We stayed at the Clay for two nights on the beginning of our trip and one night at the end.

The first stay was pleasant, we got a room in the separate Clay Villas building in Espanola way. There were restaurants and bars on the street outside partying loudly all night, but it ways ok with the earplugs we brought with us.
The last night however was almost unbearable (noise-wise). Not even the earplugs helped, and loud music and raucous people from the restaurant downstairs were keeping us awake until 3 am...

The rooms were nothing special, beds and floors were quite worn. rooms with shared bathroom (shared only between two adjacent rooms) will probably do for most travelers and are way cheaper than those with private bath.

Staff tend to be a bit bothered during check-in and check-out (especially when you're expecting the typical over-kindness in most US hotels, but were still helpful.
The nearby restaurant Oh Mexico has great breakfast at very low prices.

The location is however great - right in artsy Espanola way, just a few blocks to Ocean drive and the beach.

The Clay can be recommended if no other place at a comparable price is available, but only if you want to pay for a room that you dont wish to actually sleep in, but just store your luggage and party yourself. Not recommended for pre-departure nights and people who actually want to get some sleep while staying at a hotel.

The hotel is situated in the middle of all the happenings, with the beach literally 2 blocks away, and Lincoln Ave (which is home to many fine but affordable restaurants) probably 5 blocks away. I couldn't ask for more in terms of the location.
Also, the hotel is in the art deco district, and right in the middle of Espanola Way, which is a little Spanish villa type street. It feels absolutely great walking out every morning and night.
To be honest, the room isn't the greatest, but there is a clean bed and a working toilet and bathtub. My toilet was clogged and I needed to ask twice for them to fix it. This was the only complaint I have.
Given the price, I think everything is rather reasonable.

I paid USD75 for a single room in April 08 which was ok for that time and the area. Def good for party-people and less for relax-and-stay-in guests;

Room:
basic equipment (TV, AC), clean-ish; check out a few rooms;

Staff:
not very interested in guests or their wishes - which is ok as long as you get a decent rate;

Location:
you can conveniently walk to the beach (3blocks), shopping, nightlife.

Even the hotel has a nice exterior view and a good good location, seems the staff would like clients to just go, don´t come here attitute; the hotel smells bad; no elavators at all so you must carry your bags up the stairs; all this for a big price, TERRIBLE. Beleive me, the bill for 2 nights I spent was lots more than the bill for other 5 nights in the same NAME HOSTAL just in the back part of the HOTEL. Joke...NO!,

The room 312 smelled like sewage. We switched to room 314, it still smelled like sewage. Front Desk said - sorry, nothing else is available and no refunds!
This is promoted as a `Family Room' - we had our young daughter with us. It was dirty, outdated, and the window was screwed shut. Best of all, at 11pm we discovered there is a disco directly under our room and the music was so loud it was unbearable. This lasted until at least 3am. Imagine with a small child and all you hear is BOOM BOOM BOOM. Do not make the same mistake. Unless you are a backpacker and stay in the Hostel section, then AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS (we paid 190 dollars total per night for this nighmare!!!!)

This place would be worth the stay if the price were 1/3 what they're asking. It is a one star, or half star, hotel selling room nights as if they were a three or four star hotel. There are NO elevators! And, the staircase that I had to take to get to my room had a HUGE pile of smelly restaurant food boxes at the base -- where you begin the climb. There were flies swarming about and cats picking through the boxes. There was not one thing charming about this experience. At all. The room was extremely (!!!) basic and depressing. I checked out of that place and went to a hotel just off Ocean Drive that was MUCH (!!!) nicer and payed LESS than they were asking at the Clay.

After reading not so positive reviews on this 'hotel' i decided to give it a try anyway and book 4! nights at the Clay. The main reason being that it is one of the cheaper 'hotels' in South Beach. It was quite busy at check in, but that can happen. I had to walk all the way down Espanola Way to the gate which gave access to the block of rooms where I could find my room: nr.514. When I opened the door, I could immediately smell that people had been smoking in that room, there was even an ashtray, while it is a non smoking hotel. I reported this back to reception and wanted to have an other room, cause I didn't like the smell at all. They said that all was fully booked and may be I was able to get an other room the next day. They didn't seem much interested that people smoked in their rooms. The cleaners even left the ashtray and didn't put it away. I wasn't bothered in trying to get an other room, so I just dealt with the smell. But in the evening I found out that my room (remember nr. 514) is above a small cinema where they played the same movie for a couple of days with lots of gun shooting, which seemed real life in my room, not nice at all.
The light in the bathroom didn't work and it wasn't fixed.
Overall: I would not recommend this to any, except if you are partying all night and sleep during the day. At least it is quiet then.
