very deceptive! They missed the punched holes in the walls and the mildew spots on the bathroom door and walls. Had to use a plunger to get the water to drain from the tub after a shower. The place was dirty, with stained furniture and pillows. The couch had torn cushion covers with broken zippers and when you sat on it, your knees hit your chin! Impossible for sleeping on the “queen” pullout with a lumpy mattress; not fit for a dog to lay on! The wall unit air conditioner was not strong enough to cool the room and was very loud. When it rained, had to place a trashcan under the window to catch the water running down the inside wall. With the amount of moisture within the “cottage” there was a definite pungent smell of mold and mildew. Even though we did bring it to the management’s attention, her claim is we waited too long, should have expressed concerns after the first night. A little difficult to do when even the person manning the desk had a hard time contacting the owners. The last night of my stay, we were offered another cottage-we were leaving 10am the next morning. The owner’s parting words when I shared with her my concerns, “You get what you paid for”. . Definitely would not recommend this place and won't stay here again.
