Owner description: Built in 1916 as a winter retreat, this lavish villa is a tribute to the Italian Renaissance. The museum contains much of the original furnishings and artwork, and is surrounded by lush, formal gardens.

Finally got to see Vizcaya after many annual visits to South Florida. Reasonably priced (only $12 for seniors!) Beautiful mansion, interesting history. Hard to believe this was just a "winter home." I love history and architecture, and enjoyed seeing how the rich wintered in Florida 100 years ago. We chose to take the Tri-Rail from Palm Beach County to the Vizcaya metro stop - about a 2 1/2 hour trip, an adventure in itself. It was a bit of a walk from the metro stop, however. We had lunch in the mansion's restaurant - a cafeteria line, but the food was quite good. The gardens are pretty, but the mansion is the main attraction, and well worth the trip.

Another of Miami's wonderful spaces - lush gardens laid out in formal arrangements, and a beautiful old mansion to wander around - Florida's quieter, less brash, answer to San Simeon. Attentive and helpful staff, a place where you take your time and appreciate what money in a bygone age could get you. The excentricity (and sexual orientation!) of a the original owner is evident. A glorious afternoon spent there in the company of friends is still fresh in the memory. Highly recommended, even if the gift shop is vastly over-priced.

home and gardens are a gem not far from center of miami. easily accessed by car and about 1 km from metro stop. gardens are delightful. the home has a fascinating history. docents very helpful. one must go on a guided tour for the upper level, worth the price. nice cafe for sandwiches and snacks. orchid garden beautiful. clearly worth a diversion for a few hours of pleasure.

This is a beautiful palace with formal gardens, architecture, artwork and a history . A trip back into time with the opulence of the era. The exhibits and rooms are all well marked and explained. Built with the John Deere tractor fortune you get a glimpse of the creativity and enormous wealth of the Deering's. His brother also built a beautiful although smaller estate in nearby Perrine Florida. Both brothers were important in helping create the economy and culture of south Florida. This is a must see. They also have a nice gift shop and restaurant on the property.

I had seen pictures of Vizcaya in every review of Miami attractions but never visited it. Really glad that we chose to see it during trip for a soccer match. I thought it might be a 1-2 hour visit. We ended up spending three hours which included lunch. We opted for the house tour and learned so much from it. It was fun to see how the other half lived in the early 1900s.
