I booked the Pelican because of the style and individuality of the rooms. We arrived from only to find that we had been moved next door to the Casa Grande Suites, an 'upgrade' according to the Pelican. They even had their own "Pelican key' so it's clearly a regular occurrence. The suite was very big but totally soulless and definitely not what I booked.

To be fair to the Pelican, the staff were very polite and the next day they did move us into the main hotel to the room we had booked - and it was a huge, fantastic room - the 'Fifties Executive' although right over the front terrace so noisy into the night. That isn't a complaint just an observation.

Breakfast wasn't served till 8am so if you're an early riser you'll have to go next door to the 24hr News Cafe for your early morning fix of coffee - but it's only steps away. 'Continental' breakfast is included according to Expedia - but it didn't include any of the things I think of as 'Continental' - juice, yoghurt, cereal, pastries .... It DOES include everything I think of as 'American' - eggs, bacon, hash browns, pancakes etc - again not a complaint - more of a warning if you're watching your waistline.

Dinner in the restaurant was very good and felt a lot more civilised than many of the other restaurants along that stretch of Ocean Drive.

Happy Hour included 2 free drinks each night - just a shame we arrived too late the first night.

This next bit doesn't refer specifically to the Pelican ......DON"T be tempted by the goldfish bowl cocktails available everywhere along Ocean Drive - we did on the first night and didn't ask the price - $40 a drink!! - way too big and not convinced there was that much alcohol in it. Ask for a regular sized (and regular priced - around $11-12) cocktail instead - buy 3 if you want to spend $40.

Room Tip: If you can't sleep with noise ask for a room away from the front when you book - even higher up...

Thank you for reviewing our hotel. Our goal was to exceed your expectations by upgrading you to our one bedroom fully furnished ocean front apartment located next to our hotel. This beautiful 950 Sq apartment has been completely renovated and features a full living rooms space and modern open kitchen and comes with all of the services extended at the Pelican Hotel.

Thank you for your kind feed back and on behalf of our team, we thank you for allowing us the opportunity to host you during your recent visit and hope to see you soon at the Pelican Hotel.

From the first call to the hotel to checkout, top shelf. Reasonably priced restaurant, valet, hotel, beach amenities. Top notch friendly/warm staff across the board. This place had the best shower I have ever experienced in nearly 50 years (sounds crazy but oh so true). We truly had such a great time and they were the reason. Will be back 100%. Dennis, you know who I am :).

Thanks so much for a great relaxing trip.

Room Tip: They are all good. Small but all you need. You are in South Beach in prime Deco location.

If you like fun and funky and want to stay in South Beach, you'll struggle to get a better hotel than the Pelican. The staff are great, it's in the heart of Ocean Drive and the rooms are all pretty cool (both in temperature and style).

We stayed in Power Flower which was remarkably quiet given all the craziness going on outside. But the soundproofing between rooms was very poor, the ceiling fan is louder than a helicopter and the only view is of the next door building a few feet away.

On the whole though would recommend if bland, personality-free chain hotels aren't your thing.

One tip if you're going any time soon, ask for a room on the right hand side of the hotel as the building on the left is being renovated so there is some construction noise from about 7.30/8am.

This was my fifth time staying at the Pelican Hotel on Ocean Drive. Hotel is clean, check in was a breeze, friendly staff, great food on the terrace, the beach is across the road. Night life is all around, Mangoes is like 2 min walk, Collins Ave is one street over for great shopping.
you don't need a pool, the largest pool is across the road and the hotel provides the towels. Great service!

Room Tip: Corner Rooms are larger.

Rather than give a review I will simply put what we asked and what was given.

1) We asked for an early check-in and they said no.
2) We asked for a late check out and they said no.
3) We asked if we could get refunded the money we paid (55$ USD) for a beach chair from the company that is supposed to provide us complimentary beach chairs as advertised at the hotel but they charged us anyways, and they said no. But they did say that the next day our chairs were free (the day we were leaving!)
4) We asked if there was anyway to get a room to clean up in the day we left so that we could use the free beach chairs (otherwise known as a courtesy suite by hotels).....and they said.....wait for it.....no!
5) We did get to have one of their complimentary drinks and enjoyed watching their wait staff fight it out in the restaurant!

After we left, the taxi cab driver who picked us up told us how South Beach is now a huge tourist trap and that they are losing money because they are not getting as many fares to the area. He blamed it on how the hotels and restaurants don't care anymore about good service because they will always have some other sucker who will come visit and fill their restaurant and hotel. I couldn't agree more.

Why 2 stars and not 1? I guess the beds were kind of nice.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

Dear OttawaSenator,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. Our check out time is 12 noon due to your travel dates falling under the Internaitonal Boatshow I'm confident you understand that rooms were not available for you to check in prior to our 3 PM check in time. The Pelican Hotel is comprised of 29 guest rooms, regrettably we did not have extra rooms for which to have been able to extend early/late check outs in season.

Offered to our guests are beach chairs and fresh beach towels daily, bottled water, Wifi , full hot breakfast and cocktails during our happy hour all without a resort fee. When you chose your loungers on the beach, you went to the public side and luxury loungers. The beach operator is an independent company. For this reason, I explained to you at the desk that we were unable to refund you for funds that we did not collect.

Thank you again for your business and the opportunity to serve you,

Lupe Castillo
