On our last trip to Madeira we were determined to do a wave runner (jet ski, sea-do, whatever you choose to call it) rental and did plenty of research since the rentals are a dime a dozen. We finally came across Woody's and it was clear we made the right choice!
We got booked with no trouble, and for the best rate we'd found on the pass. Woody is an honest guy and his rates are fair and simple, you'll see some places are set on up selling you or aren't transparent about all the fees, not these guys! If you're under 25 you need to fill out a quick safety test for a temporary license. It costs $3 (per attempt) so be sure to read their safety sheet thoroughly before writing it. Not terribly difficult. If you can't pass, you really shouldn't be renting. All the rest was standard waivers and they only require a credit card number, not an actual hold.
Nate got us set up on the actual wave runners. He had a great attitude and always made sure we had a great time while being safety conscious and informative. He gave us a thorough overview and made sure we were familiar with all the features and operations. It was our first time and we felt very comfortable using them.
We got the 130hp models and they had plenty of kick! Be sure to be courteous and alert to other boaters especially in the channel. Keep you speed down until you're in the gulf and be mindful of the swimming areas, they are patrolled.
Once we were out though, we had an amazing time! Such a rush! We were just ripping across the water and were very impressed with how much power they had. Easy enough to control and very responsive controls. In our hour, we made it south to the boundary point about a mile down, then north all the way the 6 miles up to the pier and back. That brought us back just about at the hour marker. If you go all the way to the pier, make sure you leave enough time.
I have sunglasses designed for use on the water and even they had a hard time standing up to the waves. Don't know what I would have done without them though! If you plan on getting any high speeds, bring glasses. Though we saw some couples come back without a drop on them, to each their own!
One thing I can't emphasize enough: if you don't apply power, you don't have any directional control! Be careful maneuvering in/out of the dock or around others as you need to give it power to steer. We saw several close calls because of this.
Overall, highly recommend you visit Woody and Nate, you won't regret it! Great value, great experience, lots of fun!
We also bought one of their t-shirts for Grandpa, so he's now giving them some free advertising in his nice yellow shirt!
Thanks again guys!
