If you are in Lakeland and do not go to Florida Southern College and walk around or take a tour, shame on you. Lovely area. Lovely campus. And you do nto have to be an architecture fan to appreciate FLW. It is especially nice how the newer buildings blend with the original FLW designs.

We took a tour of this campus for my son who is a senior in high school currently. This is an amazing campus. The staff is so attentive and can tell really cares about all students!
The buildings are kept very well and the landscaping is all done well. It over looks a lake and feels extremely safe. If you are looking at smaller private FL colleges it is worth the time to take a tour!
If you just want to see a beautiful area in FL on a lake with architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright it is a beautiful walk around!

Central Florida abounds in attractions, so this collection of nearly a dozen Frank Lloyd Wright buildings at Florida Southern University in Lakeland, Fla., is easy to miss. However, if you are any kind of architecture fan, this is a delightful opportunity to go off the beaten path and learn some interesting Florida history as well as view the architect's vision of a college setting... with lab buildings, library, observatory, and other types of buildings designed at the peak of Wright's career during the Great Depression and built in the 30s and 40s. Tours can be arranged (ours was a totally private tour led by a docent with unbelievably extensive knowledge of the campus and Wright's history) and there are also booklets for self-guided tours available in the visitor's center. We paid a minimal fee to visit the museum/guest house and made a donation for the tour. It would probably be good to call in advance and verify current hours and availability of a guide and group tour times for the day you want to go; you could enjoy a visit in 1-2 hours but, with a tour, 2-3 hours is a better time allotment.

As a note: Lakeland is lovely and kind of an adventure in "Old-Florida' on its own. Ask your tour guide for a restaurant recommendation.

The campus of Florida Southern College has the largest collection of FLW structures in one place. It is a beautiful array of buildings, esplanades and grounds. The college is in the process of restoring many of the buildings, and they have just added one new building - a Usonian house that is part of the visitor’s center.

The docents are well versed in Wright architecture and the history of the campus. I would recommend the in depth tour if you can make the time. The tours have a fee.

This is where my appreciation of the genius of Frank Lloyd Wight was kindled many years ago as a student at FSC.

We are huge fans of FL Wright and had visited Taliesin in Arizona, but never come to Fl Southern even though we live in Florida. It was beautiful. I hope they will continue to renovate the property back to it's former beauty.
