“Best place to chill out”
Reviewed 15 May 2008

We decided to book after reading reviews in Trip Adviser and we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we felt very welcome. Our rooms were cleaned every day and our beds made. Other guests were very friendly and most had been holidaying at the Gulf View for many years - we could see why. The pool and the garden area were lovely and very tranquil. Really can't recommend this place enough and hope to return soon.

We went down to Marathon for a friend's wedding and stayed at both the Gulfview and Tranquility Bay (where the wedding was) and honestly, even though Tranquility Bay was very high end with beautifully appointed rooms, I enjoyed our stay at the Gulfview a lot more. The staff was so friendly and accommodating and the property was just gorgeous!! It was incredibly relaxing and had a very personal feel to it. Tranquility Bay was beautiful but very corporate feeling which isn't what I think of when I think "Keys" and the tiki bar there closed at 9:00!! Even on the weekend! It was a nice resort but it didn't have the same relaxed feel of the Gulfview. The rooms at the Gulfview were clean and comfortable and there are gas grills all around the property so you can do a little grilling out under the palms or by the water. The pool is huge and overlooks the Gulf with giant sweeping palms- really it just looks like paradise when you look out from there. The landscaping is amazing, there are so many varieties of flowering plants and vines with thick lush grass all around, it's truly beautiful. The hammocks are wonderful to lay in... I could have stayed forever! We also had a good time taking out the canoes which are free for the guests to use whenever. Susan and the staff at Gulfview were just wonderful and they really put a lot of work into making the property a little slice of paradise. I highly recommend the Gulfview. If you're the kind of person that needs structure and designer soap in your room, go to Tranquility Bay but if you're the kind of person that goes to the Keys to listen to the wind blow through the palms while you're swinging in a hammock and just like a nice clean place to lay your head at night with a really friendly staff, then the Gulfview is an amazing find!! Thanks for the great stay Susan!

This place was wonderful. We were used to the business of St.Pete beaches and we wanted to visit the Keys.It was quiet, beautifully landscaped,so tropical, and the room was clean.
We had one of the guest rooms, and we had a deck right outside the door, housekeeping came every morning.
We could have our wine at night overlooking the water and then just walk a little ways down the road to the restaurant, that had great mussels and conch chowder and fritters.
We highly recommend the Gulf View for a tropical, clean place to stay.
As sombody stated earlier, there are not many beaches, but we went to Sombreo Beach, not too far away and it was great, right on the Atlantic and not too crowded.
The owners are right there to answer any questions you might have.
It's not fancy, but it is beautiful.

What our family of two adults and two small children loved about Gulf View Waterfront Resort was the tropical garden, the pool, the parrots and other birds and animals and the closeness to the gulf - GREAT -(however the water is dirty and smelly so you can't swim in it).

We stayed in two different units due to some mistake. The first unit was GREAT. Very clean and nicely furnished, and it even had a dishwasher - very much appreciated. Obviously this was above average beacause the unit #12 where we probably were supposed to have stayed all three nights wasn't what we had expected. We only had two kitchen chairs so two could sit at a time. It could also need some painting and perhaps some more decoration to add cosyness and feelo more like own home. This unit felt overpriced.

Our opinion may be affected of stays at the extraordinary good Cocobelle Resort in Ft Lauderdale and Caribe Cove resort in Kissimmee.

No noise was disturbing us. Otherwise OK.

  • Liked — The garden, the gulf view, the pool and the animals.
  • Disliked — 2nd unit didn't match expectations.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit (#14 I think) 3/14 - 3/16. The unit was simple but clean and served our needs. The bathroom was TINY however. Your knees literally hit the wall while on the toilet - very hard to get up and down! The shower head was forehead high and I am not all that tall. The bathrooms in several of the 1 bedroom units (we asked to see them) were much better laid out .

The grounds are indeed lush and very nice. Plenty of hammocks, tiki huts and grills. The pool was old but in good service.

At almost $200 a night, during prime season, we were glad to get the unit and found it convenient for what we wanted to do over the long weekend. I will say that for $200 a night, the rooms could have been a bit more special and that bathroom really needs to be ripped out and re-done - which will never happen.

My family would stay there again but go for the 1 bedroom units with the better bathroom layout.

  • Liked — Relatively close to Bahia Honda State Park. Better than hotel rooms.
  • Disliked — Bathroom layout was terrible and hard to use.

My husband and I booked a room at this hotel for 2 nights (before a cruise out of Miami) We selected this hotel based on the reviews we had read and I'm glad we did. It was all about the pool, the kayaks, and the dolphin research center next door. Our goal was to experience the Keys and I felt like we did that. We thought our room was quiet, however, we didn't have a sunny room. It was dark because of it's position being on the bottom floor with a deck up above. We were out of the room most of the day anyway, so that was no big deal.
As someone said below, the room is very modest in amenities. I was disappointed at first. The room had all the "kitchen" things although a little bit scattered (the microwave is over by the bathroom) but this place just seemed to grow on us. I would recommend that the owner add a few simple things (like salt and pepper, sugar, coffee packets). We arrived in the afternoon after a long slow drive, and didn't realize that there were no stores nearby. The nearest store is 8 miles away, which is actually not bad, but the traffic was heavy and we were getting tired.
In the morning, coffee was set under a tree outside, which I thought was very unique and handy. Again, this was modest but worked. I actually liked it. The only problem was that when I went out one morning to get a cup, the pot was empty. Oh well, you snooze, you lose!
The pool was just awesome. Your body adjusts to the cooler temperature almost immediately, once you get wet. They had little float toys and I enjoyed myself immensely while my husband enjoyed the sun. We were there during a very warm time, 85 degrees. It was awesome.
We heard whistles blows coming from somewhere in the background, and when we were out in the canoe, we discovered the whistling was from the dolphin trainers who were doing shows for visitors. (the owner told us about the research center next door and recommended we take a boat around the bend to watch, thank you!) We had a pretty good view from our little canoe. The ocean water was fairly calm because of the beautiful bay this property is situated on. Also, like most of the Keys, the water is very shallow and clear, so you can see all the rocks below and any sea life that you might come upon. We saw some sort of ray from the shoreline.
The canoes are extremely convenient and easy to access. The boat ramp is just a few feet from the pool and it was so fun to just go out and push one a few feet into the water and voila.. we were boating.
Parking was absolutely easy and handy.
The bathroom was adequate and small and it was clean. The bed was very firm. I appreciated that the floor was tile, not carpet.
I wouldn't hesitate to return to this resort. Calling it a resort seems a little overstated, however.

  • Liked — The bay location and the canoes
  • Disliked — Kitchen could have been stocked a little better.

We stayed at the Gulfview from 4/6 - 4/8. The rooms were very clean, and the landscaping is beautiful. The folliage is quite diverse with lots of coconut palms, banana trees, & pineapple plants. Mike gave us a terrific tour. We also tried out the kayaks and spent plenty of time at the pool. We enjoyed the coffee & tea available outside under the tiki hut in the mornings. The owners were very friendly. We'd love to come back and stay longer.
