“Very fun ranch experience for the family!”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

We just spent this past weekend at WGRR and had a wonderful time! The 2-bedroom Saddle Ridge cabin we stayed in was clean, spacious and easily fit our family of 7. There was room for even 4 more people with another pull-out couch and Murphy Bed. It worked out well to bring in our own food. Our kids couldn't get over the buffalo field right outside our cabin! Very peaceful! The rodeo was the highlight for sure! For all ages. The petting zoo was also a highlight. As we were driving away, our kids were already asking when we could go back.

This resort was so much more fun than we anticipated. I read the book, "A Land Remembered," and came across this resort as I was searching for information on the location online. I booked the Ultimate Family Adventure for a weekend March 28-30 and two grandparents, one parent and an eight-year-old all enjoyed the experience. Not the camping types, we had a room in the lodge with two queen beds with excellent bedding, conveniently located next to the Adventure Park, saloon, rodeo, stables, petting zoo, and heated pool and spa. Despite a treacherous thunderstorm Saturday afternoon, all of us are raving about the variety of activities and the fun we had. Be advised, there are many additional charges, such as a fee for the Adventure Park's bungee jumpers, zipline, rock wall, miniature golf, etc., but the youngster was thoroughly entertained and the staff couldn't have been more pleasant. We would recommend renting a golf cart, even though it's a bit pricey. It just makes getting around this vast property a little easier. I never would have guessed how much we enjoyed the rodeo! Great fun for the whole family. And the dancing outside the saloon afterwards was a blast! We took about 200 pictures during our stay, so you can just guess how many things we did and how much fun it was. Our only complaints were that the horseback riding trail ride was very boring; just nose to tail and no interesting scenery, other than the bulls from the rodeo grazing around, and the food was mediocre, at best. You are rather captive in this remote area, so you're at the mercy of the food offerings here. Fortunately we packed lots of snack food and didn't starve, but can't recommend the breakfast buffet or the barbecue after the hayride. As we were leaving, our young one admitted, "This was better than the cruise" which we paid a fortune for during Christmas break.WGRR isn't fancy, but it sure is fun!

Room Tip: Our regular room in the lodge was quite comfortable for 3 adults and one child, and it was so conven...

Unfortunately there are plenty of things they could approve upon. Below find the good, the bad and the ugly...

Rooms:
Recently renovated rooms were comfortable and clean. AC blew cold. Beds were comfortable but small. Cute western decor but it made the rooms rather dark. Pillows were lumpy and walls are thin. I could hear every word our neighbors said. Large flat screen TV is nice except when we lost signal due to weather.

Property:
The property is expansive with of the activities are contained within a short walk of one another. If the weather is nice skip the golf cart and walk, it's good for you! We were disappointed to see how pedestrian unfriendly the place was though. There are no sidewalks and you are left to walk in the road or in the grassy ditch. The pool is a major let down. I had visions of a lagoon or resort style pool but instead we got a motel pool. It's decent size and heated but not fancy. What a shame that they don't have a nicer pool with possibly even a splash pad for the kids.

Dining:
As others have said the only real restaurant on property has VERY limited hours. The food off the menu was a disappointment. I tried the ribs and the fried chicken but the food tasted cheap. The ribs were overcooked and tough and the chicken bland. The buffets were a little better- for $10 the breakfast buffet is satisfactory and the dinner buffet for $15 was better than the food off the menu. Over all though the food was expensive and tasted of low quality. The general store sells pizza and sandwiches. We had breakfast here one day when the Smokehouse Grill was closed. It was OK but again the food all seemed massed produced and low quality.

