5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

Just recently my Husband and I stayed at this beautiful and spacious Hotel, All of the staff was excellent . And the Hotel is right on the beach. We decided to rent the Eletric bikes at the Hotel ...Ray who rented us the Bikes was fantastic , very knowledgable of the area and Best sites to see, he took the time to map out the best route and it was very reasonable. We will definitely recommend this Hotel and the Electric Bikes....Thanks for the Memoires !!! John and Diane

Room Tip: We stayed in a Bay view room on the 15th Floor and had a bay and ocean view with a private balcony .

My husband and myself, along with our three boys (ranging in age from 17-6) had been in Miami for a family reunion. Once it was over, we decided to get a nice hotel closer to the beach to be sure our boys had the full " Miami Beach" experience. Usually, when we travel with the kids, we tend to stay at the "family friendly" hotels that have the free breakfast buffets etc. we thought this time, we'd do it a little different. It was not a disappointment. The room we got was a 2 bedroom with ocean view. It was beautiful. Light, airy, nicely appointed. The boys had 2 Queen beds with a side balcony, which had a partial ocean view, 42" flat screen tv, along with a full bathroom. The common area was a nice size, with another flat screen, with a wet bar, very small fridge. The entire length of the wall were windows, which added to the openness of the room. The only downside of the room was there was no door for our room. There was a nice full size bathroom ( which had a door of course ) then our room with a beautiful king size bed, another tv and a balcony with a view to die for. We have taken several cruises and had balconies and this view was just a. Glorious. Perfect way to wake up everyday. As I said, it would have been nice to have a door just to have a little more privacy, other than that, I wouldn't change a thing.

The hotel itself was beautiful as well. The lobby was light, clean, refreshing. They had a small bar, which we didn't utilize. Nice little coffee shop as well as a gift shop. The restaurant in the back of the hotel was nice. We didn't eat there, but the prices were reasonable for burgers and chicken tenders. Again, since we had the kids, we would go out for meals.

I have read reviews that complained about the hotel being too far from the activities of South Beach. I personally appreciated that. We had taken the boys to South Beach a few days earlier. The beach was pretty but it was crowded, the smell of substance that's still illegal in some states was in the air, and of course, the topless women. I am no prude but again, we had the kids. So, having a nice, clean, private beach at the back of the hotel was very nice. The boys liked the idea of us having "our own beach". As for umbrellas, you rent them daily for $10 a day. The chairs were $10 a day as well. When I say per day, once you rent them, you have them until 6 pm. I think it would have been nice for the hotel to provide them to hotel guests. Maybe with our next visit, this will be the case.

As far as the expense of the hotel, the parking was $30 a day. There's only valet service and of course, they can be very busy; however, the staff is very friendly, it's 24 hour service and you can come and go as much as you like. When my husband and myself went back to South Beach, with one trip, we took a taxi, but that was $25 round trip. The next couple of times we went, we took our car and found parking a reasonable rate in one of the public lots. As for the room rate, we got a bit of a discount because we booked via Hotels.com. It was a bit extravagant for a family of 5, but I feel vacations are for making family memories and this will stick with the boys for some time. When we asked our kids how this rated as for family vacations, they rated it right up there with our trips to Disney World, so I would say it was worth every penny.

Room Tip: Splurge and get an ocean view

I booked a corner bay view suite which was absolutely ideal for my stay for the week with my two teenage daughters. They had their own room with en-suite (and a balcony) as did I and both were separated by a large and comfortable lounge area. The suite was always clean, it was very light and airy and the essential air con. worked perfectly.

The beach was superb and is literally a one minute walk from the rear of the hotel. The sand was clean and the sea was beautiful.

But. Here’s my gripes:

• There are no bars, shops, cafes or restaurants anywhere near this part of Collins Avenue where the hotel is located. That meant we were stuck with the hotel for the buffet breakfast each morning which, including taxes cost $84/day for the three of us (and apart from the fresh orange juice, I didn’t think the breakfast food was particularly good quality). Equally, we were a captive audience for lunch which was not particularly extensive in choice but still expensive.

• I was charged $50/day to hire three sun loungers and two sun umbrellas (a must) for the beach. I thought that was a rip off.

• The hotel charges $30/night to valet park the hire car on site (although I found a car park 5 minutes further down Collins Ave. which charged $20 for overnight parking).

• Given the hotel elevators are not activated by room key, access to the hotel floors is unrestricted. On more than one occasion, advertising leaflets, eg for pizza deliveries, were shoved under our suite door at night. I questioned this poor security with Reception Desk staff who did not seem bothered.

