“Nice Fishing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Just had our second visit to Cptn Pips and had a great stay and some nice fishing. We did notice that some things are getting a little "old" and in need of some upgrading. I understand a new owner is taking over and intends to do just that and even put in a pool. Can not wait to come back and see the improvement's. that being said we had a great stay, room was spotless and the staff were perfect. will be back.

Thank you for posting to Trip Advisor! We're happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. Yes, a new owner did just take over & has already started making repairs & upgrades. All the buildings are being painted pretty tropical colors this week & the foliage has been trimmed back. There are new flat screen tv's in all the rooms (& in the bedrooms too now), we have free wireless internet, we are providing free coffee & creamer in all the rooms, shampoo, conditioner & soap for the bathrooms, even hair dryers & irons too. Lots more upgrades coming, but the new owner only took over on May 1, so I think he's doing pretty well considering it's only been one week! Oh, just a note, he bought 3 brand new 4 stroke Yamaha engines for the boats before he even took over ownership! Next time you come you will find all kinds of nice changes!

This is for the ladies....I stayed here with my husband for 3 days. We stayed in the Osprey apartment. My husband thought it was an OK stay. I will have to look for another place where we can rent a boat with our stay. This room was clean when we arrived, but needed a LOT of maintenance in my opinion. I have posted some photos as examples. I realize this is an older place, but it really does need a lot of clean up for the price they are charging. The carpet needs replacing. The deck was horrific. I cannot believe this was not cleaned up at all for the high season. The deck furniture needs replacing. The table was on its last leg, literally. The bed should really be replaced as well, very old and not very comfortable. The bathroom isn't bad, just really old fixtures, which I don't really have a problem with. I just feel with the amount of money they charged for our stay, some of this money should really go into cleaning up and freshening up. Also, please keep in mind, if you don't rent one of their boats, there really isn't much else to do there. No pool, no sandy area for sitting.
The staff was friendly. Porkys restaurant next door is average, nothing special, but convenient.
I do not plan to stay here again. This place is basically a fishing shack for men, women will be grossed out. Was disappointing.

We are very sorry that this guest had a disappointing stay with us. We are now under new ownership since May 1, 2014 & all of the issues mentioned in her review have either been rectified or are about to be. The sink in the picture has been replaced already, the carpets will be taken out & nice tile put in to replace it very soon. The deck is getting totally torn out next week & replaced. We have also replaced all the tvs in the resort with flat screens & also put them in the bedrooms too. We are painting all the buildings pretty tropical colors right now this week. We have free wireless Internet now. She wasn't really interested in the boat part but her hubby would like to know that we have already bought 3 new 4-stroke Yamaha engines for some of the boats. Lots more improvements on the list too. We are not a "fishing shack" for the guys! Many of our guests (male & female alike) love to fish & come to here to do that, but we also have many guests who come to snorkel, scuba dive & just cruise around enjoying our beautiful turquoise waters!
The Florida Keys in general isn't your typical touristy shopping type destination. It has an island feel & is pretty "laid back". We have some beautiful beaches - Bahia Honda State Park is not far away & is usually in the top 10 beaches for the USA. The Turtle Hospital is world famous & only a 1/2 mile from us. The Dolphin Research Center is only a few miles away & is one of the most popular places to visit. The famous Old Seven Mile Bridge is a couple of minutes away & has spectacular sunsets, plus is a great place to walk, jog or bicycle. We have some nice historical places to visit here in town too in addition to the bridge - Crane Point Hammock has great nature walks & is home to the Adderly House (one of the first houses built), plus Pidgeon Key Island is also worth a visit. Key West is only an hour away in the car for a nice day trip. Most people are glad to get back though after a hectic day down there! So, there really are a lot of nice things to do close by. That beautiful turquoise blue water certainly does call to a lot of people though!

Did everything on line. Wanted a Florida Keys fishing trip over 2014 spring break. Son is IT person with Plano ISD and I drive school buses for Wylie ISD. Selected Captain Pips over others responding to my requests for information because housing and fishing are in 1 package. Selected 3 day budget get-a-way. Am sure other captains are good guides as well, but had no idea what housing would be conveniently close to fishing boats. Lack of Wi Fi was not a problem as I enjoyed break from normal routine. Had cell phone to stay in touch with family. Highly recommend Captain Zach Willis as he worked very hard to find fish on 1st day and we caught 7 dolphin fish and 3 triple tail fish. Caught 7 yellow tail snappers on 2nd day. Would have caught more if we knew more about how to fish for them. Captain Zach is a patient captain who did not make us feel like dummies. Think boats were grounded day after we left due to high winds.

