Owner description: Zoo Miami (also known as The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens) is the largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida, and the only sub-tropical zoo in the continental United States. The unique climate in South Florida allows us to keep a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia and Africa, representing a broad mix of species that is unlike any other zoo in the country. Zoo Miami today occupies almost 750 acres, and is home to more than 3,000 animals representing over 500 different species. Of this population, more than 40 species are classified as endangered. The zoo also houses more than 1,000 species of trees, palms and other plants, and over 100 special exhibits showcasing a broad number of species and scientific topics. We are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) which means we have passed a rigorous application and inspection process and meet or exceed the AZA's standards for animal health and welfare, fundraising, zoo staffing, and involvement in global conservation efforts. Zoo Miami is proud to be an active leader in many global wildlife and environmental conservation initiatives, and we are currently involved in over 36 projects taking place on six continents.

This was a great place for families to visit. We set off with a 2 year old in a stroller and enjoyed a leisurely walk through the zoo. She recognized many of the animals she saw and enjoyed the day. This wasn't a zoo with animals in cages. Even though the spaces were pretty big, we saw many of the animals, like the sun bear (who was sleeping up in a tree). They weren't hiding out of sight.

I think the favorite was the splash pads! Once she figured out what was happening, she was dancing and enjoying all the water coming out. We also had a nice lunch at one of the cafes in the zoo. There were family size pedal vehicles to rent, and much to do for everyone. I would definitely visit again if I was in the area.

We planned a day at the zoo and although most of the zoo seemed clean and organized, we were very disappointed that on a Tuesday so many things were 'closed'. (From animal buildings/shows to concessions). Many of the animals were gone from cages for various reasons with signs posted. Many habitats were "under construction." Some of the animals we saw just didn't look well cared for, and left us feeling very sad and overall unhappy about their situation. Many of the animals were by themselves and we felt it was a sad, solitary life for them. This was a very large park, and it did take us a complete 4 1/2 hours to walk the complete park. Some areas were beautiful and better cared for than others. For the cost of the entry fee, we felt we still got our money's worth for our day, but would like to see some improvements.

I hold a season pass to the zoo. If you go twice, it will pay for itself. I visit at least once every couple of months. The prices for food and drink are very reasonable. They have great events and I truly love seeing all the animals.

I remember all too well the original Metro Zoo. This is OK, but I was shocked at how few animals they actually have.
Th zoo is large and sprawling, be prepared to walk. Food and drinks are very expensive, $2.50 for a bottle of water. There is an additional charge for the monorail, tram, rides, etc. No special package deal.
Long ago, they had dozens of monkeys in colonies, three tigers, lion prides, red wolves, etc. Now it is one or maybe two of a species, with the exception of some of the hoof stock. Almost no reptiles or amphibians.
Although the zoo here in Jacksonville, FL doesn't have as large of exhibits, their diversity of species FAR outreaches Zoo Miami.
I was king of disappointed...

They have enough space here to give each display lots of room. Most displays are outdoor only. Many animals are not commonly found in other zoos. The downside to the space is that walking the zoo will tire many people and little children. They do have a monorail with four stops and they have an available tram tour. The other transportation choice many family groups seemed to favor was four wheel bicycle rental. We purchased a monorail pass and never used it.

The Zoo opened at 9:30 and most of the transportation, the aviary, etc. didn't open until 10:00. So, we basically just started walking and enjoying, and we never did find ourselves at a point where we needed or wanted the monorail. If you get on the monorail to move one or two stations, you are going to miss getting a close-up view of many exhibits that lie in between stations. You can always buy monorail passes at any of the stations, so I would advise holding off to see if you will be needing or wanting this transportation.

The food service was very limited, but reasonable in price and adequate for the need.

They are continuing to expand and renovate; currently working on a new main entrance.

There is quite a bit of shade available and they have lots of thoughtful areas where you can cool off with misters. Children can play in small water feature areas.

Zoo Miami is worth a visit.
