the neat buildings are now in the water, off the beach, and may even be covered completely in a few years! it's a great ride to cape romano, as you can take the back water there from caxambas pass and then head home on the gulf side if it's not too rough. great beach!

Over the years this has become a more popular place to visit. However, this past year the building has become separated from the mainland. In essence this adds to the mystery of the structure. Not many people anchor here anymore since you can't walk through the domed house. This makes it a place to find a little bit of solitude. Not a lot of shelling but a nice place to sit and listen to the waves hitting the shore.

Cape Romano is a cape at the southern end of Caxambas Island, just south of Marco Island and northwest of the Ten Thousand Islands in Collier County, Florida. That only means that we have 9999 islands to explore. We had a terrific time while kayaking/camping there last week.

This boat access only strip of beach has several 60's "igloo" style buildings, which once were someone's home. Google the story. Anyway, they are now standing in the Gulf...soon to be history. Worth the boat ride.

Cape Romano has it all for Marco visitors, and even full-timers. First is the iconic dome house, now partially submerged, after decades of storms and beach erosion. Very interesting history. Second, it is a very good fishing spot, with many gulf species cruising the flats, ranging from pompano, redfish to sharks, including the abundant bonnet heads to the bigger-boy bulls and blacktips. Boater beware though: the tidal current is quite strong at the point, and there are numerous shallow sand bars and reefs that are unmarked, some of which shift considerably with time. Watch the locals and tour guides to see the safe passages.
