“Don't Forget Freedom Tower”

The Ellis Island of the South. Where Cuban immigrants were processed and fed is now an art museum. There is much history in this place and MDC now uses it's location to promote local artists. However, the echoes of hope and need impregnates the walls. Shame it;s not a historical museum. Celia Cruz' wake and funeral hosted thousands of music lovers and celebrities from across the world.

“Contrasting structure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2013

The beautiful building is located from a short walk distance from Bayside Marketplace and the American Airlines Arena, and a short drive from the Port of Miami.
Considered by many as the Ellis Island of the South, the Freedom Tower is one of Miami’s most beloved and famous historic sites. It was once the home of the Miami News then became the processing, documenting and assistance Center for Cuban refugees fleeing Castro’s communist regime in the early 1960’s. After the major emigration ended in 1972, the building was sold to private entrepreneurs and changed owners several times. It remained in private ownership until 2005, when a group of developers deeded the property to Miami Dade College after preservationists opposed the development of a high rise condominium on the historic site. Today it is used as a cultural and educational center featuring interesting exhibits and events.

The Freedom Tower has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1979 and a U.S. National Historic Landmark since 2008. Cuban salsa legend Celia Cruz funeral was held at the Freedom Tower with an unprecedented attendance.

“A Beautiful Transformation into a Miami Landmark”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2013

A Miami landmark,I have watched the tower change from an eyesore to a beautiful building in the last 25 years. Before the Arena was built across the street, the tower resembled a scary building from a horror movie with thousands of birds flying in and out of its top floors. It has now been refurbished to stand tall among MIAMI'S skyline, lit up with beautiful colors every night. It is truly a sight to see.

“Miami Landmark.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

Beautiful recreation of La Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain that was built to house The Miami News back in 1925.The paper is long gone but the Freedom Tower was used during the 60's to process Cuban refugees from Castro's Cuba.It is now known as the Freedom Tower for this last role and it remains a very sentimental and symbolic place place for the large Cuban American population of Miami. It is both a very beautiful and full of history landmark of Miami.Don't fail to visit it!
