“Sandur Heritage”
Reviewed 26 February 2014

We recently enjoyed the winter package offer of 2 nights stay in Deluxe rooms in Shiva Vilas palace hotel at Sandur. The place is a little remote and about 300 kms from Bangalore and 442 kms from Hyderabad. The National highway and state road up to Bellary are good. The mining company trucks have raped and wrecked the 20 kms stretch of road between Torangallu and Sandur. It is advisable to take Bellary- Hospet -Sandur road, which is 30 kms longer but in better condition. If the access roads get better, this palace hotel is a luxurious and peaceful getaway. The 3 suites and 9 Deluxe rooms are large and well appointed with private sit outs and modern comforts. Swimming pool is clean and large lawns are good for private parties. Spa facility can be enjoyed with one day prior appointment. There are Activity rooms for children with lots of games, a Board room, a Billiard room, a library, 2 private temples within the palace, Durbar hall museum and vintage cars museum to explore.
Mr. Sameer and Mr Joseph, along with other polite staff ensure warm hospitality, with great service and tasty food.
The nearby Nari Halla along with Narasimha swamy honda (gorge) surrounded by green hills is scenic. The Palace Trust is running Sandur Kushal kala kendra providing marketing development for skillful Lambani embroidered textiles, wood and stone carving.

UNESCO world heritage site Hampi, via Hospet is 40 kms away and is good for a day trip. Tungabhadra Dam and Daroji Sloth bear sanctuary are other nearby attractions. Kraunch giri Kumaraswamy temple built by Chalukya and later by Rashtrkutas, inside Swamimalai forest is 10 kms away.

Located at Sandur about 40 km from the World Heritage Site of Hampi, is this wonderful palace where one is treated like royalty. With it's luxurious accommodation and unrivalled service it is truly a 'must do' for all travellers to South India. Quite apart from visiting Hampi and staying at this palace, the Shivavilas Palace is itself a destination. I would seriously recommend it to everyone seeking an affordable 'Royal' experience.

We took a road trip to Hampi with a couple of friends at stayed here...absolutely loved the amazing service and the great food. Sameer and Joseph took great care of us and we were treated like royalty...It was a throw back to lazy summers and wide open days and the setting was just perfect....definitely going back. The onll drawback was the road to Sandur from Bellary...but we liked it so much we will brave the roads again.

I had visited Shivavilas Palace on 4th & 5th Oct 13 as a part of my Hampi Trip. I would seriously suggest place if you would like to experience the feel of Palace and a part of Royal Family. It is located at Sandur about 40 kms away from Hampi and has been now maintained by Heritage groups of Hotel chain from a year ago. Drive to Sandur is a bit bumpy and rough roads as its located in the mid of the mining valley and not well maintained. But the valley has a beautiful serine lush green view and would enjoy every look of it. Palace has a spectacular view and very well maintained by the staff. The rooms are amazing and each room has its own beauty. Food is also good and they have a wide spread apart from there set Menu. The Manager Mr. Joseph and his staff are very kind & humble. They will assist you for any type of information/requests and you can expect the best hospitality. Its is the best place to break out and to relax and have peace of mind away from the busy work-life.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms, Maharani rooms on the 1st floor

We were looking for reasonably good accommodation near Hampi and came across this place by chance and decided to go there (we were driving down from Bangalore anyway so the 40 odd kms to Hampi would be no big deal).
Once we got to the Palace, everything about the place was so spectacular (the Palace itself, the grounds, the hills around Sandur) that we decided to postpone going to Hampi to some other time and spent all our time in Shivavilas!
We were initially given a beautiful 'deluxe room' with a huge balcony but after dinner (the food is really good too) we were told that the staff are very sorry but there is something wrong with AC in the room (we hadn't noticed anything wrong with it) so would we mind moving to the Maharaja Suite. We said we wouldn't mind and moved. We thought the room was huge (large room + bathroom & big balcony) and the suite is enormous (large room + large sitting room + dressing room + huge bathroom + private corridors along two sides of the room with stunning views)!
So the rooms are amazing, the service is excellent (Taj+), the views are breathtaking and the managers are really nice. We generally lazed around the palace (swimming pool, steam room, museum, vintage cars, billiards room, library etc. etc.) and then went and looked at an opencast manganese mine in the afternoon (a SUV was organised to take us there as the roads approaching the mine would have been too much for the car). The weather was very pleasant and the whole place was lush green.
This wonderful place is just about 300 kms from Bangalore (5 hour drive since most of it is on NH4 and NH13) and is the absolute perfect weekend getaway! [We took the Kudligi to Sandur road off NH13 to get there and our poor sedan struggled with the mining-truck damaged road but on the way out we went the other way which is Sandur to Hospet (which would also be the road one takes to go to Hampi and back) and that was superb]

Room Tip: Some careful planning has gone into the entire renovation project so it is hard to decide what the b...

Loved our stay here! We were in Sandur visiting the SKKK for some business work and were staying at a nearby hotel that seemed quite shady. We knew of the Palace but because of the high rates were not staying here even though we were two women who should have been concern about her safety rather than money. However, thanks to our friends at SKKK we got a good rate at the palace and the staff was AMAZING! The place was amazing, the service was amazing, the rooms were amazing. It was my first time staying at a "palace" so I was blown away by everything. It was beautifully decorated and beautifully taken care of. My sister and I were the only ones staying and even though that was not safe, we never felt unsafe! The staff took extremely good care of us. The food was catered to our needs. They even arranged a car for a day trip to Hampi. Our only con was the driver on our trip to Hampi. He was definitely shady. If you do happen to be going on this trip, please just make sure to have a good driver, especially if you are women. He did not misbehave but he did go EVERYWHERE we went in Hampi. We paid for him to go into each of the structures. I dont know why we did but he just seemed to tag along and we didn't really feel comfortable telling him to stay back. It was awkward and at the end he dropped us at the train station but wouldn't stay with us until the train came. He wanted a tip as well when we knew we didn't need to pay him tip ON TOP of what he was already getting paid. Anyways, that didn't ruin our experience of the Palace. The Manager checked on us throughout our trip. He truly did his job beyond needed. We would definitely go back!