Room Tip: Only know of room we stayed in and were well pleased with it. Depending on your mobility, a ground f...

Got a deal on this hotel, location is great, staff is accommodating, and could have been a great stay except for the dog hair in the room, on furniture, and barking dog nearby. I cam for peace and quiet and am not demanding of the room except for cleanliness. I would not go back as my stay was ruined by the priority of dogs over guests (human that is). The only response is that they allow dogs so basically put up with them. Might be something that doesn't bother you but I like a clean room and quiet environment for my stay. Many other choices nearby so shop around before you come to this place. Bow, wow!

Thanks for taking the time to post your comments. I am a bit confused by your comments. We do not allow dogs at our resort. Perhaps this reviewer has us confused with another resort.

Purchase 2 days there via expedia which was very confusing as the price quoted was increased when taken from my credit card. Consequently we found it expensive given that I could have stopped at a top London hotel for the same price. The stairs to the second floor were steep and slippery with poor lighting at night. The headboard was not fitted properly and banged every time you move in bed . The shower tray leaked. It was possible to hear every word of the conversation in the adjacent room. Finally their is a constant drone of fishing boat engines throughout the night with crab boats coming in and out of the adjacent harbour. We cut our trip short as it was not possible to get a good nights sleep with the noise. Not recommend

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at Captain Pip's Marina & Hideaway. We appreciate your business and have used your comments to make future guest's stays even better. As I'm sure the reviewer is aware, when booking through services such as Expedia, the actual hotel has no control over what the customer is charged. The rates are set by services such as Expedia. In this case, the guest got an upgraded room for a very reasonable price -- more than $100 less than our rate card rate. We do share our harbor with commercial stone crab and lobster fishing boats. During their season, which runs from August through May, boats come and go frequently from sunrise to sunset, but never during the night. This commercial fishery is a big part of the Keys economy and part of daily life on our island. Some guests find it charming, while others might find it simply an annoyance. Remember, without those boats coming and going, visitors and residents would not be able to enjoy delicious stone crabs and lobster for dinner.

We stayed 3 nights in the Tree Top room. Very quiet and secluded place to stay, yet just off the highway. You can rent boats on site and Porky's Restaurant is next door. This is a no frills place with no wifi. We just walked over to Porky's and used there's. Full size fridge, microwave & toaster in room. The TV is very small, but you don't go to the key's to watch TV. Only an hour drive to Key West. We wished we would have just stayed and done things in Marathon instead.
We will definitely be back. Thanks for a great stay.

This is a great place to stay to spend a day or two fishing as part of a longer holiday down the Keys. This is the second time that I have visited Captain Pips. We normally reserve the use of a Boat and a Fishing Guide as part of our accommodation booking. On both occasions we have stayed in the Grouper Room. This is a reasonably large airy room with a comfortable bed. A little bit dated, but homely and charming. Everything is spotlessly clean, with good bedlinen and plenty of towels are provided. Although the Bathroom is relatively small, the Shower is large and is excellent. There is a large Fridge/ Freezer and Coffee/Tea Making machine in the room. There is a pleasant sheltered Garden area with views overlooking the private boat mooring pier. My Wife spent many hours reading in this quiet spot whilst I was out fishing. Captain Pips runs a fleet of well maintained and equipped boats and I was fortunate to be accompanied by a very good Guide Capt Zach Willis. We had a particularly successful day and caught a lot of very large Yellow Tail snappers, Capt Zach really knows his stuff ! - I hope that he will be available next time I visit. On an adjacent part of the property is Porky's Bar/Restaurant, This is a rather rustic and lively affair serving basket type meals, burgers and the like, Popular with the local fishing/boating community they seem to have live music every evening, we caught Dan Sullivan on a Thurs night who sings lively country music with amusing words, very good ! - a happy place altogether. Captain Pips Marina has a good web site http://captainpips.com/ which is well worth a look, We have found Ellie very friendly, competent and responsive to emails.