Activities:
Horseback riding- I ended up being the only person signed up for the 2-hour ride and got a private ride. It was very nice not riding nose to tail as in the regular rides. We saw beautiful scenery and wildlife. A tip: wear bug spray. I didn't even think about it but the flies were pretty brutal.
Adventure Park- Most of the activities are clustered in the Adventure Park consisting of bungee trampolines, rock climbing wall, mechanical bull, miniature golf and the zip line. Firstly, the website says the zip line is for "all ages" but the minimum weight is 65lbs. This is false advertising as I don't know many "all ages" kids who are 65lbs. My 6yo certainly wasn't. We bought him the discount armband ($30+) which allowed him unlimited access to the activities here for the day. Except the zip line, which he would have gotten two rides. Since he was underweight they did allow us to use his zip line rides, which worked out. The zip line by itself costs $12 per ride, by the way, and is in no way worth it! He did spend a lot of time on Thunder the mechanical bull and all the adults enjoyed watching the kids get thrown. The mini golf is fun, was clean and looked new. The Saloon is right behind the Adventure Park but sells only drinks, no food at all. BRING YOUR OWN food and drinks.
Skeet and Archery- For $30 you get use of a shotgun and 25 rounds. If you bring your own shotgun and shells you only pay $10. The staff working was very patient and accommodating. Often there was only one person running the place- ringing people up, pushing the skeet button, helping with archery so the wait could be long. We lucked out and got in without much wait. My son enjoyed the archery, at $5, was pretty cheap. They do not let you shoot crossbows, so leave yours at home.
Rodeo- By far the coolest part of the weekend was the rodeo every Saturday at 7pm. The arena is clean and well lit. The action flows from beginning to end and has a awesome patriotic theme and references to Jesus. The bull riding was not joke- those bulls were wild. We watched one poor guy get thrown into a fence and catch his leg. The ladies come out and do stunt riding and barrel racing. Get your kids out for the FREE calf scramble.
Hayride/dinner- canceled due to rain and they refused to refund our money because they said the $20 we paid was for the dinner, the hayride was complimentary. I thought this was pretty lousy customer service. They should have rescheduled the hayride for the next day. The food, BTW, was NOT worth $20/pp.
Petting Farm- make sure to visit this FREE activity. Lots of friendly, well kept animals.

Service:
Staff was mostly friendly is a country kind of way. The only staff that was not on point were some of the young workers at the Adventure Park who had to be prodded off of their phones to run the activites. Also, at one point we needed first aid and were sent to an empty building. I had to walk to the front desk where they called in help. When help did arrive they were missing what we needed from their first aid kit and had to send for that. They were all nice but in a true emergency I'm not sure that would matter if they could provide quick assistance! Also, housekeeping was very stingy with toilettires. One small bottle of shampoo and conditioner for a family of four for 4 days?! Check in took quite a while with the two girls overwhelmed. They should have called for backup. Also, check in not until 4pm and checkout 10am?! Why the limited hours?

Value:
Overall the least impressive thing is the value. Just about everything costs, and it's not cheap. Food quality sucked for the cost. Only a handful of activites were worth the cost: rodeo, archery, skeet (if you had your own stuff). A few free things are nice: motel-ish pool, petting farm, fishing with cane poles. We may go again but really you can do everything in two days. But, it'll cost you...

Tips:
-Bring your own EVERYTHING. You cannot have enough snacks. The mini fridge is ample enough to fit lots of cold stuff plus you have cabinet space, dishes and a full sized coffee pot. Make sure you bring way more food and drinks than you think you'll need because once your out there the closest store, a Walmart, is 25 miles away. And you don't want to but food at the General Store which will cost 3-4 times retail.
-They will light a fire in the pit nightly. Bring your own skewers and stuff to roast (marshmallows, s'mores stuff, hot dogs)
- Bring your cowboy hats and boots. Everyone is wearing them. :)
- If you are there Sunday at 10am make sure to take in the chapel service, if you are so inclined. Casual dress and all are welcome. We heard it called "Cowboy Church". lol

Room Tip: Lodge rooms are recently renovated and surprisingly quiet. We faced the pool and had no trouble with...