My final “gripe” was on the day of checking out (Sunday 29 June, 2014). I wanted to extend our suite until 4pm that day. ie, an additional four hours past the statutory midday checkout time. I was offered a smaller room to use which I accepted. But the hotel charged me an extra $120 for using that small room for those four extra hours. Given the $1000+ I had spent at the hotel that week, I thought the Manager should have been more flexible and less greedy.

To re-cap, the accommodation was fantastic and the beach wonderful. But, the location of this hotel is not great and be prepared to pay for absolutely everything when you stay here.

Dear Comet4B, thank you for your review. We appreciate it when our guests take the time to share both their good and not so good impressions from our property. While we are absolutely delighted to read of the exceptional satisfaction you had with our 2 bedroom bay front suite, we were sorry to read of your experiences in other areas of the hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience and dissatisfaction some of our service fees may have caused you. We would like to advise you that typically, other hotels that offer complimentary beach chairs & umbrella rentals, valet parking do this because in addition to their standard taxes, they charge a resort fee as well. At the Grand Beach Hotel, we do not charge a resort fee, because not all guests plan to use the beach chairs & umbrella rentals, valet parking, etc. thus they should not be automatically charged for it. We pride ourselves on giving our guests the freedom of choosing the services they would like to use, as opposed to enforcing fixed, daily fees. Furthermore, our overnight management team walks the floors regularly every night to ensure the safety and comfort of our guests. We are very sorry to learn that you were disappointed by our location. We believe to be located in a great spot, which provides direct beach access in a peaceful environment and which is at the same time in close proximity to the hustle and bustle of South Beach. We are thankful for your feedback and comments. It is our hope that you will consider us again next time you travel to the area.

We booked this hotel for 3 nights and were very impressed with the room, which was spacious clean and modern.

Great facilities within the room. The pool was a bit shaded for our liking due to the amount of trees. However, you can sit on the beach for $10 a day.

The hotel is just a ten minute taxi ride from South Beach, but there's not much within easy walking distance. Breakfast is pricey, but lunch was good value and you can eat by the pool!

Stayed at the hotel in April with husband and 2 boys - 14 & 19. Room were great size - having the sofa bed was an added bonus for us, boys both had their own bed, great location right on the beach. And wasn't too far from ocean drive and Lincoln ave - loads of shops and restaurants in Lincoln ave.
We didn't lay by the pool as we loved going on beach but went to the pool bar before going back to room - lady bartender (can't remember her name) made wicked mojitos!!!
Would definitely stay here again!!!

Room Tip: Choose a room on higher floors

Stayed 3rd July 2014 for one night booked a penthouse suite ocean view on the internet, our daughter had the pick of any hotel for her birthday treat to Miami and we paid $711 this was very expensive but the stay was for her 18th birthday. Checking in was great and very smooth.
Room 2005 is disgusting we walked into the room and we were met with some very large red carpet stains on a once cream carpet, the stains get worst the more through the suite. The stains we found made the room feel like you were in somebody else's dirt. We called reception to complain somebody was sent to look and said yes there were aware of the stains and no action would be taken!!! Why was it ok for us or anybody else to stay in this suite without the carpets being cleaned?
Our ocean panoramic view that we paid for was not panoramic. It was a split view looking over the hotel next door if you looked to your right you could see the ocean and if you looked to your left could see the bay. We called reception again expressing our disappointment the lady was very confrontational and told me no penthouse rooms have panoramic Ocean views so why still are you advertising these on your website?
We could not wait to leave this hotel and head back. We will not be returning and are very cross that we had prepaid for this room, view and stay as it was not luxury or enjoyable and ruined our stay in Miami.

Dear Stanandchels, thank you for trusting us as your accommodation for your daughter’s special day. We are very sorry to read that we have failed to live up to your needs and have let you down during your one-night stay onsite. While we are empathetic to your frustration caused by your first impression of the room carpeting, we would like to take the time and assure you that all suites onsite are cleaned, shampooed, and treated regularly. Our housekeeping staff does take immense efforts to deliver an impeccable room outlook; however, they sometimes come across impossible to remove stains, such as the one you encountered. You can be 100% certain that the room you entered was clean and that what you witnessed were treated yet impossible to remove stains. We do take the time to replace the entire carpeting onsite once every year and on as needed basis. We will go ahead and notify the according department of your experience and comments, so we may take measures to eliminate this problem from the room. When it comes to the view from our Penthouse suites, they are indeed panoramic, even though our Penthouse suites are found on the side of the building and not oceanfront. Our property is higher than both buildings located on each side of the hotel, which gives guests of the hotel the opportunity to enjoy Partial Ocean and Partial Bay view from their Penthouse suite’s private balcony. We are sincerely sorry for the disappointing and unsatisfactory experience you had onsite. We would very much like for you to give us a second opportunity to show you our hospitality. Please feel free to contact us directly next time you plan your visit, so we may recommend the best suite for you.
