Still being cleaned after hurricane damage but looking like it will soon reopen. Sans was super soft and the views are georgeous. The locals had start d to use it again.

We come for Thanksgiving each year and always bring our boat with us. We make at least two or three trips during the week out to the reef. It’s absolutely beautiful out there and there are tons of beautiful fish swimming around you. The lighthouse is a beautiful picture opportunity with the sun setting or rising in the background! Water is normally crystal clear and there are plenty of buoys to tie up to. If you don’t bring your boat, there are plenty of snorkeling excursions you can pay to take for around $30 a person. It’s a beautiful landmark for the Marathon area that everyone should experience!

Went there today, water was rolling less than foot waves but it is still cloudy, broken ropes are strung all over.
No color to see just gray and white. Hardly any fish as this reef was hit hard by Hurricane Irma unfortunately. Broken coral layers the bottom.
Friend of ours came up from a dive there and almost started crying as the reef is so damaged and scrubbed almost barren to what it used to be.
Went over to Ivory Wreck, same thing :(

Visited the reef with Spirit Snorkelling a well organised large boat. See my separate review. The water was warm and calm .There were numerous boats but there was plenty of room on the reef for everyone. The visibility was reduced by particulate matter. There was a high density of small reef fish. I didn't see any larger marine life. The coral was quite healthy with both hard and soft corals, not as good as the Tortugas or Indonesia but on a par with Belize and better than the Maldives in terms of the coral. The Sombrero Lighthouse is an impressive structure and worth a visit

You need to rent a boat or take a charter to the Sombrero lighthouse. It is a great spot for snorkeling and diving. For the beginner diver, it is really nice since there are fingers of channels from the lighthouse outward. It isn't too deep but great views of fish and plant life while able to see the top of the water. I highly recommend the site.