We’re thrilled you enjoyed our rodeo and petting farm. We do have specific check-in and check-out times. However, you are able to request early check-in and late check-out time at the front desk. I can't imagine a more laid back and comfortable place to spend a weekend with family. We had six adults and two children with us altogether. We had three rooms, two of which were adjoining suites. We opened the door up between the two and had a VERY comfortable area to stay in. The rooms were clean and had fully functional kitchens. I can't even rate the food at the restaurant or store because we ended up enjoying the hot dogs and burgers we brought with us on the cook stove directly out back. Horse back riding was relaxing and fun. All activities ended up being booked solid, so if you plan to do ANYTHING at all, book it early. Tip for visitors, rent a golf card as soon as you get there. If you arrive on Friday night, don't wait till Saturday morning. Everything will be booked. Those wranglers that took us on the trail ride overbooked and working their tails off but were very pleasant and knowledgeable. They even sacrificed their typical lunch break to sneak our group out for a 12:00 appointment. They said they took 92 people for horseback rides that day. Air boating was ok at best, but again they were so overbooked and we were so late in the day you could tell everybody at the Marina was just exhausted. I must say, however, that the highlight of the entire visit was the Championship Rodeo. It was superbly ran, and if I could possibly critique it at all would only be to say I wanted more! One more round of riders (like a consolation round) would have been perfect. The place was VERY patriotic and VERY appreciative of the US armed forces. Overall, I couldn't possibly have asked for a more enjoyable weekend with family. The kids had a BLAST on the zipline and rock wall. They were so exhausted by the end of the night they fell asleep on their feet.

Room Tip: We had suites 320 and 321 and they were excellent. Central to everything, quiet, they had a charcoal...

Just left WGRR we had such a great time we are sad to leave. We did the RV camping. The camping section was a pretty big area with water and electric for campers. You were surrounded by horses which was awesome. The showers always fairly clean and warm. We got there Wednesday night and the adventure park was open but only for two hours. The adventure parks includes zip lining, bungee jumping, thunder the mechanical bull, and rock climbing wall. It's pretty awesome the only downside is most of the activities cost quite a bit for a adv park pass 39 for adults 29 for kids. During the week not much to do everything's closed even the restaurant. I wouldn't come again until probably Thursday night for a long weekend. The saloon has an awesome band and they have line dancing which was pretty fun. We met so many new people everybody just partying together. There isn't much in the area come prepared. A box of graham crackers $8.09 seriously expensive. The restaurant open on weekends was reasonably priced. Don't recommend swamp buggy ride unless there is mud but the petting zoo one of the best I've been to the animals love the attention so friendly and loving I was able to actually play with a baby goat. We are definately coming back!! Can't wait. we are owners at another WG resort so you will be eligible for discounts which helps on the outrageous prices.

My wife set this up for our family, and we spent March 15-16 on the property. The ranch is spread out and I was told the roads were recently repaved.

The glampers were just past the campers, but there is a chained gate separating the glampers. Obviously they want to keep the campers out of the glamper area. There are about 12 glamper cabins and they are nice. On the front you have a screened porch with rocking chairs, and then inside they had 2 twin beds for our kids, and one queen/full for us. Just like the photos online. All are air mattresses, but they were comfortable. There is a microwave and a mini frig in the room. Soap and towels were in the room, but the running water was outside in a central area. We didn't need the water, but did use the mini frig.
The bathroom is in what I would call a mobile home set up as individual bathrooms for the glampers only. We had a key to our bathroom which was only for us. It was huge, clean, and soap and towels were provided. Seemed like each glamper had their own assigned bath with a key.

We ate dinner at the restaurant which was good. We brought cereal for breakfast but they provided coffee and Danish in the central glamper area. Bring snacks with you.

