“Bit of a mixed review”
Reviewed 2 April 2010

I was down in South Beach for a conference, so on the whole I didn't really run into the issues that others have flagged about the cost of the umbrellas or the lack of sun loungers by the pool.

The housekeeping staff was beyond lovely and the front desk staff was very helpful as well. I didn't use the conceirege but she wasn't around all that often. I don't know whether it's the current economic climate, but they seemed massively understaffed. It took forever to get served at the bar, and things just seemed to take a little longer than they should have -- but I don't think it was that the staff wasn't trying.

I don't understand why at the price I paid, and the fact that I'm a platinum member i should have to pay for internet access in my room. If cheap motels can sort it out for free I cannot understand why Marriotts can't.

The hotel is definitely at the far end of the beach. But it was quite nice to get away from all the drunken college students.

I think if you're looking for a really luxurious place, you might be better off looking at some of the hotels at the northern end of the beach where places like the W are located.

Not enough sunbeds you have to be down at the pool by 6.30am!!!!!So the only alternative is the beach whch will cost you $65 for 4 beds and an umbrella!!The prices seem to have gone crazy breakfast over $100 it really is a rip off.So if you are coming to stay bring plenty of cash with you.

I am staying at the Marriott South Beach as I write this. Check in after a fabulous 5 night stay at the Eden Roc. They were sold out tonight so I moved hotels and wanted to stay in the Marriott family for the reward points. Not the best reasoning here on South Beach.
The entrance and lobby are very basic and almost kind of like a "hole in the wall" feel" when you first arrive. It's not terrible, just not worth over $150 a night.

While the room is fine and basic, the pillows are not great and linens are just okay. It smells like puke in the room too. I paid $400+ to stay here and frankly it is like $250 too much. I wish I would have just spent $200 more and stayed at the Ritz Carlton or the Lowes in a basic room and had great food and amenities. I could just kick myself for NOT staying at Ritz Carlton, my first choice for my last night in South Beach.

This feels like a cheap motel on the beach. Nothing fancy or special at all. It was nice to have a short walk to Joe's Stone Crab, but that is about it. It is quieter down here, yes, but it also does not feel like I am on vacation - maybe a cheap one.

Seriously, before you book here, make sure you cannot afford a nicer place. It is only 3 stars here and not worth the money. Renaissance Eden Roc is FAR superior. I loved my room at the Eden Roc and all of the grounds and pools. Excellent property that Eden Roc is! I miss it so much. I feel like I got ripped off by Marriott on this South of Fifth motel.

Well, it was my choice to save a little bit and I got what I paid for on South Beach standards. You really do need to spend more here to have a quality experience if you are an experienced traveler who appreciates quality surroundings. It is a very basic hotel with no charm.

Just thought I'd share, in case someone else out there is debating on where to stay in South Beach. Don't bother with collecting reward points...stay where their is luxury. Go for the Ritz and just believe you deserve it. You might be sorry if you stay here. However, if you are used to staying at dumps, you will be very happy here.

Stayed with my very dear friend for a relaxing vacation. Loved the location to the beach, food and shopping. Roll out of bed and go to the beach for the day. There is food and drink service right on the beach. The only complaint I have is that fee for the chairs on the beach. If you're a Marriot Member and or owner it should be a perk-just saying that's all.
Otherwise, this was incredible.

be sure to eat at Joe's Crab House. Expensive, but so worth every bite!

This hotel is very clean and is located right on the beach. The hotel staff is very helpful accommodating. The hotel restaurant, Deco Blue has good food and drinks, with seating inside or outside. This is an overall great hotel and I will stay there again next time i'm in Miami Beach.

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of a longer Florida trip. Things got off to a bit of a rough start when the front desk challenged whether we actually qualified for our negotiated rate. In the end, it was no problem, but odd given my history with the Marriott chain. The rest of the staff were very friendly throughout the stay.
The rooms are indeed small, you don't want to be doing anything other than sleeping in them. Most do have an ocean view though because of the hotel design so that is nice. Rooms are well-appointed, with a nice balcony, although if you are on the south side of the hotel you are kind of in a wind tunnel because of the building next door.
Enjoyed the location, as mentioned, quiet area but still close to walk. Liked that we could walk right out to the beach...and the pool area was quite nice. Always find it funny when they try to ding you by renting you an umbrella on the beach for the day for $10 when you are paying $300/night for your room. Isn't that why I paid to stay at an 'upscale' hotel? I didn't really investigate too much but the Internet options at the hotel seemed pretty bad; better to hit the wifi at the Starbucks downstairs.
We walked up Ocean Drive with no problem and took the South Beach Local on Washington Ave. when we wanted to go up to Lincoln Rd. and that area. (25 cents to ride, buses every 12 minutes) For breakfast, Big Pinks a block away hit the spot.

In my opinion this Marriott is very nice but in sort of a no-frills way for a vacation area. Location is good if you want quiet--about 3/4 mile+ from all the noise. Rooms clean but rather small. Not a lot of room for hanging and storing clothes or toiletries. Beautiful ocean views.

Food average in the restaurant--basically only used it to get snacks. Easy to get cabs here. Staff mostly nice. I wouldn't choose this if my plan was to lay out in the sun and be pampered as it definitely is not a resort. They do have a surprisingly good massage staff (Rosemarie--excellent for deep tissue) but their spa services are very limited and not what is advertised on promotional material. This is a good home base for shopping, going out to eat and hanging out in South Beach without the noise.
