Just returned from a 5 day Shearings holiday self drive stay we were given a very nice large room and found food to be good most nights. entertainment put on every night while there suppose due its isolated position a lot of the guests on a Shearings coach without their own transport. Nice clean swimming pool and fitness centre + sauna and steam room my only complaint was the bar prices £5.60 for a glass of white wine from the pump on the counter I don't pay that in the centre of Manchester. Apart from that a great stay for what it cost us and would have no hesitation staying there again.

It was great to read your comments on our hotel and in particular that you plan to re visit us in the future.
You'll be pleased to know that we now offer expertly selected, high quality 'Wine of the Season' at a price I'm sure you'll find remarkably competitive.
We all look forward to welcoming you back on your return.

Arriving for a three night stay at the Eden, we were delighted to find a large and pleasantly furnished bedroom. As it was very cold outside the heating was switched on in anticipation of our arrival, which I thought was a nice touch. The hospitality tray was adequately filled with tea and coffee, but as usual, very little milk. The water was hot at all times and the towells clean and soft. The three course evening meal was quite pleasant and the entertainment, entertaining. The bed at this hotel was the best one I have ever slept in at an hotel, so a pleasant night's sleep was guaranteed. The staff were at all times cheerful and helpful and couldn't have been nicer.Only one small quibble, there was only Wi-Fi in the public rooms and not in the bedrooms.

Room Tip: Room 15 was our favourite!

Great news as well…You’ll be pleased our Wi Fi does now extend to the rooms after a few minor technical issues were resolved.

We look forward to seeing you again.

What a good place to have a lovely weekend. We had a really nice room very clean and the girls came in every day to do the beds and replenish the tea and coffee etc. The menu is of a very good standard and well cooked -- except the scrambled eggs , dont know what was used but everone said they were yuk. Always large potions so never felt hungry this place is very good value for money. The hotel has a nice pool etc for relaxing. They also had entertainment on Fri, Sat and Sunday the one big problem was the bar prices -- very dear -- so much so that we went to a nearby working mens club (also with entertainment) where things were a more Normal price. WHY do hotels overprice thier drink and drive people away ? Our party of 20 spent a load of money that weekend and I'm sure the social club was glad of it, and they made us very welcome. Lots to do nearby including Beamish and spending some time in Durham itself. I will go back to the Eden Arms as the people were lovely and the staff in the dining room were Brilliant thanks again

Room Tip: we were in room 11 nice and it overlooked the front of the hotel, and we had No noise .

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our hotel.
Our aim is to be consistent in the quality of our breaks, so it’s great to hear that you know your stay is always going to be comfortable and pleasant, whatever time of year you book.
You’ll be glad to know that we regularly update our bar menu with carefully selected wine of the seasons which I must recommend next time you are here.
Hopefully we’ll see you again in the not too distant future.

Just back from a 4 night midweek inclusive stay. Apart from being given a room with a constant buzzing noise (the reception staff assured us that the fan above the room would be switched off at 9 pm)(not very good when you want to have a nap in the afternoon) but when we persevered with declinining it anther room was offered. This was sorted very quickly by the manager who was very understanding to our needs.
The food was good, 4 free drinks per person daily, the hotel was clean and tidy, the entertainment was good, (Steve Conroy brilliant), We stopped till the end every night which we don't normally do.
The staff were all good, especially the young waiter. All in all we will go back as we enjoyed it so much. We never got round to using the pool etc but from what we saw it looked alright.

We have just had a four night stay here with Shearings on a self drive holiday. The hotel is in need of some refurbishment but the rooms are clean and comfortable. The hotel itself is located some 8 miles south of Durham and there is not much to do in the surrounding area. There is a very good bus service into Durham operating from a bus stop across the road from the hotel.
Food served at the hotel was varied and plentiful and served by welcoming staff. The staff throughout the hotel give a warm and cheerful welcome with Phil the maintenance man being a font of historic and local knowledge.
The evening entertainment was very good.
The indoor pool was used by my good lady and she was pleased with the facility.
I have been fortunate enough to stay at several Bay hotels and some are better than others, this one falls short of being one of my favourites and I feel I have seen most of what the area has to offer in this one four night stay so wouldn't be in a hurry to return. Having said that I'm pleased I went.

It’s very pleasing to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and in particular your comments regarding our food. Our varied menu is going down a storm with all our guests, both old and new and we’re looking forward to building on this.
Phil will be pleased to read your comments, I think he missed his vocation as Newcastle university's professor of History!

We look forward to welcoming you back when you return, hopefully in the near future.

Just had a four day break at this lovely hotel, great value for the money paid, service with a smile from all staff, especially our breakfast waiter, Brett. Food excellent. good honest plain fare, nothing to complain about.

Room (35) was a wee bit dated, but very large, always clean and comfortable.

Entertainment every night, some better than others, Steve Conroy very funny.

Would certainly return.

Only one mild complaint, I do not drink alcohol, why no Kaliber alcohol free lager on the Bay inclusive drinks menu???

?

Room Tip: Room 35 is large and comfortable.

It is great to hear your views on our hotel and we welcome your kind comments.

I will be passing your comments onto the staff at The Eden Arms and also Steve Conroy who will be particularly pleased with the feedback. He always puts on a fantastic show on Tuesday evenings and all are welcome to join in the fun, non residents included.
Brett will be pleased he has another mention! The whole team work together to provide you with some great holiday memories.

Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

My wife and myself stopped on a Friday to Monday package last weekend. Bed and breakfast with evening meal. Free drinks vouchers for use on Saturday night. There were 6 of us in total.
To answer some of the negative points raised by others.
The location is near a busy road junction, but the double glazing and heavy curtains suppressed nearly all unwanted sound. There is a bus stop outside so those without cars can still get about.
The room we had was very clean and comfortable. The bedroom decorations are a bit tired in places, but as a budget room, very good value.
We found that the food choices each day were limited, but were good. The yorkshire puddings were home made and a must have.. The serving staff we very friendly and went the extra mile to accommodate requests.
There was entertainment each evening, Not top billings, but they provided the basis for a good evening.
The leisure area had a nice pool, jacuzzi and sauna. It also had a good selection of gym equipment. But the steam room constantly needed attention from the staff. But this was all free so it was a bonus to us.
Overall, for the price paid, it was well above average and hence provided a great value break.
