“The Sandpiper...a step into the Keys of past”
Reviewed 25 January 2013

We didn't want to stay in Key West because of the crowds and parking. We decided to stay in Marathon, only 50 miles away. The Sandpiper is the Keys of the past. Six bikers rode to Marathon and stayed a The Sandpiper, very quaint, clean,a kitchen and quiet. The price was very reasonable. Friends stayed at another motel nearby and paid double our price.

Room Tip: Only 8 rooms...4 upstairs & 4 downstairs

Thanks ! We love the bikes! They fit into our parking lot so well.I am happy you enjoyed the Motel. Unfortunately we have had to increase our prices since your visit ( first time in 8 years ! ) But we still feel that the price is still reasonable and below everyone else. Thanks again and hope to see you next year! Anita

Stopped at the sandpiper on our way to key west. What a great find
Room was big and had all the stuff you needed if you were going to
stay a week nice litte kitchen with all the pots, pans and dishs you
could want. The price for the room was something you dont expect
in the keys. Will stop in again when in the area. Great place.

My wife and I have visited Marathon many times, and have often ridden our bikes by the Sandpiper Motel. The main thing that jumps out at you is its exotic atmosphere, almost like some of the motels in the jungles in South America that we've stayed at.

The Sandpiper is such a beautiful little motel that I'd been wanting to check it out for years, but we both love staying in the house boats at another location in Marathon. There's nothing like sleeping on a boat with that wave action, and you're so far from any highway noise. But this year their rates just about doubled, so the first thing that came to my mind was Sandpiper Motel.

The price is very reasonable, our room was clean with very nice decor, and the bed was comfortable. Other people have used the word 'quaint,' and yes I'd say that fits. There were no fleas, flies or anything else inside the room, and also nothing of any consequence outside. The kitchen is really fully furnished unless you are a gourmet chef who requires an oven. But you're on vacation, so why would you need that? The wireless internet is best accessed from your table just outside the door as you are enjoying an ice-cold beverage. You'd think the highway noise would be a problem, but you don't hear anything in your room. The manager, Anita, was very attentive to everything that we needed. Yes there are a couple of cats around, Swamp being the one I saw the most. I'm not a cat person, but before the end of our stay he and I were good friends. You probably don't want to let him into your room though.

Sandpiper is on the west end of the island, where you are close to Sombrero Beach, many nice water front restaurants and, of course, the 7-mile bridge where you can catch a perfect sunset almost every night.

If you're the sort of person who is spooked by the low rate and would prefer a sterile, cookie-cutter motel room that could be literally anywhere in the United States, then maybe you should check out the Holiday Inn Express at the other end of the island. But I didn't come down here to stay in a room without any character. We really enjoyed our 9 nights at the Sandpiper and will definitely come back.

Room Tip: Room 8 is the farthest from Hwy 1. Room 4 would be the next best.

A quaint little, and I mean little motel right on the OCean Highway in Marathon, FL. 8 rooms, 4 up and down each. 2 kitties that want to visit you and a balcony upstairs to sit on and enjoy the weather and use of the internet! Full cable/satellite TV service, kitchenette that I could have cooked in quite a few more days! Sweet stencils on walls and near conveniences and wonderful restaurants makes this a stay for less value! We stayed march 12-16, 3 night minimum during busy season. Spent 1 day driving the 50 minutes to Key West, enjoying the sites and coming back to sanity and less people! Anita is a honey and gives you everything you will need! This is a KEEPER!! Don't throw this catch back on your ocean side visit to the keys.

Room Tip: Ask for the room upstairs and in the back. there is some road noise but we had a very peaceful visit...

I travel with a friend and my dog..and we spent a week in this motel, nice, clean, quiet and the manager , Anita, is a wonderful person and very helpful.
You have to share the place with some friendly cats and it was a pleasant and restful stay in spite of US 1.

Room Tip: Rooms on 2th floor and little balcony

Looks like a small place, although the people were great and very friendly. The motel was centrally located to great restaurants and shopping. The owner is a guy named Bobby how is very hands on and is very helpful. Rates are very reasonable and the room comes with a fridge, stove, and sink. Basically a little kitchen. Overall it was a cheap and great place to stay.