The entertainment highlight was the rodeo Saturday night. What an experience watching so many children chasing the calf's tail to win a prize. There were so many kids there. The bull riding was something I had not seen in years. Most of all we loved how they celebrate America, and the love of God and country we share. The stands were full, and we were told get there by 7:15 or you wont get a seat. They were right as it was packed. The MC was GREAT! First class. Wish we would have had time for the church service sunday.
Our kids tried fishing but no luck at the pond. The animal farm was great- our kids got to help feed a calf too. Both of our kids tried archery for the first time- the workers there were great!
Finally there is a campfire at a central location for the glampers- the kids cooked their marshmellows- we were given a package of them with smore ingredients upon check in (we brought extra marshmellows with us which is a good idea since their gift doesn't include that many).
The only downside was some glampers were singing late by the campfire. The music was nice not obnoxious, but having small kids we have to go to bed early. Hey we were camping so this is not their fault.
Overall we would recommend this experience here!

We were attending a wedding weekend being held at the River Ranch. When we called to make the room reservation, about 6 weeks prior to the event, we were told the time to book for the discounted wedding rate was expired and if we wished to come, it would be $600 per night!! For a room with 2 full-sized beds, not even queen sized beds, because apparently those rooms were all gone. WHAT???? After MANY phone calls to various Westgate personnel, wedding planners, and River Ranch's event planning staff, that was finally straightened out & we got the room at the correct rate. All I kept thinking once we got there was, "They wanted $600 a night for THIS? They must be joking." The room was clean, I will give it that, however, you could tell it had been recently upgraded because there were still holes in the wall where towels racks and curtain rods had been changed out. It was also extremely dark. In an attempt to get more light into the room, we actually took off all of the dark western motif lamp shades and used bare light bulbs. As a family traveling with two teenagers of the opposite sex, we requested a cot. Nope. No can do, they don't have cots, so we had to bring our own air mattress (Please keep $600 PER NIGHT in mind.) Once we checked in, the young lady at the counter couldn't even show us on a map where our room was, she had to ask someone else. We were given an activity sheet and when we asked about making reservations for those activities, we were told we didn't need them on the weekends, just go on over to what you want to do. So, on Saturday morning, we went to go Skeet shooting. Once we arrived, we were told there were no available times without a reservation and they were booked solid from people that had reserved space 1-2 days prior. So, we tried archery. Same story. Along with swamp buggy rides and airboat rides. We had to settle for the petting zoo and putt-putt golf. ($600 PER NIGHT, remember that?) On the second day there, after spending the morning attempting to find activities, we came back to our room in the afternoon to get ready for the family member's wedding, and we discovered that the maid had been there. The service consisted of making the beds, laying new towels on the bathroom counter and TURNING OFF OUR AIR CONDITIONER. WHAT???? 85 degrees in central Florida and she turned off the A/C? Why would anyone do that? There was a small sink in our room, and that was left as we left it, with coffee cups in it, so apparently for $600 PER NIGHT, you also wash your own dishes. She did not leave new hotel sized shampoo or conditioner either, and no new soap. If you want additional hygiene items beyond what they give you on the first day, you have to go to the General Store and buy them...($600 per night.)
Once you get to the store, they only sell Pepsi products, so for those of us that think Pepsi tastes like a Coke that has been opened and left out to go flat, well, you're out of luck. And don't even get me started on the prices. Outrageous. You're miles from nowhere in this place and they know it, so they've got you over a barrel if you need anything.
I wouldn't go back to that place if someone paid ME $600 a night to do it.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. We regret to hear the complications you encountered during your stay. Our room rates are based upon availability and there may have been an issue upon booking because there are deadlines when booking group reservations. We hope our staff was able accommodate your needs and we apologize if you had any misunderstanding of this. In regards to our activities, most of our activities at Westgate River Ranch must be pre-scheduled at least a day in advance. Being such a popular resort, we have guests that specifically visit our resort for our activities so we ask our guests to make advance reservations to schedule accordingly. As a timeshare resort, our housekeeping schedule does run a little differently as we provide light mid-week cleanings. However, our staff will be more than happy to provide you with supplies if requested. We hope you allow us the opportunity to show you what our resort truly has to offer in the future.
